I'm a huge fan of usb-c charging, I have a charger everywhere and don't have to carry one with me plus I can connect the cable on both sides of the machine.
That said, Magsafe is soooo welcome! I really bemoaned it being gone, it's saved my machine a number of times. And just look at all the ports! /o\ Glad someone at Apple came to their senses.

You can still charge via any of the usb c sockets if you have the cable, the brick they give is still a usb c socket as well

Thank God MagSafe is only needed for quick charging. I really like my setup where I can connect 1 Thunderbolt cable for power, external monitor, backup disk and USB hub. And it's the only situation where MagSafe wouldn't be of much use, as the setup (with its cable routing) presents no danger of anyone tripping over a cable.

The new Pros have a 3.5mm audio jack with improved support for high-impedance headphones. Perfect for my 250Ω Beyerdynamics…

I was scared I would have to go back to the days of one bespoke charger for eac item in the house. Great to be given the choice. I wonder what went wrong with the MacBook PRO line... I think Sir Ive only read the "Everything should be made as simple as possible" part of the famous quote, and skipped "but no simpler" Thank fuck they sacked him after the butterfly fiasco.

I'd be all over this if the spec I wanted didn't pop out at £3,699. I mean... I'd be scared to carry the thing around in my bag at that point. I was already a bit leery at carting about the last one from 2018 or whenever, at £2,499. Christ alive.

I just cancelled my first order (due for delivery next week) and forked out for more RAM and GPU, which pushed delivery back to mid-November. It's a lot of money, but what price can you put on physical function keys?

I’m holding out til the new year I reckon, I want to see what the benchmarks are for the pro vs max anyway before deciding. I can get 570 quid back for my current one, hopefully that won’t drop too much over the next few months

Apple did everything I told them to. Even making the magsafe cable detach from the power brick.
Where is my check Rodger Apple?

I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro that in theory still works okay, it does most of what I want but part of the track pad is dead (bottom left corner), the coating on the screen has mostly disappeared and the battery is empty. The new MacBook Pros look great, I am so tempted but the price is a lot higher than I paid for this one 7 years ago. The temptation is high!

I ordered myself a 32GB M1 Pro (with all the cores). If Geekbench is to be believed that should be roughly as fast as my 12-core (24-thread) Mac Pro Xeon for CPU-bound tasks (which is what I'm doing all day — compiling code essentially).
I don't quite get the upset about the notch; it's just bonus menu-bar space "on top" of the normal display. (But I guess that depends a bit on whether the backlight LEDs are exactly aligned with the notch-line and make it look proper black in fullscreen.)

Is the notch on both new models or just the 14”? Somehow can’t definitively tell from the pics and write ups I’ve perused.

I think the upset at the notch is that it eats into full screen and it feels like it doesn’t need to be there. If it hasn’t got all the faceid bumf in it, for a company famous for its design ethos, it doesn’t feel like they tried very hard to avoid it.

Be a bit shit if they made the notch smaller this gen for the webcam, then had to go bigger to fit Face ID once the tech is ready to fit

I don’t really see the point of faceID if you’ve got a fingerprint scanner right there on the keyboard.

With macOS Monterey you can choose to show the menu bar in full-screen apps as well, which I'd wager a lot of people will enable. Also, apps can design around the notch, so menu bar entries can flow around the notch.
So in a way, with the new MBPs, full-screen apps gain the menu bar without losing screen real estate. The area below menu bar/notch has an aspect ratio of 16:10, like the old models.

With the notch on the new MacBooks, I don't understand what happens when the program menu items (in the MacOS top toolbar) reach the middle, where the notch is.
Photoshop, for example, has 12 menu items, which reach the middle of the top toolbar on my 15" MacBook Pro.
... will the last menu item be obscured by the notch?

Considering there’s no actual screen behind the notch, I would say no, and it’ll probably just be on the right side of the bar

Yeah - the toolbars on apps use system frameworks, so those frameworks will just be made notch-aware and menus will flow around them.
Any app not using the framework won't be able to go full-screen.
The same thing happened when they added the notch to iPhones. Apps using system level frameworks "just worked" and everyone else had to do some work to be allowed to go full screen.
