The TV UI seems to be in transition at the moment. I guess they didn’t want to change it all in one go but it’s definitely neither one thing nor the other at the moment. Might be ok once they fully see it through.

I hope so. Seems like they definitely had some stakeholder disagreement when it came to removing the TV Show and Movie apps.

Good UI improvements? There's no accounting for taste Well I prefer the side panel to the weird separate Apple TV+ 'app' that wasn't an app. But most of all I like the long press on the home button that brings up the little miniplayer at the top which lets me change key settings quickly without diving into the settings menu.

I have an iPhone question. My wife has an iPhone 12. Recently my daughter started using a hand-me-down iPhone, so I duly set up the family thing, using my wife's Apple ID as she's under 13. Since then, my daughter's phone number appears to be the primary and I can't delete my wife's number from my daughter's phone. Which means she gets all my wife's calls.
If I look at the Apple ID details on my wife's phone, her number isn't associated with Facetime/iMessage and I can't seem to find a way to make that happen (claims an Apple device isn't associated with that number, when it clearly is). Help! I didn't have this issue with my son's account when he used an iPhone, so I've clearly fucked up somewhere.

I’m not entirely clear on what you’ve done, but my 12 year old has their own ID managed by me as the ‘organiser’ of the family.

Hmm. Maybe that's where I went wrong. I find it all way more confusing than Google but I guess that's because I don't use iOS at all.

If you go into the family bit of the iCloud bit in settings there’s an option to create a child’s account.

It’s far easier if you set up the girl with her own iCloud account managed under the family group otherwise you get bits of info all over the place.

I think I must have been pissed. I had created her an account but managed to sign in on her phone with my wife's account. So that's sorted. Although still can't associate my wife's number with iMessage etc.

What you’ve done here, Doug’s, is gone and fucked it up
Good luck un-fucking it. I’ve spent a year trying to work out how to fix my mum’s iPad. Learning one: Don’t give a landline number for 2fa Mum. It really fucks everything up.

Why don’t Apple do any TV shows in 4K? It’s really strange.

To be more clear I was referring to the non Apple TV+ content. The paid for stuff.

4k tv seems to have some exclusivity stuff going on. For the longest time not even HBO/Max had GoT in 4K, it was a Vudu exclusive.

It seems strange that there’d be exclusivity for everything. Seems more likely to be an Apple thing which is weird.

Oh yeah, that is odd. Haven't noticed that until now, though I don't have many purchased shows.

There’s also quite a lot of limitations on streaming TV shows in 4K from things like the IPlayer app, whereas if you use the same app in the TV OS it will have 4K on things like Planet Earth.
In fact, I might be wrong, but as far as I can tell only Movies and Apple+ content is 4K through Apple TV. No other apps or sources of content are.

Amazon Prime and Disney+ both show content in 4k, not 100% of it but a lot of it.

That’s true. It’s the non-subscription stuff that doesn’t seem to be, but is on other platforms (IPlayer, ITVX etc).

I'll see that frustration and raise you randomly being restricted to just subscription content and not being able to see your bought library depending on which platform the app is on.
And STILL not being able to watch iTunes extras if you are kindly granted access to the things you have actually bought.
Fucking streaming, honestly.

Yeah I saw something ages ago that iPlayer was going to be updated to include 4k but I don’t know where they are with that. No surprise ITVX can’t manage it as that app is shit.

Sky Q and my smart TV app. Its literally just a TV+ app. For a full list of complaints:
Sky Q: no personal library Panasonic TV app: no personal library Firestick: Can see library but can't actually buy anything PS5: closest to fully functional in that you can kind of buy things on it ALL: No iTunes extras
many shitty variations of a single app/service

Fair enough.
I know you can’t access the store on Google devices.

I guess there needs to be some reason to buy an AppleTV. If all the functionality was available on the free app you get with other devices it wouldn’t need to exist.

Yeah, I'm sure there is a spreadsheet somewhere saying they will make more money forcing me to buy an AppleTV than letting me just watch the Aliens Directors Cut on the playstation but just this relatively small level of friction does stop me buying as many things on the store as I would do if everything just worked.

I haven't been able to access Extras in any way for years, on any platform. But my old Philips TV and my current LG OLED both have functional apps where I can buy shit, and watch what I've bought. I do miss those Extras though.
