Yup, Macs don't have the necessary cooling, the hardware affordability, or the software support for gaming (yet).
You can get away with a bit of light gaming of course, but you should buy a Mac if you want usability that's second to none, a logical OS, and the convenience of the device lasting for years. Great speakers, screen, and a telepathic trackpad count for everything.
I'm 40, and I used Windows for work and gaming until about 6 years ago when I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro, and I'd never go back to a Windows machine now, particularly a Windows laptop. Happy to game on console and work on Mac.

Cooling?! Given that you can play last gen AAA games (both of them that were released on Mac) in absolute silence suggests that the ARM chips have solved that.
I’ll be intrigued to see how the M3 Max actually handles a RT workload mind you. My work machine is getting upgraded in a few months so I should find out.

They are getting there, my M1Pro can run Metro Exodus at 30fps, the problem is fuck all games actually have native ports for the M chips. And if they do, like RE:Village, it’s only the version on the apple store, not the Steam version. Steam on mac just sucks. Just getting a controller working is a hassle.

My point was that both the iMacs and MacBooks still heavily prioritise form factor over thermals, but you're right, the M chips are certainly a game changer in terms of efficiency. Work bought me an M2 MacBook Pro, and I've yet to hear the fan spin up and it barely ever gets hot... The complete opposite of the 2017 MacBook Pro they gave me previously.

I've got a feeling the entire laptop market is going to switch to ARM processors. Both AMD and Nvidia are said to be working on ARM chips for PCs and even servers. Launching somewhere in 2025 apparently. Worst case we'll get a half decent version of Windows ARM, and bootcamp becomes a thing again. I miss bootcamp.

Maybe they’ll start working on arm compatible graphics cards

There's always Apple Arcade. IIRC all games also run on Apple silicon Macs.

As someone who's worked in IT support (I'm a system/network engineer now) nothing is more logical than Linux and MacOS is just Ubuntu in fancy dress (inasmuch as early versions of iTunes ran natively on Linux distros). I wish there was a MBPro windows equivalent. With and RTX 4070ti equivalent GPU.

Set up a new phone this week. Usually I go for the direct transfer, but thought I'd opt for 'Restore from icloud': never again. iCloud has shit the bed, so I've got duplicate devices and tabs in triplicate.

That's a bummer. I always restore from iCloud, must have done it dozens of times without any issues, wonder what happened?

My daughter/her phone keeps turning whatsapp icloud backups back on and filling up the entire storage, killing regular phone backups for everyone. Her friends dont half send some shit to each other.

Not much help to you apple funboys, but I've taken to backing up and then deleting any WhatsApp media older than a year every once in a while. Went from 15GB daily WhatsApp backups that kept failing or just took ages to complete, to a couple of GB that backs up in moments.

Hah. That was something else I lost: never backup WhatsApp messages to iCloud, but again, it's always transferred device to device. Was miffed that I'd lost four years of messages.

I’ve finally done it. Chrome has molested my batteries for the last time and I’ve migrated every device over to safari.

Question for any TV 4K owners. You can have multiple accounts and switch between them, but can you have and switch between a UK and US account freely? I do this in the TV+ app, and it just changes the store region so that you can buy/rent from either. I’m curious if the TV box has restrictions on this, like all the mobile devices do.

Sitrep on the above: safari is so much gentler and kinder on your battery, it’s ridiculous. It’s probably in part due to the fact it blocks a lot of background crap and adverts but even so.

I love Safari.
It’s the browser I use most often, on both Mac and iPhone. I have started to run into a bit of a problem, though. It’s both annoying and important.
On a few completely unrelated retail websites, I have been unable to complete a purchase.
It’s usually right at the end, after entering all details, including discount codes and so on. I’ve had to then redo the whole thing in Chrome and, at least once, this has resulted in us losing a discount due to “code has already been used”.
I figure it’s something to do with ad/popup blocking. Anyone know more?

I’m selling my M1 Mac Mini (256GB storage; 16GB memory) and thought somebody here might want it at a slightly better price — say £450?

So 17.2.1 has broken my Mail app, anyone else? Sync to Exchange has gone to shit.

The trouble shooting tip for Mail is always: remove and re-add your account
I don't know how long its been since you updated but they removed basic auth some time last year which caused sync issues, so if you re-add it, it will force OAuth.

Le sigh. Not so straightforward when it's an office account and I'm trying to work remotely. I'll need to go in to get them to reauthorise it.

Does anyone else have a recent Apple TV? I have two and the latest update has pretty much fucked it. They’re trying to change the menu systems and it constantly locks up and needs resetting. The fact that the same thing has happened to two different devices suggests it’s pretty widespread unless I’m just very unlucky.

I've a 2021 2nd gen and a 2022 3rd gen 4K in use amongst the family and neither has had any of the issues you mention.
Other than the way they're trying to change the menu on the Apple TV+ app, I've been very happy with them. No real problems apart from mine (2nd gen) which very infrequently boots up with a lovely pink "filter" over the entire screen, but I think that could be my HDMI connection. A reboot sorts that out each time though.

Also the update in general is dreadful.

I've got two and both have been fine, the latest updates have made some good UI improvements. The only problem I have is sound, they're both paired to HomePod Minis and both connections are glitchy.

Good UI improvements? There's no accounting for taste I'm a fully invested fanboy, but Apple's latest UI overhauls of TV and Watch OS have been pretty naff; both (in my mind) have made things counterintuitive.

WatchOS is frustrating now: my muscle memory has not yet recognised which direction I need to swipe.
