The only thing I can see is that the 12 used Bluetooth 5 and the 14 pro is using 5.3
Also while comparing them both I also notice that the 14 pro is the perfect brightness at night when I'm bed so it doesn't blind me when I get up in the middle of night and check something.

Been using the new airpods, I hear less of the stuff I don't want to hear, and the stuff I do want to hear sounds better.

The power adaptor for my 2018 MacBook Pro decided to stop working today, which is odd as there doesn't seem to be any signs of wear or damage on the charging cable. But when I plug it into my phone (it always charged it before) it comes up with an odd "USB connection not supported" message. So I'm guessing it's buggered?
Any recommendations for cheap USB-C to USB-C cables that will sufficiently charge my MBP, or will I have to fork out for the official one? I'm hoping that's where the issue is anyway, and not with the actual power adaptor.

It can happen, I once got a brand-new MBP with a cable that didn't work out of the box. No visible signs of damage either.
You don't need to buy the official one, but it should be one that supports PD (Power Delivery), else charging would be very slow.
Do you have another USB-C cable (doesn't need to be PD) so you can see if it's the cable?

I don't have another USB-C to USB-C cable at the moment unfortunately, but it does just about work with my phone charger (albeit barely charges). So I might pop to down to the Apple store anyway to test it out with a different cable/charger. Probably better than to just order a random cable from Amazon (and tbf the official Apple cable is only £19 anyway).

Hello Fruit Heads.
Bit of a funny one, this, and my Bing searches are failing me.
MacBook running macOS 12.6, fully up-to-date in all ways, and I keep finding the System Preferences > Extensions window open when I either reboot the machine or unlock it after a period of inactivity.
Anyone know the cause, or why I'm being thick?
Cheers!

I think that’s a security thing, maybe one of your extensions is not apple approved. Check if in settings>security and privacy. Sometimes there’s an “allow” button, or you could try setting allow apps from app store and identified developers.

For the 2nd time since I've had the iphone 14 pro I've woken up to being an unresponsive black brick. The solution is to force restart it but the first time this had happened a few weeks ago I thought it was completely bricked.
It's a known issue given the threads on the internet so hopefully apple fix it. A shit way to wake up.

I think I want an Apple Watch now. I've done well resisting the urge for useless tech at crazy prices, but I'm quite intrigued by them all of a sudden. Anyone here got one and use it daily? Worth the price, or a bit shit really? So I've been wearing an Apple Watch S8 for over a week now and I really, really like it. For one, it's genuinely quite nice to be wearing a watch again but mostly it really has had the desired effect re: kicking me up the arse activity wise. I've set goals and stuck to them religiously for the past 7 days, and finally made use of the Fitness+ stuff on Apple TV. It's gimmicky, but it works for me! The sleep tracking is weird. It's really clever what it can detect but I'm not sure what I'm doing to do with the data and I'm not really keen on wearing a watch in bed tbh.

I dont sleep very well so it was useful to be able to see what affected my sleep (for better or worse) and how much I was getting in general. I always wear a watch in bed and this one was quite comfy, so that was fine but the battery life is so poor, if I wore it through the night it meant I couldnt wear it for a decent chunk of the day. Again, it was just an extra layer of admin I didnt want.
The other half uses it on her fitbit and the battery on that lasts forever, so I might bite the bullet and just get a lameo fitness band.

I've been charging at night instead. I've been wearing the watch with always on display ON (raise to wake OFF) and between 7am - 11pm I've not had anything less than 50% charge remaining. Quick charging seems to top it right up in 15 mins.

Mine was a early one. It, generously, had about 15hrs in it so for someone who wears their watch 24/7, it was never really going to work, especially if one of its key functions needed it to be used at night.

I turned the always on display off. It’s so good at coming in when I want to see the time that there was no benefit for the 10-20% extra battery usage a day.

Good job you’ve not been to Alton Towers yet, too. It keeps calling the police when people are on roller coasters because it thinks they are crashing their cars.
For two minutes, repeatedly and 100ft in the air. Doing loop de loops.

mcmonkeyplc - bah. Another problem is that I couldn’t be without a phone, with a house sale and essential banking apps. I’m sure Apple used to keep some stock back for fault returns, but I was told that isn’t the case anymore and you go in the queue with everyone else, which is 4-5 weeks for the 14 Pro.

Suggestions please. Time to replace my late 2014 iMac 5k. My wife works from home more than me, but occasionally we have to work from home at the same time. Her dual-monitor setup provided by her work dominates the home office space, which is only big enough to sit one of us. I could do with a laptop so that I don’t have to carry the iMac to a different part of the house on the occasions where we are both working from home. I’m no-where near as heavy-duty a user as I was before, so portability is definitely more of a priority over power. The screen real estate is useful for multi-tasking but that’s not critical. Even the photo editing I do is mostly on an iPad Pro with the iOS Lightroom app. I wouldn’t necessarily need an Apple computer for the every day office tasks and general media use, but I am well entrenched in the Apple ecosystem with subscriptions to Apple Music and iCloud, and I want the originals of my photograph library on a computer and Photos does (nearly) everything I want it to. Does this all point to the MacBook Air? Is the M1 version (say at 16GB) going to stand up for the next five years? I ended up ordering the Macbook Pro 14", 16GB and 1TB, thanks for the earlier input. It is double the price of the base M1 and probably too much power for what I need to use it for. However, my old iMac has 16GB and 1TB and I feel those specs are needed. Ramping up the Air to those specs is expensive too. I might as well go for the spec that should last the test of time better. I really like the midnight colour of the M2 Air but there is barely £100 difference between that and the Pro in the spec I wanted.

That's what I have (as my work laptop) - M1 Pro, 14" w/16GB and a 1TB SSD - and it is a monster. Fast as anything, great battery life, great screen. I don't think you'll be upset.

I encoded a video with Handbrake (H265) with both my work 16" MBP from 2019 with 8-core i9 beast, and my M2 Air. The MBP was faster… by 11%.

It's crazy how much better Siri works with a HomePod mini instead of devices listening to "Hey Siri". Without one, my devices would react to my GF's voice or vice versa, devices in another room would react but not the one directly in front, commands were not understood correctly etc. Also, spoken responses (mostly weather-related questions) were hard to understand.
Now it works perfectly. We use Siri so much, this convenience alone is worth the price.

Apple introduced a new low-end iPad today (that is 36% more expensive than the previous gen). It now comes with a USB-C port. But is only compatible with the 1st-gen Pencil. Which has a Lightning connector. Which means you'll need the new USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter:
