I received the M2 Air yesterday. Even if it's been only two days, it's already clear that it is by far the best Mac I have ever owned. - it is incredibly fast
- it's absolutely silent
- it barely gets warm
- the screen is gorgeous
- the keyboard is very quiet and somehow even better than on the old ones (not counting the butterfly keyboards)
- it wakes from sleep instantly
- the battery lasts forever (it arrived about 75% charged, I used it the entire day to set it up and then performed a wireless Time Machine backup and at the end of the day it was at 20%)
- Starlight is a great colour, it looks almost like silver, but with a warmer tone
- the new case design makes it much more pleasant to hold when carrying it around
- it feels noticeably lighter than the old Air, even though it's just 50g lighter (probably also because of the new case design)
If anyone's on the fence: buy it.

My first gen 12.9 iPad Pro went kaput. It was my own doing and fixing is just too much hassle.
I'm looking at the M1 12.9 with that XDR display. I do have a first gen iPad Air which is clunky to say the least. It's going to cost a few bob but I'm also looking at getting a Mac Studio. I went into the shop and they are a hell of a lot bigger than I expected. Got all the ports I'll need.
Sensible thing to do is wait till the October event to see what comes out. That XDR display will go very nicely with my M1 13" MBP, especially when using Final Cut and Resolve.

Someone won the lottery.
-------------------------
I think I want an Apple Watch now. I've done well resisting the urge for useless tech at crazy prices, but I'm quite intrigued by them all of a sudden. Anyone here got one and use it daily? Worth the price, or a bit shit really?

I got bored of mine after about a year, in the end I didn’t use any of the features other than Apple Pay and it’s not a particularly nice “watch” to just wear as a watch. The health monitoring stuff was a bit of a novelty, it kept crashing if I went running on the strava app, it once woke me up when I was feeling rough and needed a nap because my heart rate dropped too low which ruined my nap

Controlling the music from your wrist while driving was a nice thing though. I had mine on that fancy steel band so it was all black and looked like batmans watch, but still just not a nice watch if you’re into watches. Presumably if I dig it out of the drawer the battery will be too fucked to last a day anyway

Just like a brand new one, then.

Yeah, I don’t really wear mine anymore. I’m not a mad sports person, so every feature is a ‘nice to have’ rather than essential and I’m the kind of guy who never takes a watch off, so charging it all the time became annoying.

I found my Fitbit was far more practical as a sports/health tracker and vastly cheaper, so I wear that on my right wrist and a proper watch on my left, and my Apple Watch has long been resigned to a draw.

I have worn one every day since its release in 2015 for six years, until last summer when I realised that I only really use it to see what time it is, as I had disabled almost all notifications anyway. I then bought a nice mechanical watch and haven't worn the AW since.
When I used to do interval training it was super useful. I listened to music while running and the app I was using told me via voice through the headphones when anoter interval began.

Mine was also pre-always on so even looking at the time was annoying.

I reckon mine would get a rotation if you had to charge it every week or something but having like 15hrs battery life absolutely killed it, for me. Having to remember *another* charging cable everywhere you go is just an extra layer of life admin I cant be doing with.

I use mine a lot. Running two or three times a week (no Strava issues for me), tracking the weather when I wanna nip outside, I pretty much rely on it for any upcoming meetings and calendar stuff.
That’s probably about all, but that’s enough for me. I’m rocking the Series 4 still. My Series Zero bought way back at the original launch was parked after a few months for atrocious battery life. The Series 4 and up are/seem a lot better on that score.
So it’s up to you. If £400 is a lot for you right now I wouldn’t bother just on a whim.

I use mine a lot, mostly because it saves me from having to check my phone to see if it’s something I need to respond to. And I’m no super athlete so the fitness tracking is good enough for my needs.

Not a watch or an iPhone, but I have just bought Mrs dogbot an M2 MacBook Air for her birthday.
I had a proper time of it getting her to "choose" a colour without giving the game away.

I use my apple watch series 6 all the time for running and exercise. Find it pretty useful for when you leave your phone in another room and receiving notifications and calls.
The calls are always shit quality but it's only used on the occasion the phone is out of reach.

I was looking at the SE as well, but the always on display is something I'd definitely want - what with it being a watch. I wonder if those that stuck theirs in a drawer after the novelty wore off had one without the AOD?

Love my Apple Watch, but main benefit for me is probably being able to see what my blood sugar is by just looking at it (T1 diabetic).
I use the activity tracking stuff, and try and do the monthly challenges (failing this month though...). Gives me something to go for.
I use the "make your phone make a noise" thing a lot.
Good to check notifications to see if it's worth getting my phone out to check.
Even works not too badly as a torch in close quarters. The red light is great for not waking up my wife.
I'm going to be wearing a watch anyway, this is just a watch with benefits.

Do you have it paired in some way with a FreeStyle Libre or something else? Interested as my partner has a libre and has been thinking about getting a watch, it would be great if it just does it?
EDIT// Ok, no worries, Google was my friend... looks like it's Dexcom not Libre!

I have a Series 7 watch and use it every day. Gf has a 6 and it see the same use. My old 5 was given to my mum and she does the same, albeit for less functions.
I do charge mine daily (for about 30 minutes before bed to top it to max) but it’ll go about a day and half before it dies. All the fitness stuff is fine for me (walks, swims, gym activities), sleep tracking is useful. The main 2 additions that make it really useful are monitoring messages and the timer without having to reach for your phone. Doesn’t sound like much but they’re simple additions to it’s primary function that actually do make life that tiny bit easier in little ways.
I quite enjoy the form factor and tend to purchase new bands now and again to cycle, so it stays quite interesting visually too.

I think that’s only a must have if you’re an incessant time checker. I have a kingly sense of the passage of time so I really only look at it when I want to interact with it (it lights up for notifications and events, obvs).

If you're only using basic watch functions, you can get a Garmin 45 which does all those for <£100 and needs a charge every 7-10 days.

I was deeply sceptical about how much I'd care when I got mine. I now can't imagine not having it. If it broke I'd get a replacement same day.

Regarding AoD...I have a series 6 and have it turned off to save battery. Turns out I can wait the extra 0.5 seconds to see the time.

Long story short, my Mrs has had sn Iphone... 8? and a 12 over the past 4 years. In that time I've had multiple Samsungs and other 'lesser' branded Android phones, probably 5 in the same time frame. Having been on Android since the first Samssung Galaxy S- for my wallet's sake I think I'm going to make the jump to IOS.
Has anyone done this in the last couple of years? I like the freedom of Android, still use microSD's, but used to play roms on it, but now storage is decent and don't play games on it anymore so the reasons to stay on the platform is getting less and less. The Mrs is currently on iphone 12 and we only used that for holiday pictures this year and the pictrure quality is great.
Can get a 256GB 14 for 32 quid on Sky, hoping the deal is on in February as that's when my contract is up, but happy to pay about £30. Any reason not to go onto Apple?

Literally the most useful thing about everyone having an iphone is 'find my phone'. Add everyone as a family on your icloud account and you can answer 'where did I put my phone/ipad/airpods?' being asked every 30 seconds with a ping.

It’ll save my sanity.

Its almost magical. If my wife leaves a room for more than five seconds, she will say 'has anyone seen my phone?' when she re-enters it.
