BTW, I am a huge Apple nut, and the above is to be taken in jest.
A witticism, if you will.

Suggestions please.
Time to replace my late 2014 iMac 5k. My wife works from home more than me, but occasionally we have to work from home at the same time. Her dual-monitor setup provided by her work dominates the home office space, which is only big enough to sit one of us. I could do with a laptop so that I don’t have to carry the iMac to a different part of the house on the occasions where we are both working from home.
I’m no-where near as heavy-duty a user as I was before, so portability is definitely more of a priority over power. The screen real estate is useful for multi-tasking but that’s not critical. Even the photo editing I do is mostly on an iPad Pro with the iOS Lightroom app. I wouldn’t necessarily need an Apple computer for the every day office tasks and general media use, but I am well entrenched in the Apple ecosystem with subscriptions to Apple Music and iCloud, and I want the originals of my photograph library on a computer and Photos does (nearly) everything I want it to.
Does this all point to the MacBook Air? Is the M1 version (say at 16GB) going to stand up for the next five years?

Stretch the extra 250 quid for the new M2 imo, get a lot more for the money

I’d go for the M1 MacBook Pro - better screen, connectivity, processor and you could hook it up via Thunderbolt/ USB-C to a dual screen. The 14” is very portable and a lovely bit of kit.

Almost double the price of the M1 Air they’ve asked about though

M1 for sure. Remaining Intel support is on a ticking timer.
See if you can get a 16gb one though. Not sure why there’s no price on there - guess it’s because it’s a BTO option ordinarily?
The base 16/512 14” Pro is about 1500 before tax, so that might fly too and it’s got a very nice screen and a bit of a processor bump as well.
Edit: to be clear, and you probably know this, but don’t buy the 13” Pro by accident!!!

The base iMac m1 has only got 2 USB ports which would annoy the fuck out of me

Looking at the Apple site, I think all the 8-core GPU models get the extra USB ports and the Ethernet jack on the power supply so I think that’s all sorted.

Was replying to the first post comparing the base 8gb M1, missed the follow ups. I’d take a 16gb M1 over the i7

Yeah it would be a 8 core / 8 core, so will benefit from the extra ports (and I believe) the 2 fan setup.

Can you wait a few months longer? The M1 iMac is getting a bit old, it will probably be updated soon-ish. Apple will most likely hold an iPhone event in September and another event in October or early November.
And as others have said: no, don't get the Intel one, absolutely not, for 16GB of RAM and the not-base model with more ports.

I’ve been looking at getting a Studio but holding out a bit to see what happens in October. If they do a M2 Mac Mini that might suit my needs.

Bought a refurb M1 Mini (16GB, 1TB) a few months back and love it - couldn't hold out any longer as my old iMac was on it's knees, but wish there was a predictable 1-year cycle, like for phones, with Apple desktops.

And they don’t even connect to my PS5 which is the most Sony like move Sony pulled in recent times.

I know the expectation that their won’t be a iPhone 14 mini, but are Apple likely to end of life the 13 mini? I’ve been waiting to get one hoping on a price drop but having a last minute thought that they might just stop selling it immediately.

The 14 apparently sticks with the same processor as last year, so I’d hazard a guess at them leaving the mini in the lineup as is

That's interesting. I thought this year would be the year I finally upgrade my iPhone X to the latest model, but perhaps I'll drop down to the 2021 model if it saves a few quid. I could probably even go another year or two with the X if I can find somewhere to replace the battery.
Hmm...

I’ve been waiting to get one hoping on a price drop but having a last minute thought that they might just stop selling it immediately. They're still selling the 12 mini. So after Wednesday, they will continue selling the 13 mini. As right now they're still selling the 11 (which I'm pretty sure will be EOL'd this week), they might even continue selling the 12 mini.

Any authorised Apple Service Provider (or Apple themselves, if you live near an Apple Store) can replace that battery. I had my X's battery replaced a few times already. I'm holding out for the 14, mainly because of USB-C.

Its rumoured every year but the reason for getting the 14 isnt the chip, its that its due a total redesign. Its why Im hanging on for it. My 11 is shagged and Ive got an insurance claim against it, but that needs a wipe and two weeks away to be fixed. I dont have a spare phone (there is an iPhone 7 the wife has put 'somewhere safe' in the house) so its either get a cheap android or wait until the 14 is announced. If it isnt a redesign, yeah, Im probably going to get a second hand 13.

The 13 (especially the Pro) was already a phenomenal handset so it's hard to go wrong. I believe the rumour is that the 14 Pros are getting a new chip, but the non-Pros will be reusing the previous chips.
These things already have vastly more power than most of us will need anyways. We're so far into diminishing returns now hopefully they'll just continue sorting the battery life and efficiency.

Yeah, if my 11 wasnt dying, I wouldnt be considering upgrading unless the new design was a bobby dazzler. Theres honestly nothing I would change on this other than USB-C.
The girl has an iPhone XR and, honestly, that would be enough phone for me (other than maybe the camera).

We're so far into diminishing returns now hopefully they'll just continue sorting the battery life and efficiency. Yup, this is what kept me with the X for 5 years. That and the fact that it really hasn't shown any signs of slowing down until now. In fact, even now it's not like it's unusable, but I'm in that "it would be nice to have a new one now" space. Does anyone use the Pro Max versions? I'd be tempted by the bigger screen I think, especially as the X is already a fairly big thing anyway. I can't type with one hand on that comfortably so I'm a two handed user. I might as well go slightly bigger, right?
