The annoying thing is that its now the same price as an M1 MBA and its really hard to square that circle even though I dont really want a laptop. Yeah I keep thinking I don't want another laptop but for 90% of the time my iPad Pro is on the magic keyboard anyway! I don't do as much with the apple pencil as I thought I would, but it's still nice when I do.

I just use it to consume media, watching videos, using it as a reader and whatnot and for that its absolutely flawless. Switching to a laptop again would probably degrade that user experience. But.... its the same price...

The 13" MBP doesn't seem to be inline with any of the other new models; I'm not sure what the need to release it was. I'm guessing they had a shit ton of chassis with the touch bars lying around and binning them off wouldn't look good for their push for green credibility.

The 256GB 13" MBP is £100 more than the 256GB Air. The 512GB 13"MBP is the same price as the 512GB Air. This makes no sense. The 512GB Air appears to be £100 more than it logically should be. The 256GB MBP comes with an M2 with 10 GPU cores. The 256GB Air comes with an M2 chip with only 8 GPU cores. You can upgrade the Air to the 10 core GPU for, you guessed it, £100. The 512GB variants of both have the 10 core GPU.

Which one is that?
The Mrs needs a new Air, so I guess I'll be ordering one of them when it's available. £250 more than the old one, though. Because of course it is.
Typical that I've just got my first MBP in a few years and love it and they go and release a faster one.

You should never order when they have an upcoming conference and always use the macrumors buying guide

Only the former was updated.

ecosse I know. It was a new one from work though, so it's what they had in stock. Happily, that's still an M1 with 16GB of RAM and a fast SSD. ozthegweat it's a 13" MBP. It's super slick anyway, tbh. But ain't it always the way?

If it’s from work and free then I hope that post-July nothing happens to it that would mean need for a replacement.

I'm very tempted by a M1 MAX Studio but if they bring out a M2 Mac Mini at the end of the year then I'll probably grab that.

They will for sure sooner or later. My theory is that the size of the Mac mini will stay more or less the same, and will be available with M2 and M2 Pro processors (currently, there's no desktop Mac with an M1 Pro).

Very tempted by the new M2 MBA to replace my 2015 13" MacBook Pro, which is still going fairly strong, apart from the battery.
I really appreciate the fanless design of the MBA, because now I've owned a 13" MBP I realise that last thing I want in an ultrabook is a ton of heat build up when playing basic games, and then a noisy last-ditch blast from the fan to sort it out.
For example, running Dolphin emulator my friend's ancient 2013 MBA caused no heat build up (or slowdown) whatsoever. It ran great. Yet when I run Dolphin on my 2015 MBP (or FTL, or Hearthstone) it heats up immediately to uncomfortable levels, and then the fan starts going crazy.
I'd just prefer the hardware to throttle games and limit heat levels. I think the MBA would work really well as a machine to play less demanding games on, as well as being an extremely convenient and manageable laptop of course.

Anyone here used the 1st Gen pencil much?
I was thinking about getting one but wondered how the rechargeable battery fares after a few years use.

Ok, I've finally found something about the Mac I don't like.
Why does it have to be plugged in to use it in Clamshell mode?
Apple say leaving it plugged in won't damage the battery. Hmmm.

Yeah, probably. Unfortunately, I am supposed to be the paragon of following the rules which I have set, so installing unapproved apps is a no-no. It's not super annoying, I just hope it doesn't reduce the (amazing) battery life.

Haven't all Macs had the option for a while now to cap charging to 60-80% with the explicit aim of prolonging the battery?

The power management system is pretty sophisticated, even on my AirPods. I wouldn’t worry too much about leaving it on the plug

I've found Amphetamine (and its predecessor Caffeine) to be great when you need to keep your Mac awake. It's available on the app store if you're worried about it being unsigned etc, unless you mean unapproved in different sense.

They do, it’s an option but I think it’s on by default. Sometimes it’ll still charge to 100% though if you plug it back in at 80%, probably thinks you’re going to take it away.

I was lairy because my Mrs has left here 2011 MBA on the power for a couple of years and it's now basically a desktop. Older machine though. I've found Amphetamine (and its predecessor Caffeine) to be great when you need to keep your Mac awake. It's available on the app store if you're worried about it being unsigned etc, unless you mean unapproved in different sense. Corporate approval. We have a MDM setup where only approved applications are really allowed and there's a whole process to go through if you want something else. I could, in theory, get around it... but it's not a very good look (especially at audit time) if the Head of Security has done so. And I'm trying to be a good boy. I'll just leave it plugged in for now.

Macs have always been pretty resilient. Ive switched out components (that dates me) and they have still fired back up where Ive left off

Any 2011 laptop will have a shagged battery by now right, my 2013 MBP doesn’t hold much any longer

My OG 1st gen 17" Intel MBP went through three batteries before I sold it, all of them swelled up to thrice their original size.
The 00s were a fine time for expaning and exploding portable devices.
