I only just noticed all those Metroid reviews were Rob's- I skipped over them at first thinking who's this joker thinking I'm going to read all that before realising you'd changed your icon. Had a skim but will defo read tomorrow. There's a couple of games in your Goat-good lists I've never even heard of

Yeah I've been experimenting with avatars but I'm unhappy with all of them. I'll just return to the old one.

Wahhhhhhh.
Tbh, with it being new Zelda month, Silksong doesn't need to come out for another 6 months.

I went on a 2D beat 'em up binge after a couple of recent playthroughs of SoR4, picking up the SoR, Turtles and Golden Axe collections and they're such great games to play then put aside until the mood takes you again. It's a shame SoR4 hasn't kicked off more of a revival. I remember hearing something about a new Golden Axe but that might have just been wishful thinking. SoR2 is up there with Sonic 2 in terms of hyper nostalgia for me Also, to get as far as I did in Final Fight would probably have cost me about £50 in the arcade and I still didn't finish it As for actual playformers, playing through the MMX collection and they're very good. Better than classic MM. Maybe

Get on it! It's a different beast to Super Metroid and at first I enjoyed it a lot, but found it a bit random with its layout and flat on the music front. But man, it is easily the most replayable game in the series and I quickly became obsessed with it. It gets better with each playthrough and its very much up there with Super Metroid. I think I've beaten it 7 or 8 times, to 100% completion since it came out.

No chance, I don't have a Switch and won't buy one for just one game. I'm not interested in any other game on the console.

Wha?! Well hopefully it gets a port to a future console at some point. Its genuinely one of the best in genre. In terms of control, its arguably unrivalled.

Nah thanks.
If they released a Switch Slim or whatever, i.e. just a pure home console with a classic controller, without handheld unit/Joycons, for sub 200 euros, I'd actually even buy one. But as of now, even used it's too expensive.

Capcom Heroic Collection at Humble Bundle. In terms of 2D platformers, € 9 will get you Mega Man 1-11 (Legacy Collection 1 + LC2 + MM11), Strider, and Bionic Commando Rearmed.

Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) Bit of an odd one. A "new" developer's remarkable first attempt at a Metroid game that kind of gets Metroid but at the same time kind of... doesn't? Definitely a good game in its own right, but imo doesn't quite reach the greatness of the best Metroid games. I appreciate that it's a tight action platformer, I'm always in for that--even if I'm not super happy with the over-reliance on the parry mechanic. That may just be me, I just dislike parry mechanics in general. Not a huge fan of how free aim locks you into position either, I prefer the "mobile diagonal aim" of the previous games. But still, it's fine for what it is, it's entertaining enough. However, a serious problem with the combat is how repetitive it is. It feels like you're fighting the same 3 basic enemies over and over again throughout the entire game, especially those fucking bats. It's not entertaining enough to sustain the endless repetition, and the main reason why I abandoned a second playthrough because it gets really, really old. It also hurts the distinctiveness of different areas: although they differ in looks and atmosphere, the ever-the-same enemy encounters make them blur together in a way that everything feels the same. Boss and Metroid fights are mechanically solid, but they're too long, especially for how many there are. Particularly egregious with Gammas, some of which you have to fight 3 times in 3 different rooms. Too much! I've had many complaints about M2, but "more time should be spent fighting Metroids" was not among them. I even prefer the Gamma fights in AM2R, they're janky but at least they're brief. And while mechanically solid, boss encounters feel a bit too gamey for my liking. As in, it feels a bit like you're fighting generic video game bosses with the same generic patterns that you've fought in a hundred other games. In contrast, even though I wouldn't count Super's bosses among the best in gaming, they're very distinct. Take Draygon for example, you're up against a big fucking scary alien in a unique and memorable fight--in SR, most boss fights feel like "now telegraphed charge attack X, now 360° laser beam Y, now flying left and right dropping shit Z". It feels a little like it's all taken from a game design textbook, and that hurts my immersion a bit. Related to that, one thing I think the game really doesn't get is when it's supposed to let you breathe and just let the environment sink in. There's this ominous giant empty room shortly before the final section, and then there's the final sequence after beating the final boss. AM2R honours both, SR ruins both by cramming more of the same gamey stuff in. I also think it's overdoing the environmental puzzles/mazes. They're fine on a first playthrough, although even within that I had concerns about replayability. And sure enough, it's not fun to do them again on the second one. They also contribute to everything blurring together because they feel kind of the same in all areas. And last but not least, I think the game is too big. M2 wasn't that small to begin with, AM2R added some extra areas but hits a sweet spot and it stays true enough to the original game to be vaguely recognisable. SR puffs everything up too much, areas are huge and crammed with stuff. I criticised forced backtracking in the GBA games, but it's even worse here. Exacerbated by how linear the one-way paths from A to B tend to be, compared to the more open-ended, interconnected nature of the previous games. Somehow backtracking is more tedious than ever before despite having a fast travel system. I think there's a great lot in this game that screams More Is More TM like so many newer games do, probably so reviewers can say "you get 15 hours for your 40 quid" or something like that. But that's not good if it's repetitive, padded, overblown. What happened to "replay value"? In my opinion, that's a greater virtue than a long single playthrough, and one that ultimately provides more play hours per quid. All of this must sound harsh. It is still a good game built on a very solid basis, and a must play if you're into Metroid. But it does have a lot of issues that in my opinion prevent it from being up there with the previous games from Super to AM2R. 7.5/10 Just completed this, and I mostly agree. It is far too long, not helped by only having half-dozen enemies. I do wonder if the backgrounds might look much better in 3D. Anyway, my first Metroid Metroidvania and I did enjoy it despite it dragging a bit.

Abandoned a few games recently.
Panzer Paladin -- doesn't do much for me. Not a great fan of the heavy movement, melee combat, weapon collecting/swapping thing etc.
Outbuddies DX -- Lovecraft-inspired metroidvania does sound interesting, and there are some things to like. Sadly, there's a lot of aimless backtracking through a very samey environment which isn't helped by the fact that the clunky and unintuitive controls make movement and combat rather unenjoyable.
Unravel -- I'm not having a lot of fun with the puzzles to be honest. I guess you're meant to be gushing over how adorable and heartfelt it is, but since I have no soul*, that doesn't work for me. Feels a bit like a sugar overdose.
*true story

I've been struggling with the original Wonder Boy in the Wonder Boy Collection, for me it serves as a sobering reminder of how watered down and neutered platform games became after the second half of the 90s.
I just can't maintain the forward momentum required to get through the last World, that point of platforming zen where all movement flows perfectly as you weave through enemies can't be brute forced no matter how much roll-back cheating you use.

Finished: Zapling Bygone (Steam)
The aforementioned Humble Bundle contains a -50% Humble Store coupon for this little metroidvania, I thought it looked interesting so I bought it for the €6.50 or whatever it was. Not sure how to describe it, I'll just post the trailer to give an idea:
It seemed interesting enough early on, but as soon as the novelty wore off, I found it a little underwhelming. It first looks like the unique aesthetics, combined with the ability to stick to and move up/down walls, is going to make this feel different to other games, but in the end I found it's all pretty basic standard fare (at least gameplay-wise). Nothing really stood out in any way and the challenges, enemies and bosses all felt like I've done the same basic stuff in several other games already.
It all feels subdued, the soundtrack as well as the gameplay, the challenges, length (less than 4 hours on my first PT), even the unhelpful map.
People praise the narrative/lore part of this game, and certainly it is a focus of the game, but honestly I found it pretty uninteresting. You're supposed to find comic book panels to reveal the lore piece by piece, but I found it difficult to care if nothing I encountered raised my interest. But then again, I'm a grumpy old fart who can't be pleased. Anyway...
5/10
Abandoned, included in the same Bundle: Lost Ruins
One of these weirdo skirts'n'tits anime games, so naturally but in spite of that I decided to give it a try. It's from the "Dark Souls goes 2D" school apparently, and oh my God, does it seem to strive for breaking records in slow and clunky gameplay. Basic movement and combat feel so horrible I just stopped right there after ten minutes or so.
DNF/10

I will say my interest in the first one was tempered by it being a metroidvania, especially when I noticed the screen with the trinkets on that looks like it's ripped straight out of Hollow Knight
I don't dislike metroidvanias but they're getting very derivative and I'm seeing them more as the open world of 2d action games and pining for games with discrete levels

I really miss run & guns. Something Contra-like. Last I can think of is Blazing Chrome, which was great, but that was a while ago now, and I’ve played it to nauseum. But yeah, everything these days is a Symphony of the Night clone with a “Souls” reference used as a buzzword.

I have not! I’ve seen the artwork during sales but assumed it was an isometric strategy game. Will look into it, thanks!

Huntdown looks great! Good score on Metacritic, it now replaces Ultracore on my list!
