If you’re bald or balding, it’s a grade zero all over. Otherwise you just end up with bald spots surrounded by peach fuzz. Yup. This x100. Don't try and be clever with it. Just get fucking rid and move on. It's so much easier.
You need to think binary:
1 - Some hair. It's never going to look great no matter how much you kid yourself. There are bald spots, fuzzy spots and if you don't cut bits short enough, you just look like you're in denial.
0 - Own it. Zero all over and look like a man who has chosen this. Instantly put a bit of swagger into your step and stop avoiding eye contact with everyone you pass.

Hard agree. Grade zeroing it is the way to go. You're done in 15 minutes and it always looks good, and gives you maximum time before you need to do it again. I too would probably have to go to a hairdresser for anything more complicated than "the same all over" and fuck that; doing it at home for free whenever you want is one of the bona fide advantages of this.
Secondly I can't overstate the difference it makes to your peace of mind. It is somewhat ironic that being massively bald feels so much better in this regard than the thinning/bald spot/denial phase. It literally stops being something you're self-conscious of. There's no "I wonder if they noticed..." when you've put it right out there.
Or to put it another way, I can think of plenty of bald men who are considered attractive. Some even do it completely out of choice, and I have heard a handful of women state a preference for it. Name one attractive bald spot or comb over

Thinking I might grow it back a bit to be honest. It’s not that noticeable if I comb it in a certain way and use a bit of product.

Qs for anyone with buzz cuts as a newbie: 1. How big a risk is the sun on the scalp? I’m presuming for me the answer might be ‘quite’ as on holiday it’s always one place I can get burned. But is it a risk for an ‘ordinary’ warm day and I need to get the SPF spray out or is that just if it’s ’cracking the flags’? 2. What do you wash it with? I figured shampoo might be a bit daft for my first shower after, and actually used my beard cleaner stuff on it, but that’s pricey - am I wasting my time and would ordinary shower gel or just a bar of soap be fine? Is there a scalp care difference to using proper shampoo? Apologies if the questions are absolutely ridiculous, but this is virgin territory! These unknowns aside, I’m enjoying it now, and feel so much tidier when I look in the mirror. It’s also pushed me into keeping my neck tidier. I don’t neck beard normally but I do get lazy and end up having very long stubble under the beard line - keeping that off now to maintain the bearded egg look and feeling better for it. 1. Risk of sunburn is very high, because the skull is always presenting a near orthonormal surface to the sun. I once got sunburn on a cloudy day, because I decided not to use sunblocker and not wear a hat and the UV was still going through the clouds somehow. And it's not just sunburn risk, but full blown sunstroke. Not fun. So always use sunblocker if you're longer than half an hour in the sun. Or wear hats. If you're cycling, buy one of those thin skull caps to wear under the helmet, because helmets have holes that you can get sunburnt through. Some of those caps are quite stylish and you can even wear them without a helmet from time to time. Otherwise, a visit to a good hatter is worth a lot, or just wear baseball caps I guess.
2. I use regular body wash and a thin water/face moisturizer mix afterwards to avoid flaky dry skin syndrome.
Glad you're enjoying it. There are also a few advantages you will discover over having long hair. I won't spoil them for you.

zagibuThanks for the well reasoned advice. I ended up doing a bit of reading, found very little consensus and have just taken to using an ordinary shampoo. I read some people like using natural oil as a scalp conditioner so I’ve just taken to rubbing the excess from my beard oil through it. No problems so far. Only been out in the sun twice. First time I used an SPF50 and a hat and the second time just a hat. Basically need a bit of a hat collection, although not Stetson. I’ve got two nice ones but want more variety than that. Wide head though, so might need to wait until I can physically shop as they often don’t fit. For those in the cue ball or die cult - it’s not so thin at the moment that it looks wrong with the length I’ve buzzed it. Not just my opinion either. I’ll see how it goes and adjust over time of course, but maybe, just maybe, let folk do as they please - everybody is different. It *was* too thin for the old side parting with some length cut I had for the last twenty years, but am currently in a happier place, patches be damned.

As for hats, I can really recommend going to a big city and find one of those old hat shops, preferrably with a 70+ years old man who never did anything else but make and sell hats his whole life. They really know what fits your head.
Most hats do require some sort of style adaptation for the rest of your clothes, though. A regular t-shirt often doesn't look good in combination with most hats. For regular t-shirt and shorts look, there are those cheap white summer festival hats with short brim that work, or use a pirate bandana. Some straw hats also work with t-shirt look, but otherwise you might have to upgrade to a polo shirt or one of those nautical inspired buttoned shirts at least.
Also if you wear a baseball cap, don't forget to put sunblocker on the exposed part at the back of your head.

THIS IS IMPORTANT.

I honestly thought he'd never do it whilst still working. It's like his trademark, and gave his appearance some much needed levity.

Looking to get a new head shaver - have a couple that get it down to 1mm and have then used a Babylis Pro Foil Shaver to get a zero cut.
It's a pain in the arse to get it fully zero all over and I prefer the next day 0.2-0.5mm length.
Any recommendations for a head shaver that does just above a zero cut?
