Start longer and keep going down until you are happy with it. Can always take some off but you can't put it back on.
Facial hair will help you avoid the egg look as well.

Booked in on Friday. It’s time. I’m early 40s now so I think I can be at peace with it. Have had a high hairline and widow’s peek type setup since basically childhood which earned me much pisstaking but was basically static. Over the last few years the peak bit has basically got higher though leaving behind solitary hairs and I have to accept it’s now on the move. It doesn’t look good on teams calls seeing a bald bloke under a headband which flyaway wisps floating over the top. Took some selfies of the top last night and didn’t like what I saw either. Have always had an annoying double crown which means more scalp is visible than normal boys but this is beyond that. Just wondering what to have done. I don’t wanna go into the realms of Bic jobs if I can help it. Brother in law has a 1/4 on top combo jarhead style which I’d love, but my hair has always been fine (different to thinning I think) anyway and this combined with the actual thinning, not sure I’m gonna pull that off. Worse still, the Mrs likes longer hair and is a bit let’s say speculative about it. Not sure what to do. Part of thinks that if I ask for a 2 upwards all over I end up like Prince William. Also no drugs. Too old and poor for that sh*t and do not want to risk the side effects. Any baldie must make sure the sides are shorter than the top. That is the number one rule in my opinion, as a baldie of good standing for the last 22 years

Just get your own clippers and do it. No point going to a barber just for a buzz cut. Like frog says, you can then experiment in the comfort of your own home.

Just shave the lot off. I just did it again last night. I'd let it grow a few months but all it does now is bulk out the back and sides. It looks alright for a bit then looks fucking awful, so out came the clippers. I don't want to razor it so I just go in with the guard off and get it down that way. It makes me feel a million times better every time. Would I rather have hair? of course, but at least this way it looks like a deliberate effort and not like I'm trying to hang on to the last vestiges of hair I have. Kept me sideys and a wee goatee job because being a ginger I have no discernable eyebrows. If I shave everything off then I look like someone has forgotten to draw a face on me.
Shave it off Drake, all of it.

Just don't try and "style" it at home with the clippers. Either all off with the one guard or the barbers.
Yes this is the voice of experience.
I ended up looking like Lloyd Christmas.

If you're not confident of the clippers you could try the skull shaver things that you just rub all over. That said, clippers without the guard on are easy - just be sure to go all over at different angles of attack each time.

I’ve been seeing the same hairdresser for 12 years, went yesterday and compared the current thickness to the dossier of photos from each visit, so far so good, no thinning

I should also add don’t get your other half to attempt it. Ever. They too will try to style it. “Oops, made this side a bit uneven. I’ll just level it off. Oops. I’ll just bring this in a bit. Hmm. Oh. I’ll just… hmm. Do you… what do you think… hmmmm. No I’ll just…” “What the hell have you done to me?!?”

I stick to a barber's (Pall Mall Trafalgar) but am particular about the stylist I use. Lots of change there though, she's the longest serving and I don't like change.

He’s moved salon a few times, currently on Great Portland Street. We usually have a count up of all the places he’s worked I’ve seen him, I think it’s 8 different salons now

I see you don't like change either! Tbh, I miss the first barber I saw there. She gave great head...massages.

DON’T LIKE CHANGE
He’s a lovely fella and it’s always nice catching up, takes all the stress out of it when you know he’s going to do what you want him to

I’m not going DIY at this point, going to the barbers at least gets me out of the house.
That and Frog’s advice is what I’ll be following I think. Already bearded. I don’t think anybody here isn’t by the sounds of things.

Yeah a beard helps. Makes you feel less naked.

I’m back. 1 through 2 to 4 on top.
Aerial before and after pictures are staggering, but I do look a bit Carl Pilkington X Steve McFadden now.

No pics sorry, no offence to anybody here, just don’t want this account associating with IRL me.
Anyway it’s basically a funny one. I knew it needed to be done, people around me seemed to be trying to talk me out of it but now say it’s an improvement. So the lesson is go by what the organ in your massive egg shaped balding dome is telling you.

Best head shaver is the Remmington RX7.
Tried a few and it's the fastest and most efficient by a decent margin.

Qs for anyone with buzz cuts as a newbie:
1. How big a risk is the sun on the scalp? I’m presuming for me the answer might be ‘quite’ as on holiday it’s always one place I can get burned. But is it a risk for an ‘ordinary’ warm day and I need to get the SPF spray out or is that just if it’s ’cracking the flags’?
2. What do you wash it with? I figured shampoo might be a bit daft for my first shower after, and actually used my beard cleaner stuff on it, but that’s pricey - am I wasting my time and would ordinary shower gel or just a bar of soap be fine? Is there a scalp care difference to using proper shampoo?
Apologies if the questions are absolutely ridiculous, but this is virgin territory!
These unknowns aside, I’m enjoying it now, and feel so much tidier when I look in the mirror. It’s also pushed me into keeping my neck tidier. I don’t neck beard normally but I do get lazy and end up having very long stubble under the beard line - keeping that off now to maintain the bearded egg look and feeling better for it.

I ended up on r/bald a lot before I was scalped, and then the algorithm kept suggested r/tressless which is dedicated to all the drugs and treatments which I could not be arsed with. Anyway I’ve been really happy with it since, although in less than three weeks my number 4 on top is now getting on for the length it was pre-chop! I can’t be bothered learning to do it myself so will just have to budget more for cuts.

It's really easy to do it yourself, thought hay depends on what you want to do. I use a Remington quick cut, with 2.5mm on the sides and 4.5mm on the top.
Works a charm. I do it once a week

If you’re bald or balding, it’s a grade zero all over. Otherwise you just end up with bald spots surrounded by peach fuzz.

Yeah, you're really missing out on the main benefit of being bald. It's really fucking simple.
