I'm not sure about this. I don't know why they felt they needed to have people swearing and having sex as I don't think it added anything to the story apart from trying to make it all more "grown up" and gritty I guess. I'm not watching it until Sunday, but this sort of sums up my worries about it. A new GoT in all but name and murders

I knew nothing of the books, but watching this now and...it's a bit shit. The comparison to that Whatever and Bone thing that Netflix did is bang on.

Did it look weird for anyone else? The colour grading seemed odd and kept popping in and on peoples faces and things.
But, yes, this didn’t set my world on fire. Felt a bit cheap for something so expensive. Just that little bit of a lack of attention to detail. Like everyone’s costumes looked like they were the first time they had worn them. Bar the poor person who had to be smeared in dirt because he’s poor.

The trailer looked fucking awful so I was waiting to see the reaction on here. But yeah looks really cheap, doesn't bode well for LOTR really.

I found the visual side weird, supposedly 4k HDR but didn't seem like it, quite weird and grainy. OKish 1st episode I suppose, will continue a bit as other half read the first 9 books so is interested..

If you all watched it PauperVision like me, with 1080p and SDR, you would not be burdened by such First World problems.

Just put it now. Feels like Kevin Sorbo could turn up at any point.

What's he doing in our 4k thread? It's quite frightful the sort of person they let in these days. Standards have just gone.

Don't think they helped themselves with the first use of magic being someone shouting "stop" and that was it. No enhanced voice, no pig Latin, no sparkly lights or pyrotechnics of any kind. It was like someone larping and saying "lighting bolt". Felt really cheap.*
*Cheap: adj, not 4k. See also Chopsen.

It was just a bit dull; even when it all kicked off it was all fairly insipid. I dunno, I hope it picks up a bit, it’s not like WoT to be slow going.

Eh, I thought it was decent, probably a 7/10. Not great, but not the disaster I was fearing. But maybe I'm just starved of fantasy to watch that isn't GoT.
I liked some of the supporting characters. The guy playing Padan Fain has very big teeth.

Also I don't agree that it's slow-moving. At least no moreso than the "characters walk from place to place" episodes of GoT.

I was making a sly dig at the slowness of the later books!
Anyhoooooo. It’s not a bad way to spend an hour. It’ll be interesting to see how they do the Ways which were always one of my favourite bits from the first book. There are bits of it that look a bit Netflix Historical Doc, and I’m not convinced by the jumpers. Perrin looks to be really decent, and Moraine and Lan are great. The rest of the cast we shall see. If Rosamund Pike wasn’t in it I’m not sure I would be so generous with a 7/10 score.

I think the problem with the first book is that it's a bit... Aldi Lord of the Rings (as someone on the first page mentioned). A group of people going on an adventure to a great gathering of wise people, to stop the Dark Lord, pursued by orc- sorry, Trollocs and ringwrait- sorry, Fades.
It eventually develops its own identity, but the LotR influences at the start are pretty in-your-face. And that's kind of a problem, considering that actual Lord of the Rings is getting an imminent adaptation too.

I watched the first three episodes last night. It was fine. The books, as already stated, are massive and there is a lot of lore to pack in. I think it did a passable job of converting that into TV.
If ever a series could benefit from the streamlining a TV show format could provide it would be this, but I'd be concerned that the opposite is more of a risk - that they will need to fly through the content to keep things feasible. Its a tricky path to weave. I've read a lot of negative from fans of the books, but I don't think its realistic to expect the TV equivalent of the books. Mainly because that would take about 50 years and involve lots of shots of people tugging irritably at their braids.
But I didn't hate it. The characters felt okay, bar some odd changes to them here and there. The special effects were a mixed bag but I quite liked how they visualised the weaving. I'd be interested to see how well it does, it feels like they want to target that GoT market, but GoT did not start as overtly fantastical as this, so I guess time will tell. I hope it does well enough to see itself to conclusion.

I dunno if it will get the same audience as GoT, because the pitch for GoT was "this is fantasy but aaaaall grown up and NOT FOR NERDS". The whole point was that it wasn't really a fantasy show, more a historical drama wot had dragons in it.
Whereas this is closer to straight high fantasy, and I don't know if people have much appetite for that outside of Lord of the Rings. I guess we'll see!

It would help if it didn't look like something off CBBC.

I switched it off after 20 minutes. But now I'm going to watch it all and complain about it right in your face.

Meant to be watching it with the wife tonight but all these comments are putting me off more than a little. Not sure I can be arsed now.
Suppose watching one ep won't hurt.

Not seen it yet, but if anyone on the TV company end was thinking they wanted the next GoT why on earth would they choose WoT. (Other than the similar acronym). They are nothing alike.
WoT might manage to be the next Shannara. From some of the comments here, it seems like that might actually be the case.

I think it's a lot better than Shannara (not that the bar for that is very high). More "better than expected" rather than good, but there's plenty of room to grow.
(assuming it doesn't get cancelled)

The books or the tv shows? The WoT books are very much in the Shannara wheelhouse. The cheapish costumes and jumpers sound rather in the Shannara TV show wheelhouse as well. Though I kinda liked the Shannara TV show. It was a reasonably fun YA fantasy adventure, that did its best to hide its obviously low budget. I kinda respect that they tried to do a Minas Tirith scale battle when they only had enough budget for about 20 soldiers.. Season 2 was a bit crap though.

Hopefully this show wont feature multiple timelines like The Witcher. I know a lot of forumites can struggle with that kind of head-spinning complexity.

I really liked it! Granted my tastes are poor, but I liked it. On to the second!
More updates to follow. Stay tuned.
