I think some of you are doing these remakes a disservice. The original was released in 2008. The remake is due Jan 2023 (I think). That's a whole new generation of gamers perhaps encountering this game for the first time. Most of us have been around for a fairly long time, but even then, it's kind of like getting your favourite (or well regarded) movie in 4K.
I'm all for having the best version of a game. The price depends on the amount of effort that has gone into remastering a game. Upping resolution won't do it, but reworking all the art assets, as well as improving game mechanics is a lot of work, even if certain development steps can be skipped, such as pre-production.

I’m all for them remaking one of my favourite games from 15 years ago.
Doing a remake of Horizon Zero Dawn is questionable.

I fucking loved dead space. Have zero interest in remakes. What a waste of talent and time. Resident Evil 2 Remake strongly disagrees with you. As does Demons Souls. I know what you mean, but I think this is honestly one of the exceptions.

You can’t really skip pre-prod. It’s not only where you prove your design but you prove your teams, tools and processes. Every project will need it.

I think the point about there being a whole new audience there open to its sci-fi horror stylings is an important one. Let's not forget it wasn't a huge commercial success so there's plenty who didn't play it at the time too.
My memory has gone to shit so I can barely remember anything from it other than I enjoyed it and it had a really intense atmosphere.

It's like a bunch of old farts only wanting to listen to old albums and watch old movies. Let's put all the talented artists and creators onto new ips and the gaming releases would be so much more exciting. What if it's a really fucking great movie or album?

You mean re master the album or movie? I'm assuming that is a hell of a lot less work. Often I find remaster albums sound worse than the original cut and remember the terrible star wars ones.

No, sorry, what I mean is, I'm viewing it as what's wrong with watching something old if it's great, translated to why they wouldn't also touch up something great like dead space

There is nothing wrong with it, I just don't find it interesting. I would prefer a new story that looked like 2008 Dead Space over this remaster.
But yeah, if I hadn't played the original yet, I'd probably be interested.

I guess I just want to go back, and I can go deluxe this time
But also yeah, if you're not interested, then there's not much point

Video game technology improves a lot faster than film technology or music (or at least it did - we are at the point of diminishing returns now), REmake 2 is basically a brand new game. Really depends on the remake

It's also possible to do things with more modern tech that weren't possible originally, which is another good reason for remakes
The nurses in the original Silent Hill 2 were suppose to have film over their heads like condoms that would burst when killed but the PS2 couldn't handle it so it didn't make it in

Exactly this is a test case to warrant a future installment. Another example would be the porting of VF5 to the Dragon Engine and it's subsequent re-release to see if there's any interest and lo and behold there was and Sega are making VF6. It's all well and good saying "make some new IP" but a lot of times people just don't buy it so unfortunately publishers will and are laying on the remakes because they want to see if an investment in dormant franchise is viable.

I don't get the fuss. I could take DS and run it through Dall-E to get upscaled textures, models, animations in about 30 mins, 15 if you hit the Turbo button.

A new story does not mean you have to make a new IP. I've looked in the steam topsellers and didn't see a lot of remakes in there, if there are actually any in there at all.

Some remakes are genuinely great in their own right. Resident Evil on the GameCube? Incredible game and better than the original
RE2 and RE3 both absolutely top tier too
Demon’s Souls I’m not quite as “all in” on, lost something in terms of atmosphere and general creepiness

The main thing I took away from that is is the original seems to have dated a lot better than I expected.

It was always a good looking game from a design point of view.

The sound was amazing too, really stood out at the time, and half of the fear was hearing some scary shit.

I thought it had a timeless design at the time. Were it available on PS5 I’d no doubt play it again.

Probably going to avoid more gameplay / spoilers from now on. Would like DF to talk about the released footage though.
