Spraying our Asda delivery with disinfectant was my "What the fuck are we actually doing here?" moment. My first day being allowed outside to go to the supermarket and seeing how dead the streets were was wild for me. Making absolutely sure you weren't going to pass anyone in the supermarket, making sure you wore plastic gloves and how everyone had to get a temperature check before they could be let in was something that I still can't get my head round.

Saying "See you in a week or two when this all blows over" at work and then not seeing those people again for about 18 months.
Wait, was it all bad?

The one memory that sticks out to me was the VE day street parties. Our little village doesn't need any excuse to be flag waving honkies, especially when it would make Bojo proud(they loved him around here). At the end of our street is a row of 4 bungalows where a few older ladies live. They plan street parties and asked if we wanted to go. We declined as still didn't feel safe around others(especially anti mask ones) and our daughter was 2 or 3. As the day went on obviously social distancing stopped the more drunk they got. 3 out of 4 ladies died of covid over the next few months. Eeesh. That's rough. We had a street party but it was definitely socially distanced. To point of ludicrousness. 1am in the morning and we're all still drinking but shouting at each other from about 4m away (scandie style). Good fun though. On the flag thing, very understated for tomorrow. Jubilee everyone got involved but no-one bar the old biddies cares about Charlie boy.

They've got flags projected onto houses here, everywhere you look is red, white and blue.

Interesting, though not super detailed, comparison on excess death rates across countries and years. US was exceedingly fucked. UK 1st year was awful, but improved a lot in year 2 or 3 www.bbc.com/news/health-65975154

Fucks sake, felt rough all day at work then get a phone call from my dad on the way home to say he tested positive today. Was with him at the weekend.
Boshed out a test, positive, and it's like being back in 2020-2022 all over again. Supposed to be going to a show at Wembley on Sunday and family holiday on Monday. I know you don't even "have" to quarantine nowadays but still... It's a reet fucker.

My mum, a former university health researcher and current hypochondriac, follows Covid news closely and warned me about this the other day, saying there could be another spike: www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02656-9Nothing major to worry about (yet?) according to the article

My friend who lives in Sweden said that a lot of Swedes were kind of doing their own voluntary style lockdowns, in spite of a lack of compulsory ones. Early on anyway. No idea how true that is outside of his own perception.

Piers Corbyn singing a song about keeping a fart in your trousers. Or The Royal Society with all their scientists and statisticians and stuff.
It’s difficult deciding which one to believe

From the same people who last month limited who could have the COVID booster, today we have news that they’re bringing it forward by a month because they’re worried about a new variant.

Anecdotal but chatted to two different friends today. Both tested positive this week so I guess it's going to sweep through again.

We’ve had a bunch of staff off with positive tests during the summer. A couple were really sick but most just continued working from home. I’m expecting it to really blow up here during the back-to-back freshers weeks the two universities have at the end of September

I still test when I get cold symptoms (which has only been once since getting COVID over a year ago)
I just want an excuse to skip my day in the office in fairness.

I don’t bother testing, only did a couple of times during actual COVID. The symptoms are either fairly obvious or virtually nothing so there was very little point in testing. It was easy for me to do a mini quarantine when needed.

Haven't tested in about 18 months. If I have a heavy cold I just try to avoid people (especially the in-laws) for a few days.

I used my last couple of tests when I had a bad cold a few weeks (maybe even months) ago.
If I have any cold symptoms I'm not going into the office, bollocks to the mandated office days if my nose is profusely running and I'm coughing/sneezing.

My wife and smallest boy have tested positive. They're doing fine, but I'm dreading getting it. Last time it aggravated my asthma, and due to an injury deep breaths already hurt

It's no longer an excuse here. "If you're too sick to be in the office, you're also too sick to work from home." Fucking idiots.

I figured as much. I love how so many workplaces haven't learned anything from the pandemic. Or rather they just don't give a fuck about peoples' wellbeing.
