I foolishly assumed my wage was to pay for my hourly labour. I didn't realise it had a built in subsidy to cover my costs of getting to and from my place of work. And salary reduction as a WFH penalty can get fucked. Backwards way of thinking.

Perhaps, rather than call it a deduction for WFH, we just add on mileage for the shop floor fellows getting into work?
Should be mentioned in just playing devils advocate, I’m a filthy office staff type myself.

Anyone who wants their staff in the office because they're suspicious that people do nothing at home are vastly underestimating people's ability to piss away time while in an office.

I do the same work at home as in the office. I just do it in 5 hours a day and spend the other 3 watching tv or playing a board game while moving a mouse occasionally. In the office I also did 5 hours work, then was always bored and stressed trying not to let people see I was spending 3 hours in the bog , making tea, surfing the net (in a tiny window to hide from passerbys), staring out the window and just trying to look productive.

I reckon I’m probably twice as productive at home without colleagues and other distractions. If it was three hours concentrated work during time in my office I’d be surprised but home I’m doing stuff most of the day.

I last worked in an office in August 2017, and I don’t miss it one bit.
I’ve made a few good friends in decades of industry, but, honestly, I can do without the office politics, silly rules, vitriol and backstabbing.
I’m a writer now, working from home or wherever I happen to be. I also do most of the housework and looking after the little girl.
It’s really my dream come true, despite the rocky road getting here.

You know they say to wait 15 mins to 30 for your result, my positive tests take a few seconds (less than 30) to get a strong line on them. Work are saying I can go back Monday if I test clear tomorrow and Monday morning but I would be surprised if that's the case as I still feel fairly ill.

Mad innit. I didn't start feeling ill until day 4/5. Was easily 10/12 days before I felt better and well enough to shuffle into my office to work.

And salary reduction as a WFH penalty can get fucked. Backwards way of thinking. Yeah ridiculous. I save money not commuting (though often cycled) and not paying inner city prices for lunch (though could take packed lunch, just often didn't). But I now have to use gas and electricity to light and heat during the day. There's additional wear and tear to the property from extended use. In the case of my company we no longer rent a large expensive office and have a much smaller one for when needed. WFH is a financial gain to the company, and probably break even to me. The real negative impact is to those businesses which served office workers. Was near our old office in Farringdon for a meeting on Thursday and it's dead round there. The first 5 pubs we went too for lunch were closed, and the one which was open was practically empty. Most of the shops were shut. I feel sorry for them, but hopefully the staff will be able to find work closer to home, as people still need haircuts, dry cleaning and the like and will just do that locally. Landlords are obviously shitting it though and just as Crossrail was about to finally open.

Omicron cases in the community here. Going to red restrictions at midnight. I don't know exactly what it means but I'm sure everyone will go out and buy toilet roll.

Was some dopey pro-plague protest in Bristol yesterday. If nothing else it gives me something to do in the morning as I walk around town pulling down and defacing their propaganda.
Might just get some stickers printed saying "stop spring spouting nonsense" would be quicker than using my permanent marker.

Who thought this was a good idea? Ahhh, I see the fabled 'balance' has reached its utterly moronic, baffling and exceptionally dangerous conclusion.

It's no surprise given the production company behind QT.

Watching Jacinda Ardern put restrictions in and cancel her own wedding just makes me sad that we have such a shower of bastards in government.

It's admirable but probably and unfortunately futile. Will be an interesting case study to keep an eye on, learning from other approaches works in all directions. Bearing in mind the highest vaccination rate, with a lockdown that harsh at what point do you end it? There's no obvious exit strategy other than "this is us from now on" which surely isn't viable?
Guess the good thing is it's happening with relatively few community cases so will be impressive if they can fully stomp it out. For a couple of weeks.

There's no lockdown here, it's just restrictions on size of gatherings, more mask wearing etc. And the aim isn't to eliminate Omicron, it's merely to slow its spread so they can get more people boosted and manage the impact on the healthcare system. The government have told the country to expect thousands of cases a day soon enough.

Both kids now positive with COVID. Yah... If it’s any consolation we’ve both lived with a kid with covid for a week now, including coming in to bed at night, and neither of us have caught it still. I’m slightly baffled but here we are 🤷♂️

Eldest has a temperature this morning. Had a headache yesterday and wasn't quite himself. Still negative on the flows but will obviously take him for a PCR. Wouldn't be an issue except we had to see the in-laws yesterday so worried about them more than anything.

Still testing positive so the earliest I have can return to work is Wednesday. We have to call in morning and afternoon when off to update them. Phoned this morning to say earliest I can come back is Wednesday and they are like you still have to call this afternoon. What is the fucking point, it's stupid and wastes everyone's time.

Had the same last week. Tested positive last Monday morning and rang in the morning to tell work. Was told to ring in every morning or I'd be breaking absence policy. Why? To confirm I'm still unable to come in all week because that's literally the fucking rules? Some places simply can't bear losing control even for something everyone is having to put up with, it's pathetic.
Anyway, on the Tuesday I just texted in and lied and said it had made my throat swell up so I can't talk on the phone, see you Monday. Fucking cunts.
