If users THFourteen and David Richardson were here they would all let us know how judgemental we are. I respect that people have a choice. It's just, in my view, and probably the view of anyone reasonable, an incredibly selfish choice to not take it. And it should come with consequences, such as attending public spaces, your employment, your ability to mix with people in any walk of life. Because you are posing a risk to public health. The vaccines do have rare side effects, most medicines do. But the benefits outweigh the very small risks. So if your choice is to not take it, fair enough, but don't complain when you can't go to the football or a nightclub or gig post October, or if you lose your job. That's on you. There's really no arguing with that sort of folk. Their brain is on backwards.

His Uncle went blind? I mean, what? Apparently the vaccine just messed up with the nerves behind his eyes to the point where he's now permanently blind. I didn't call it out at the time because I didn't want to get wrapped up in an argument, especially during lunch. But if he tries it again, with anyone else, I'm tempted to just question further and see how far it can go. Sounds like bollocks. Had a quick google search and the only places reporting blindness after vaccination at anti-vax conspiracy sites. The only reputable mentions of side effects relating to vision are some reports of blurriness and double vision occurring for a couple of days after vaccination and these seem to be very rare. I think if people were going blind after receiving their vaccination we would be hearing more about it.

Anti vaxers going blind is probably the syphilis which they also won't get a jab for.

The whole medical tyranny excuse for not getting a vaccine or restrictions on people that don't have it is just playing into these Anti-vax idiots.
We just need a caveat that says if you're medically unable to have the vaccine you get a pass. If you have no medical reason NOT to take the vaccine then you should have to deal with the consequences.

It seems to be business as usual over in Manchester. I'm now surprised to see someone in a mask.

That is what is so fucking annoying, when you give a billion vaccines there will be crossover with people who were going to go blind the next day anyway from bad luck or syphilis or diabetes or something. It is just people are too stupid to realise correlation does not equate to causation. Personally I would brand any antivaxxers and bar them from all public spaces and shops. I've always said if you don't vaccinate your kids for measles etc you are an abusive parent and should have your kids removed, I feel the same here I may be a bit of a cunt when it comes to despising antivaxxers.

Agreed, after giving out somewhere in the region of 100m doses in the UK alone, statistically, something bad may happen to some of the people after receiving it. This could be going blind, falling down the stairs etc.
The last time I checked (a week ago) I think 41 people in the UK had died as a result of a bad reaction from a vaccine dose, with about 140 odd people having been affected by an adverse reaction from a vaccine dose. Out of 100m doses, statistically insignificant.

And it all comes down to the fact at the end of the day that yeah, you might get side effects from the vaccine. But you know what else is going to give you bad side effects and be much worse about it? Covid.

Yeah, the Yellow Card scheme is there so researchers can see if there's a link - that a side effect is reported, does not mean there is one.

We'll all be batteries in a matter of weeks, plugged into the matrix. Maybe the Anti-vaxxers had a point.

I don't know, people pray for an answer to the pandemic they get it in form of a vaccine, many vaccines but people go nope I don't trust this thing made by scientists to combat this specific thing. At this point if you were God you'd think fuck it you're on your own you idiots.

Pray for an answer to the pandemic that happended on God's watch. Religious reasoning (or lack thereof) is beyond me

Isn't religious reasoning just a combination of
"It's God's Will" = something happened we agree with/like "God is testing our faith" = something bad happened "God works in mysterious ways" = something really bad happened

You can see why it's an effective toolkit for people who seek to abuse and control others.

No jabs for kids then? I guess rolling the dice and infecting them at school is cheaper.
Just have to keep our fingers crossed that doesn’t have long term consequences.

Tbf, the JCVI don't make judgements on wider considerations - theirs is purely down to if the benefits outweigh the risks. Door left firmly open for other advice that will allow Govt to press ahead though imo.

I suppose the moral argument would be that because the risk of Covid is so low in children, that the vaccine poses a higher risk to them comparatively. You could argue that by vaccinating them, you are sacrificing a few of them in order to save adults.
I don't necessarily agree, but you could make that argument.

The other thing is that there is no data available for any potential long-term side-effects of the vaccines because no-one alive has had them for long enough. In particular, this is the first time mrna vaccines have ever been used. Using them on a population not at high risk from the underlying disease isn't as clear-cut as for adults IMO.

Oh joy, the JVCI fuck up the simple decision to at least allow 12-16 years the option for the jab. Their arguments seem stupid as I wouldn't say that there is much difference between the risk of transmission in that group and the already approved 16-17 year olds, most of whom go to the same schools as the younger group who are just as stupid regarding safety rules. If this wasn't GCSE year I would be seriously considering ripping my son out of school right now.
We really need someone to override them as they seem pretty clueless over this whole situation...

Not much data on the long term impacts of COVID either. It’s a risk either way.

Do we really want a scenario where the medical experts are overridden by politicians though? Bit of a slippery slope, as well as adding fuel to the fire of people who say we shouldnt trust ‘experts’.

Is the JVCI all medical experts or are there varying other bureaucrats in the mix too? Seems to be lot of medical experts in other countries (including more generally sensible ones like EU countries) who are pushing the vaccines in their countries. I do free that in general trusting politicians isn't a great idea, particularly our current lot. Just read some of their reasoning and the main one being kids might have time off school due to side effects, ridiculous. If that is a fear the start of term is surely the least disruptive time And, of course, actual infections can led to more time off. It would be nice if my son can feel a bit less anxious about being surrounded by maskless teens every day and actually be willing to visit fully vaccinated grandparents at some point. The bollocks about it being too many vaccines for the teens and that it might put them off (or clash, easily solved by rescheduling the others until February) others seems a feeble excuse too. I imagine most who will go for this at 12-15 will likely be happy to get any others they need too. I also suspect vaccine take-up in the age group will probably be the lowest yet. And as much as I agree they need to prioritise getting adults to take a vaccine I fear that will be a fruitless battle with all the social media stupidity a lot of non-vaccinated have consumed.

But their main argument is that covid poses so little risk to otherwise healthy 12-15s that there's minimal benefit to even having the vaccine. A government might still choose to vaccinate them to keep overall case numbers down, but the JCVI's job was purely to look at whether it's in the best interests of the child's own health.
I'm not sure how that warrants calling them stupid, ridiculous, saying they've fucked up and that we need someone to override them.
And yes they're medical experts.
