Now that definitely has a microscope look to it. I wouldn't drink anything out a petri dish round here though!

Heh. Hoffmann mentions that it looks like a microscope during the review!
I'm kinda hoping Nick will get a bad case of FOMO, buy one on a whim, and report back.

I was given some of these beans recently, by a friend who'd been gifted a kilo bag and didn't know what to do with them all.
They're not bad, per se, but I'm glad I didn't pay for them!
More than anything, it has reinforced just how much my taste in coffee has changed over the past 13 months or so - time was when I would've thought these were awesome, but now they're far too roasty and bitter for my liking.

Was in france past holiday and bought myself some 250g Kenian beans from a spdcialist store. Price was 34 a kilo so not exactly cheap.
Taste was good not amazing, but man those beans seemed to have double the caffiene! My parents and brothers have tried them as well and said as much.

I have finally pulled the trigger on a 6 month Square mile sub (red brick option) after running out of nice beans and being a bit fed up of what the local groceries coffee shops round here usually have, whilst not having time to go into the nearest city for some good beans.
Some local shops have local roastery stuff, which is good to support local peeps, but one of those in particular is far too over roasted and I'm not putting oily beans in my nice machine when i know what they're like.

To follow this up, the Arboretum is excellent - a medium-light roast with fruitiness, acidity, and all that jazz. (I won't tag Tomo, as every time I do, I discover that the coffee I'm recommending is stupidly hard to find... but Tomo, I think you'd like this!)
The San Juan is very good indeed, but almost overpowering in terms of its stewed fruit flavours. I think I'll try cutting down my AeroPress brew time from 90 seconds to 60 and see what difference that makes. Still an easy recommendation, *if* you like that flavour profile.

Ahahah. I actually placed a coffee order 2 days ago! So bad timing in that regard.
Butttt, I've had Darkwoods before and they're great. Reminded me I will order from them next round.

Anyone in the US planning to get in on this?
Was thinking about it but, my recent realization that I really don't care that much about how good my coffee tastes above a certain baseline had me rethinking the whole thing. I've come to realize that, as long as it didn't taste like mudwater, coffee is simply a vessel to get caffeine into my body and that was its greatest value to me.

The square mile subscription is definitely a big saving over their normal shop. Just seen the ‘macho’ I got is £18.50 compared to the £14 I paid.

Spent many years and dollars on various coffee devices and beans chasing the perfect personal brew.

Warrender To each their own, good sir! After all, it's not as though you've started drinking instant... erm, right? RIGHT?!
A big '+1' from me - it's very good value in that regard, and I've really enjoyed the coffees I've had so far as well.

My folks have passed on some Dear Green beans (a glaswegian roastery) they got in a shop somewhere just as my current batch ran out, so perfect timing. They're usually pretty decent, so looking forward to giving them a go.
I was going to fire into my square mile pack, but it has a very recent roast date, so will last a bit longer.

I bought another three-month Square Mile subscription, and went with the filter option this time. Here's my first batch:

This ^ is... okay. Pleasant enough, and perfectly drinkable, but a tad bland.
In fact, that goes for all the filter (cf. espresso) coffees I've tried from Square Mile, now that I think about it.

I've been frequenting a particular coffee shop since the start of the year, when it had only been open for a couple of months. The coffee's nice ( this is their standard offering); the food's excellent; and the people who run it are lovely. I didn't think I could be any more fond of the place... until I popped in this afternoon, placed my usual 'black Americano + breakfast bagel' order, and sat down at the only free table. The table in question was right next to the kids' play area. Lost in thought, my gaze drifted aimlessly across the random assortment of books and toys, and then... I saw it.
For context, I must've put this on my Xmas list for about five years running when I was a kid. I never got it - apparently Santa was sick and tired of my shit - and nobody I knew had one either, so it was one of those experiences that had passed me by.
Was it silly for a grown-ass man to grab a child's toy from the shelf in a coffee shop and joyfully set it up on the table, giggling like a lunatic all the while? Perhaps. Did it stop me? Hell no!
I admit that I needed a bit of help from a friendly bystander to get the blasted thing up and running ("Age 4+" my ass), but I was soon shoving plastic swords into slots with gleeful abandon. (I won't make any sex jokes - this is a wholesome yarn, after all.)
I will also admit that I jumped out of my skin when the pirate finally popped up and narrowly avoided a messy landing in the coffee I hadn't even realised had been delivered to my table.
It was worth the wait.

Ha! We had that for a while. Our wee lad loved it. It was great fun. 😀
On topic: My sister is meeting up with us in Edinburgh for my folks birthdays soonish, so i am hoping she will bring up some more Monmouth beans like she promised she would.

Are you insinuating that my post was somehow off-topic, forum member Vortex?
My local specialty place - which, unfortunately, doesn't have Pop-Up Pirate - is currently serving coffee from Kawa, a roastery based in Paris. The ones I've tried have all been very nice indeed.
Hope you get your Monmouth beans, Vortex, and happy (soon-ish) birthday to your folks.

Not at all, this place is at it's best when veering off-topic.
Just after reminding myself of pirate popping, I had coffee related non-news. At least until i get packs of beans in my mitts.
One thing i *won't* be repeating, is buying any bergamot flavour noted coffee when in embra. I did that once when down there, never again.
Worst beans i have ever bought. Even over-roasted shit beans were not as bad as them!

I don't think I've ever seen bergamot mentioned on a bag of coffee beans; however, I've become a total sucker for anything with fruity tasting notes, so I'm sure I'd be tempted to buy them if I did.

So was I, but I really don't recommend it. It was too much and instead of having sense & binning them, i tried mixingthem to dilute it out which only extended the trauma!
I'm still scarred by it and have veered off the fruity end back into the safety of chocolate & nutty notes now. 😀
