Coffee Jesus Hoffman has done two coffee tasting sessions online, which have both been very good. Basically, you pay about a tenner or so and he sends you 5 different beans labelled A-E. You brew them and then he does a live broadcast (or you can watch it later) where he does the same and takes you through the tastes. Really eye-opening. The last one he did had a Robusta and it was fucking disgusting lol, especially contrasted with the other ones he'd picked. That said, it was my partner's favourite!

I think that's still talking about the last one which was 2020 or 2021.

Yeah, I don't know when the next one is. I imagine it's a royal PITA to arrange as he sends out thousands and thousands of packs. But if it re-surfaces, I'll post in here.

My friend fwd'd me an email for tickets to take a tour of Coffee Jesus' coffee factory, which is round corner from where I live, but I didn't see the email for like 2 hours and it was all sold out. Not loads of tickets, but he has a mad following.

Espresso (Bambino Plus - so not top end but enough to make a proper drink), usually as an Americano and sometimes black or with a splash of milk depending how I'm feeling. Never (or at least VERY rarely) with sugar. Think I might get in trouble if I bought another brewing device after taking up the kitchen counter with espresso machine and grinder (and having an Aeropress in the cupboard) I'd give the aeropress a go. It will likely be closer to what you originally tasted.

Definitely- When I went to prufrock last time I was down in london there were loads of folk just rocking up to see the old reconditioned coffee machine they had in the store that he'd been going on about. I played it too cool for school about that and just fired into the sausage and egg butty and a flat white, but was secretly tempted to try the tasting comparison platter too. If we'd stayed in there longer, I think my wife would have lost the will to live though. Down again in a few weeks time and my sister is suggesting getting some beans from a place called algerian coffee stores. Never heard of them, but will definitely pick up some beans from them when we pass. Anyone tried them? Any recommendations?

Speaking of Coffee Jesus, I've just had my first cup of the Gombe espresso from Square Mile - very nice indeed, and much better than the two bags of Red Brick I bought a few weeks back.
COVID and rail strikes have effed up my December trips to London in 2020, 2021, and 2022, but I'm hoping to make it down this year (and if I do, Prufrock is at the top of my to-do list).

What are people’s travel/office set ups?
At the moment I take the aeropress with beans ground the night before but that only works for 1-2 days.

If I'm out I just find somewhere local that's good as it gets me out of the room. One thing I like to do before going is to work out where's good and go there, and if I really like them I'll bring some beans back. Last time I went to Japan there was a place I liked near the hotel and getting up and having a chat with the guy who ran it was a really nice way to start a day.

I do the same if I'm going somewhere out in the sticks - a rural hotel that only has Nescafe sachets in the room, for instance - but if I'm going somewhere a bit less isolated, I like to do what uiruki said and look up local specialty places online before I set off.

On holiday I have the problem that my wife hates the smell of coffee which limits trying out local coffee shops unfortunately. At work I have our cafe or a McDonalds.

If this is the one I think it is, in Soho, then I'd give it a swerve personally. It's been around for donkeys years and is basically a novelty shop. It has a gazillion coffees, which isn't a great sign imo, and all sorts of other stuff. The coffees look old and are roasted to within an inch of carbonisation.

I've got an Aeropress Go, but shamefully I don't use it much. Tend to buy a coffee at about 3pm as excuse to leave office, which is nice but more expensive ;/

I will take a mokka pot, beans and a grinder if I know there is a stove or something but otherwise I just swallow having to buy coffee.

Thanks for the info, it is in soho. She was suggesting getting beans from a coffee place she really liked last time round, and it wsa closed so will head there instead. I love this site, so much information is available by picking other peoples brains!

Had a lovely coffee at Monmouth coffee today, so picked up 250g of their bog standard espresso mix for flat white/cortado shizz when i get home. Look forward to trying that out.
P. S. My sister was banging on about how nice their brownies were, and they were pretty good indeed. Not too sweet & nice & chewy. Yum.

I've tried Monmouth a few times now and I'm a bit confused on why people love it so much. The line is always bonkers on the weekend in Borough market. Had a standard espresso each time and it was way too bitter. Maybe making it at home is the key?

I used to swear by Monmouth, back when I was all about the dark roasts, but I haven't been post-COVID and my coffee tastes have changed dramatically in the interim. Picked up some of this yesterday, having run out of beans prior to this week's Square Mile delivery: unionroasted.com/collections/all/products/yayu-wild-forest-ethiopiaIt's... okay. A bit 'meh', but okay.

The Monmouth beans are nice in my own cortado/flat whites. Not too pricy either which was a pleasant surprise!
Their coffee was ok imo, had a flat white at their seven dials(ish) place which was much quieter when we passed a few days later. At borough market i think the main issue is their not selling takeaway paper cups. You either have to fork out 1.50 for a keep-cup or wait for a table & proper cup. Given the amount of tourists/folk passing by at borough who probably don't want the additional coffee tax is probably why the queue is massive.
We just wanted beans & some brownies, so were served right away to the side of the queue at borough. Which was nice. 😀

Not a fan of those 200g bags either, I'd be too stressed out about those first few cups not being properly dialled in.
I had a sub to the Good Coffee Cartel and, while I liked their funky tins and letterbox-friendly deliveries, the coffees always ran out just as I was really starting to enjoy them.

I was a good boy at work and got given £150 in amazon vouchers so I bought this www.amazon.co.uk/Beko-CEG3190B-Pressure-Stainless-Pre-brewing-Removable/dp/B09MW9HWH7/The wife is delighted. Its replaced the grinder, the filter coffee and espresso machines so our kitchen looks a lot less like a starbucks now. And, yeah, its not bad. Not the best espresso but if you adjust the drink size it makes a pretty mean americano which is all I drink, really. Still got a hand grinder and my v60 if I want excellent coffee, but "good" at the touch of a button will do for now.

Using some black sheep coffee beans just now, and i don't know if they're usually this good, but this pack is really hitting the spot.
I had some a year or two before and they were decent enough, but these are making *such* a nice cortado.

The latest Square Mile subscription espresso is really good, so I'm two from two on that score.

I haven't been to a Black Sheep shop for a few years, but a friend and I were regulars and they did punchy espressos and flat whites. Very enjoyable when you wanted a slap to go with your caffeine.

ReviewerInteresting! I had no idea - I just assumed they had a filter subscription pick for September, and an espresso counterpart, and all subscribers got the same thing. How's the Bulambuli?
