My local tesco had a craft coffee (coffee wanker) section for a bit.
Unfortunately it has apparently been binned off. Probably because when the bags say when they were roasted o them, if they have been sitting there for ages, no bugger who cares enough to want 'craft' coffee is buying them.

I've tried a few coffees from North Star recently - all somewhere between 'good' and 'very good', but nothing truly spectacular.
These are the ones I've had thus far:

Wanker alert chimed! I'm here!
Spot on. I mean, look at that packaging. It's basically a Cézanne.

I've been without a kitchen for 6 weeks, so I am coffee-deprived and it's not fun.

Don't make me look at it.
I'll just spend more money.
Just got a 1kg bag of good beans from a local coffee shop that'll do me a while.

The current batch of Red Brick is decidedly 'meh' for my tastes - too much chocolate and nuts, not enough fruit.
The place from which I was getting two bags of Square Mile beans for £19.00 stopped running that offer on Sweetshop, but is still doing it on Red Brick and Decaf; like an idiot, I cheaped out and got the Red Brick instead of coughing up extra for Sweetshop. Not a mistake I'll be making again.

I do the square mile subscription, it’s always £14 but bought normally it’s usually £16+
My only complaint is if you don’t keep the bag there’s no way to find out what I’m drinking. Did that a couple of deliveries ago and it was one of the best I’ve had from anywhere. No idea what it was though.

Heading down to London for a couple of nights tomorrow for work so I'm looking forward to picking up some Square Mile on the way home. The last couple of bags I've gotten from Dear Green have been a disaster for me, water's just shooting through it like it's stale or something, no matter what I do. It's not old beans or anything, not sure what's going on. Everything's all cleaned out.

Oh dear. Never had water shooting through before. At least not so far!
Definitely had oily, claggy beans that hold water.
Possibly a machine pressure issue? Or grinder grinding too coarse?
Dear Green have always been ok for me in the past.

I got three bags, one of them was fine, and another one I got from a different roastery was also fine so I don't think it's the machine. I'd think that if there was a pressure issue it'd be in the other direction, not enough. In terms of grinding I've gone way under the settings I normally have - I usually go from 13 on the coarse end to 9 on the fine end, went down to 5 and it still didn't go through properly. I've also gone as high as 15 on the other end and there's no meaningful difference, changed my dose, pretty much everything. But that also means I'm nearly at the end of the bag.

Came back from London and just had my first cup of Red Brick. Even mixed with the last of the old beans and absolutely no dialling in the extraction's so much better my head is swimming with the caffeine hit. Glad that it's not an issue with my equipment after all.

I'll be in 'that there london' next month and am planning a stock up of square mile stuff if I can.
Although my sister was banging on about her favourite place, the name of which escapes me, last time I was down. Sadly it was shut, so may grab some of their beans this time round.

There's loads of great coffee in London. Was put up by St. Paul's as work is in the city so it was nice being able to grab one at Alchemy on the way into work. Their cakes and stuff are still as bad for your health as ever.
And yeah, get the breakfast sandwich at Prufrock if you can. It almost makes waking up before 5am for the early train worth it.
On the topic of equipment, I see that Niche have put out a flat burr grinder with the Duo. Very tempted.

get the breakfast sandwich at Prufrock if you can. I did that last time, so that's been ticked off the list. Definitely did well for breakfasts- another day we got a sausage & egg naan at Dishoom which lives long in the memory. That's definitely happening again!

I've had lunch there and it was excellent. I must get to one for breakfast myself, but when I'm staying in a hotel I'm usually too lazy to crawl out of bed too long before work.

Has anyone signed up for the Square Mile 'Our Pick' subscription, with monthly deliveries?
I thought I might give it a whirl for the next three months, but it seems daft to randomise such a small order; I could see the merit if I was signing up for longer, or getting more bags per month, though.

Yeah I’m on that, although I’m on the fortnightly one. I’ve just switched from the espresso to the filter option.
Not had a bad one once, it’s been different every time and always cheaper than buying the same normally. As postage is free I get the 350g each time.

ReviewerCool, thanks. I've bought a three-month prepaid espresso subscription, so hopefully I'll get to try something new in the process (and not just receive three bags of Red Brick!).

Don’t think I’ve had red brick as part of the subscription once yet so you should be safe. They do seem to make sure the taste varies quite a bit each time.

I’m at the in laws this week in Blackpool and made the mistake of not bringing any of my coffee. I’ve forced myself to try instant and it was disgusting. We went out somewhere and I’m sure the coffee there had oat milk as it had a weird taste, it was also disgusting.
Luckily we had a night in Manchester and the hotel room had coffee bags so I’ve swiped all them. They’re not great but they’re ok.

I've been getting my coffee sub from Volcano for a few months now, highly recommended and they have a decent variety of types: volcanocoffeeworks.com. I've been getting the Firehouse blend which makes a punchy and tasty espresso. Does anyone have any experience with getting their coffee machine serviced? My rancilio silvia is on the fritz and I can't seem to find anyone that will look at a non-commerical grade machine in London.

Perhaps too mainstream for this thread but having not really been able to tell the difference much I got them to do me some tasters of a few different ones - they did their standard robusta, arabica and then one
Surprisingly in the side-by-ide I liked their Robusta best (admittedly had a couple of beers beforehand) and got a bag of it. However having it back home it's not my favourite - tastes very strong and bitter compared to what I'm used to.
Was interesting to try a few things side by side (I think the others were their Bossa Nova, Blue Volcano and possibly Love Berries) as they did indeed taste radically different, way more than I can tell when tasting coffees individually.

How are you making it? That makes a lot of difference. I went to a tasting session at UE a while ago and was pleased to see they made all the samples with a v60 in pretty much the same way I did, so was pretty accurate to what it would taste like at home.
But, as a rule of thumb, if you want sweet, look at the tasting notes and go for things that mention fruit. lighter roasts that mention like peach or apricot or something. If it mentions chocolate, toffee and that kind of thing, it will be a darker roast and more bitter.
If you get a light/medium roast with fruit notes and brew it properly, it should be sweet enough to not have to put sugar in (thats how I like it/make it).

Espresso (Bambino Plus - so not top end but enough to make a proper drink), usually as an Americano and sometimes black or with a splash of milk depending how I'm feeling. Never (or at least VERY rarely) with sugar. Think I might get in trouble if I bought another brewing device after taking up the kitchen counter with espresso machine and grinder (and having an Aeropress in the cupboard)
