Hate to be the one to start this thread. Ugh.
Early this year my dad was diagnosed with terminal oesophageal cancer. He's still doing reasonably okay today but they gave him roughly a year. COVID and a lengthy delay in passport applications means there's a very real chance I might not get to see him before the end.
And today my dog was diagnosed with lymphoma. 2021 just be going in rough.

Sorry to read that. Hope you manage to get home to see your dad in time.
Ill pets are tough to deal with on their own, without that too. . :-(
This continuation of the original thread doesn't get easier.

Ahhh man, virtual hugs, that fucking sucks. Just found out yesterday my dad has got lung cancer and he's currently in the full-on denial phase. Daft cunt discharged himself from hospital while dealing with pneumonia as if things weren't bad enough.
So yeah, fuck cancer.

Shit gremmi, sorry to read that. Hope your old man can fight it off. My Uncle managed to get through it once but unfortunately got it again and passed 3 years ago. Just saying it is possible to beat with some luck.

Lost my dad to lung cancer in 2010, he was only 58. It's a total stereotype and I never thought I'd fall into it myself, but I do regret not talking to him more seriously towards the end, about his life, memories of his parents who I'd hardly known, that sort of thing. Think both of us were in denial- but I know he opened up more with my sister, so now I'm tinged with 50% glad he talked with someone and 50% why couldn't it also be me
Take every chance you get basically

Just be prepared as the secondaries are just fucking awful. They likely move to the brain. Feel free to PM me if you need someone to talk to about it.

Top man, thank you. He's got an appointment on Monday to see what the options are I think. It's doubly hard because he's been so fucking secretive about everything up to this point but my sister has blagged him around into going with him so hopefully things will become a bit more clear then.

Very sorry to hear, my dad passed away from oesophageal cancer 3 months ago, he passed away 1 year after diagnosis, it was in his liver when diagnosed. They gave him 4 rounds of chemo but saw that it wasn't doing anything in the liver. His quality of life was reasonably well maintained as the combination of a stent in his oesophagus and regular laser treatments and stretching mean that he could keep eating till the end. Is your dad getting chemo?

Thanks, and sorry for your loss. He’s getting chemo every fortnight I think. He’s had a stent fitted but had huge problems with it, the first one descended into his stomach. Current one is stable so he’s at least eating for the most part. Chemo also seems to be giving him recurring knee infections, so he has a mobility scooter to get around now. His birthday is in a week as well - I usually get him a bottle of whiskey or a treat basket but that’s not a good gift right now so I’m stumped as to what to get him.

Dad's stent slipped too, they fitted another, which was great for ages but his chemo helped the tumour a bit which may have caused the 2nd slippage, they just left it in his stomach and did the dilation/laser treatment every 3-4 weeks which also worked well and they eventually fitted another stent which settled fine too but was only 4 weeks or so before the end. For a whole year, they kept him eating which was great. From everything I was told and saw, keeping eating independently and having a stable weight is really important, not just for quality of life, keeping spirits up but also, unsurprisingly I suppose, for life expectancy so hopefully the stent stays stable. If it doesn't, there are other options. Hopefully he gets lucky and the chemo makes a difference, in dad's case, it was the secondary cancer that was the real problem. In terms of food, we found that stuff like shepherds pie, haggis, neeps and tatties, corned beef hash, creamy scrambled eggs, porridge etc. always went down well and crisps like skips and quavers and snacks like biscuits dipped in dairylea or hummus were good snacks. Anyway, my advice is to when FaceTiming or whatever, along with the normal talk, keeping spirits up etc. give your dad the opportunity to talk about his mortality, how he feels, funeral plans etc. because in my experience at least, even though you know what's coming, it's very easy to be in denial and it can come come more suddenly than anyone expects. Seems to be that during chemo nowadays, a good balance of rest and being active gets better results than just resting and recovering so being as active as possible is the way forward. I've had some wine so apologies if my ramblings aren't great but hopefully they are of some use.

In April I started to get a dodgy stomach after eating, wife teased me it was my age (I'm 37,) and it was time to invest in some Rennies.
Couple of weeks later no improvement so GP gets me tested for Chrones/celiac and various other allergies. Nada. By mid June I've lost 2 stone without changing my eating habits, this sets of alarms with the GP who gets me booked in for an ultrasound. 3-5cm tumour on my pancreas, plus smaller nodes spread on my liver.
Pancreatic cancer has a terrible survivial rate because you tend to get no symptoms till its stage 4. The fact it has spread removed surgery as an option. So in early July I had to sit my 9 & 12 year old daughters down with my wife and explain that I had less than 12 months to live. It was the hardest conversation of my life but kids are surprisingly resilient.
We've spent the summer making memories, the pastoral teams at their schools have been great and the macmillan nursing team have been fantastic for me. I have chemo every other Wednesday that keeps me bedbound till the following Sunday which sucks though.
Today I hit mf first major target: my eldests 13th birthday. My next aim is to reach mid October when I'll have another scan that will be compared to the July one. That should give a good idea on if the chemo is working and how long I have left. Assuming that goes well my next target is Christmas.
Family and friends (with only 1 exception,), have been amazing throughout.
Spend as much time as you can with your loved ones, you never know how long you've got left with them.

That’s a really rough hand to be dealt, I don’t know how I’d cope with it. I’m about the same age as you with 2 kids also so it really strikes a chord. I hope you get some sort of catharsis out of sharing, plenty of people here are willing to listen
