^ This I was a little warm on it too, but having just got the varia suit I'm enjoying it a lot more. I'm very glad the EMMI get more difficult, as, apart from the initial fright, I was little underwhelmed by the first couple. It's very atmospheric, somtimes the music is very good but it's mostly just unassuming. No way near Metroid Prime level I'm feeling overwhelmed by the 3rd one ha! I'm terrible at going off in the wrong direction and forgetting which way is the right way. I can see me stuck in that Emmi room running about in circles punctuated by death for a while...

I feel like the game really steps up after the 3rd Emmi.

Yeah, still not totally invested in it, but just been through a decent stretch of the game without Gremmi and it felt like it had a bit of a chance to spread its wings a bit without stealth sections. Fairly late game - Just unleashed the X parasites on the world... Oopsie! I can forsee a planet getting blown up soon to fix things in classic Samus style. Was pretty cool hearing Samus finally speak too (yeah yeah, Other M...)

Kotaku gonna Kotaku I guess. Kinda weird seeing a major game site basically saying "hey you know that big game that came out 2 days ago, you should pirate it"

razz all the bosses so far have been frustrating bastards the first couple of goes, but when it clicks they're all pretty damn easy in hindsight. That one is especially a bit of a bastard due to your low health pool at the time though (think it's 2 tanks and 3 parts max at that point unless I missed something)

On that particular boss, though, you can get the first phase done in about 10 seconds if: you get lucky on the attack sequences and unload rockets into his stupid fat face. Also in the second phase, the bouncing balls can be destroyed with a charge blast, and they leave Energy behind letting you top up mid-fight; same when you get back up to head level again and shoot the detritus.

Yeah, charge beam and shoot the fat bastard in the belly and get one of those balls at the same time

It shows the name on the map afterwards if you hover over the room. Possibly also shows up if you fail and then check the map when it restarts you at the checkpoint (it did later on for one) Kraid is instantly recognisable as Kraid though

After that second boss I raced through a bunch of secrets and went from two to FIVE bars of Energy. Got to area five. Realised I was gonna need ‘em all. Ramps up a tad!

Kotaku gonna Kotaku I guess. Kinda weird seeing a major game site basically saying "hey you know that big game that came out 2 days ago, you should pirate it" I will say emulation and piracy isn't quite one and the same, if you bought a copy of the game and had the know how to emulate it then that's fair game I feel. But thw Kotaku article specifically conflates emulation and piracy as one and the same which created a tacit endorsement of the latter. The article even going so far as to say the emulated version plays better than on Switch and "thank god for pirates". They even had to add an ammendment that apologises for suggesting illegally downloading a recently released game. Of all series to do this to as well, Metroid needs strong sales. There's an argument to be had about Nintendo not making older software accessible to play, but not when a game has only been 3 days out. Had an interesting time of it last night as people found my tweet about it and started acting like they're James fucking Deen arguing how piracy is good and morally correct actually.

Really want to get this, but I've been playing Samus Returns (need to push through the very last part) and I'm worried it'll be Metroid overload. Might hang on until it's in a sale.

Started this last night, put a couple of hours in (died a lot) but really enjoying it so far..
A few initial observations.
Movement generally feels wonderful, certainly more fluid than any other Method I've ever played (only spoiled by my Right JoyCon being really sensitive to where it is in relation to the doc and sometime inputs don't register...not ideal)..
It looks pretty wonderful and a few of the backgrounds have looked so much better than you think switch horsepower can deliver.
It's definitely a tense experience and when the EMMI arrive on scene you really do run for your life (haven't got a clue on the timing to escape when caught).
One frustration, when entering an EMMI area, a bit frustrating when you go through the door and the metallic fuc£er is on the other side of the door and insta-death.. I'm just glad the Gameover screen and restart from checkpoint are so swift..
Just finished the first boss and moved on to the second area and now starting to get a bit lost. It's not great at giving a direction of travel, which I'm sure is intentional, but at my old age I quite like to know where I'm going (although I was fine with this in BotW once I got into the rhythm).
Overall, very positive impression so far and very happy the Ga

It's not great at giving a direction of travel, which I'm sure is intentional, but at my old age I quite like to know where I'm going (although I was fine with this in BotW once I got into the rhythm). Interestingly, many reviews - and a few of us in here - have been decrying the opposite. It's all quite funnelled an linear, but often does an amazing job of hiding that. If you're still finding new areas, and still seeing new things, you're not lost. You're just in the funnel.

The second area I thought was especially frustrating to explore. Takes ages to get rid of the EMMI there and it's one of the parts of the game where it's the least clear about where you go next (especially each time you reverse the flow of the magma) Currently stuck on a bugger of a boss later on in the game and not sure if I can backtrack at all. Checked a guide for energy tanks and there's one I know that I can get to now to help with the fight, but I can't bloody well go back and get it. The flying one, Escue. Absolute arsehole even though he's only got 3 or so moves. Pretty disappointed with how it looks in docked mode I have to say, and some of the frame rate drops when it's streaming new stuff in. If I do play through it again it'll almost definitely be via emulation. I'm still undecided on the game overall, but feel that it will be a lot more enjoyable on subsequent playthroughs.

Absolutely loving this. Definite "can't stop playing" game for me, it kept me up until 1 last night despite having to be up in the morning.
Had the exact same problem with the hidden entrance at the start of the 2nd area, but Super Metroid did the exact same sort of thing. And if you think it didn't you're misremembering - I played it for the first time in my life about 2 years ago and got stuck where I should bomb a completely non-descript section of flooring.
The funnelling so far is weird though. It's up my street personally as I don't like getting too lost but it's odd that they've built the game perfectly like a classic metroidvania only to prevent you from backtracking

Stuck on second boss too. Just got through to the second stage for the first time. First boss easy by comparison.
Can’t stop playing but also can’t say that I love it. It’s weird. I also don’t want it to get any harder…

Yeah the second boss was a difficulty spike. I did get slightly further every try though, it's not an unfair or cheap fight at all

In the moment it feels like it's throwing a lot at you, but after a few attempts when you get some coping mechanism it's definitely a fair fight. My main gripe (and I guess it's a series thing) is only having the phases to tell me if I'm even making progress against a bosses health pool. And in the third boss fight there weren't even phases, so I had NFI if what I was doing was making significant inroads until the jump cut to the victory cutscene kicked in. It's not a problem per se, but it's so opaque that I kinda don't get the catharsis of the killing blow that you'd get in a Souls game for example. I couldn't see the end coming, so it was a damp squib.
Overall though, this is landing in the "love it" column for me. Having a great time with it, to the exclusion of all other games I had on the go.

See, I found that area frustrating because it was too obvious where to go. Like I was deliberately trying to go the wrong way and every time it was all like "nah lol follow the main path please".

Still early days but enjoying so far. Do not like handheld mode though, it's not comfortable to play at all. Might need to invest in that HORI controller.

For people talking about the controls being uncomfortable, you could all do a lot worse than the Switch Pro Controller. No problems whatsoever here. The idea of using the joycons with this fills me with dread *cough*

Yeah I'm finding the controls pretty awful using joy cons. Though I can't imagine a controller fixes everything - the grapple and missiles are always going to be fiddly I'd imagine?
