Haven't got the grapple yet but no, missiles aren't fiddly IMO with the Pro

I've got the pro controller, it'd just be nice to have a more comfortable fit when playing as a handheld.

It's missiles combined with free aim I'm cack handed at, but getting better...

I've persevered with the joy cons playing in tablet mode, because it looks so bad on my TV. Rockets vs. beam became second nature after a few hours (but was contortions and agony until then) and I'm pulling off some moves now that I was convinced I wouldn't be able to. For reference: I physically couldn't make progress beyond a certain point with Hollow Knight and the joy cons. Had to resort to the Pro Controller (which is excellent, as mentioned above) but for Metroid Dread it feels like it's gonna be far more doable. YMMV, but push through and you might be surprised.

I keep confusing the free aim with the missiles. I'm finding it difficult to get used to the button configurations, but I'm getting better. I use the pro controller in docked and the HORI controller in portable. I actually prefer the hori controller I really wish there was some kind of powered controller dock for if, id use it all the time.

I played on both Xbox and Switch, but preference the Joy Con analog sticks, myself. I guess if I had the game on PS4 instead, that d-pad would be best, but it felt good for me on Switch.

To be more specific: joy cons connected to the tablet. I didn't try them in the handheld adapter, because if I'm going to play on TV, I'll just use the Pro Controller. It was more about being able to comfortably hold the entire device and input some pretty rapid and specific controls. Just wasn't doable for me.

That's my experience with handhelds in general actually. Just permanently uncomfortable. I'd have bought a dedicated Switch console if there was such a thing

Yeah, I can't imagine trying to play this on those piddly little joycons... My hands are cramping up at the thought. Works very well on the pro controller.
Taking my time exploring the maps and grabbing some upgrades before I move on, and this is definitely the game at its most enjoyable. Some of the upgrades that involve speed boosting and triggering shinespark's ready mode, then getting to a certain area before using shinespark are just plain evil for my old man reflexes. Makes that missile in Maridia in Super look like child's play in comparison. The energy tank in Artaria has made me take a bit of a break from the game before I smash my controller!

I don't mind the control for the most part, but I do find some of the boss fights that encourage you to dodge, aim and shoot at the same time frustrating. Perhaps it so just because I completely lack experience with the series, excluding some dips into Super Metroid via emulation, but I find it really odd that they haven't gone with aiming on the right stick. This just seems the most sensible way to me. It is also really weird to play a 2D game with an analogue stick for the movement. Digital controls generally feel more responsive for this kind of game.
As I say though, this mostly just for the boss fights. General movement for the most part is fine.

Aiming on the right stick? Then what happens to jump, shoot, and dodge? For the record, because I'm Billy Big Balls, I completely forgot about the dodge/dash on that third boss and STILL kicked its arse. Who wants to touch me?

I really struggled on the 2nd boss stage 2 until I realised you could shoot the balls for health. It became trivial after that. 4 EMMI down now. Loving it.

If you watch the tells, you will know when it’s about to spew a ball your way, and you can aim a charge bolt at the sphincter. Two for one.
You should have two extra bars of energy by now. I was down to about 50 when I beat it. You will get hit, but you can see it through. Don’t forget rockets to the face at every opportunity.

Aiming on the right stick? Then what happens to jump, shoot, and dodge? I didn't realise I would need to do a complete remap when saying that . I would probably put shooting on the trigger. You could have a toggle to change weapon on the bumpers or maybe have left trigger rockets/right trigger cannon. There is the grapple too, but that could probably go on a bumper if they aren't being used as toggles. Jump and dodge should be able to be the same face buttons without any issue, as I don't think you use those whilst aiming at the moment (I certainly haven't, but I could be doing it wrong). Personally not found the dodge particularly required in fights until recently, now that I've fought a couple of the spear dudes. Found those to be the most enjoyable battles so far.

Holy shit the music in this game is poor by series standards. I can barely remember a single track even when actually hearing it. Only let down in an otherwise great game.

Just shoot them with normal cannons. It takes more shots but it means you can maneuver under them or jump.

Step forward when the balls pop out so they bounce over you, shooting as they go. Otherwise you won't always have shot them by the time they get to you and get hit. Watch out for the low bouncers but they are pretty easy to spot and you can blast these easily. Only use the normal gun, no charge.

Finished it with a pretty shameful 12 hours and 83% Spent a lot of that time faffing about to make sure that I had all of the energy tanks + parts, but couldn't bring myself to get some of the other upgrades (I had over 200 missiles, so not like I needed any more) It was pretty good overall. I'd currently put it below fusion and zero mission, but like I said earlier I think I'll enjoy it more the next time I run through it. Probably an 8/10 at the moment. I was extremely glad that the last EMMI was taken out straight away, as that mechanic had really outstayed is welcome. Although coming back and facing the purple one with gravity suit + screw attack was kind of fun after the slow paced stealthy encounter when you met earlier.

Joy Cons in that connector thingy feel great to me. It’s all about getting them off the handheld - that’s when it’s uncomfortable on Dread.
Soon as I’ve got them in the thingy, it feels great. Although might still pick up the Pro controller.

Still had two bars of health in reserve at the end too. Typical😂

Bit worried that this game is going to be too short / over too fast - someone set my mind at rest! Is it similar in play time / maps size to Super Metroid or Ritual of the Night? (as examples)? I was hoping something around the 20 hour mark?

I'd say longer than super with a larger map. 8-12 hours for the first run seems to be the norm depending on how many items you get (maybe more if you're going for 100%) Re the second boss, the second phase is pretty cool if you sequence break and get a couple of items early.

A few people have said the timer doesn't capture deaths so it may be a few more than has been quoted.
I will say, the upgrades come thick and fast after a while, to the point I feel like I've barely tried a new item before the next turns up.

I didn't really stealth the EMMIs. Just run through most of the time, checking the map to make sure I don't dead end myself. Thought the design of the areas did a decent job of nudging you the right way.

Third boss is giving me grief. Not sure if I'm able to jump over a certain move or I need to avoid using one of my suit powers.
