Will this game be in the "never gets a discount" Nintendo club? I only buy digital but it's £49.99, gonna be that for fucking ages isn't it? Will probably drop to the 33 pound sale for 1st party games. Can't see it going lower than that. Unless you pick up the 80 pound voucher thing.

Played for a bit over a couple of hours last night. Managed to reach Dairon area.
It's pretty good. Very pacey movement of Samus feels (mostly) good to control. The combat works well, with the countering being fun and satisfying to execute (I dont have experience with previous Metroid games, so can't comment on comparisons that others have). The EMMI counter feels pointless though, as I've managed to successfully do it once and that felt more like luck than anything else. Perhaps others have been able to work out the timing, but the reaction time from the prompt seems impossible.
The map itself feels quite good, albeit fairly linear. I do feel like I'm stumbling around a bit, but constantly just so happen to be going the right way. I guess that speaks to how well they've been able to mask some of tricks to guide you, but it also feels a little bit aimless at times without any clear direction.
My final moment playing last night also ended on a slight sour note, as I felt stuck in the start of the Dairon area. Couldn't find any path to take. Went back, assuming I was missing something that would let me proceed, only to find my path blocked back there too, after walking around 4 or 5 times. It was only when I started to randomly shoot walls in Dairon did I manage to find some pretty much invisible destructible blocks that would let me proceed. A strange moment in a game that otherwise I've always been able to move forwards, even if I've felt unsure about where forward is actually taking me.
The other slight issue I've found is that although movement of Samus is good, I don't like the aiming. It feels very imprecise and overly sensitive. Perhaps I just have gotten used to using my PS5 controller and need to adjust back to the 8bit-do controller on my Switch, but I'm finding it tricky to line up shots correctly and to make small adjustments to the aim. Minor issue though.
The enemies are quite varied and the EMMI's themselves are a great touch. I really like that central goal of having to defeat 7 of them, so there is good overall purpose, even if the moment to moment can be a bit aimless. The encounters with the EMMIs are nice and intense, with you mostly just having run away from them. When you do get the power-up to fight them it can be very, you get the moment of satisfaction after having been pursued for a good amount of time.

Yeah I had two instances of progress being seemingly blocked only to discover some nondescript blocks needed a good shooting. I had a purple patch of deflecting EMMI several times in a row. That patch has ended.

Never been as disappointed in my life as knowing my pre order didn't come yesterday or today.

Mine arrived this morning. Played a couple of hours at a leisurely pace up to the 2nd boss.
Had a couple of instances where I was stuck only to spray random shots around me and opened a hole.
Aim isn't too bad on the Pro Controller. I find it more precise if I press forward and move up/down from that rather than a direct up/down.

Think I’ll have to wizz another £50 today. The Pro Controller; is it worth £49.99 which it’s on Amazon right now for? Is that a saving?
Went into this weekend hoping to have a quiet one. Bought the OLED Switch, Metroid, Mario Kart (had to re-buy, long story), and now eyeing up the controller even though I don’t want to play on my 55” OLED tv having just bought the new Switch.

Perhaps others have been able to work out the timing, but the reaction time from the prompt seems impossible. I certainly haven't managed - I think I've countered successfully twice, and seen the Game Over screen dozens of times! I do perversely enjoy those bits even so. Anyway, not far in but I'm really enjoying this. It just feels really good to play.

It's er... alright. After the first couple of EMMI encounters they just become another obstacle. I wish there was more of a draw back to being caught. You just seem to respawn one screen away. I guess I've just got used to the punishment from Hollow Knights and Dark Souls. But still you should respawn from the last save station you used. thisis just too easy.

Finished it. I thought it was very good. The EMMI stuff never really stuck with me; I am sure it’s just a challenge of traversing an unknown map quickly and quietly but if it didn’t have such generous check pointing I think I would have packed the game in.
Aside from that though, I thought it was much better in every way than Samus Returns, a game I ended up dropping as I just wasn’t enjoying it. The map design is much better (I thought it felt very intuitive where to go next and the way the map draws is great for tracing your steps), they removed some of the excess systems from SR in favour of reducing wait times on things like the map scanner, and most of all they fixed the melee counter. Not only is it much more viable to just shoot enemies, actually timing the counter is much more intuitive. The frame rate might well be helping with that.
The game does seem to push the Switch to its limits though - later in the game with all the extra atmospheric effects plus your moves having more extravagant visuals result in quite a lot of chop when you’re really cruising. I was worried about the EMMI and counter elements but in the end, whether it was better coordination between Nintendo and Mercurysteam or Mercurysteam just getting better at making games, they weren’t problems at all.

It's definitely much better than any other Mercurysteam game I've played by a long distance. The biggest thing is it feels very much like they had the opportunity to finish the game to their satisfaction, which is an issue MS have had in the past.

Clock said 8 hours, felt more like 10-11 though. 66% item collection - that went up really quickly near the end as things opened up. I thought it did a good job of guiding you around and the map screen was good enough that you could easily work out where you likely missed stuff.

I just found a legit sequence break just after the blue EMMI. You can get the cross bomb early just after getting pulse radar. After you get the pulse radar, you'll be going through the tight maze like tunnels and see a missile tank to your right behind a bomb block and which has pitfall blocks immediately after, stopping you getting it. The game wants you to drop down, then use your ice missile on the Enky to the left and return presumably to the right side of the are and use the lower of the purple transport zones to leave. Instead what you can do is destroy the Enky, then speed boost back to the room with the bomb, store the speed boost, shoot the block above you to get into the tunnel, drop a bomb to destroy the bomb block and then bomb spark through to get the missile tank: streamable.com/vsz6v5If you drop into the shaft on the other side, you can get to a save room, but also at the bottom you can shinespark AGAIN all the way up to the ceiling, which has one of those tentacle doors. If you go through, you can shinespark back again to get a quarter energy tank in the ceiling (see the video here): streamable.com/2n6y77More importantly, continue on and you can fight a boss early that'll give you the cross bombs a little early. However, you can't progress any further it seems as the door leading onward is blocked. Guessing I need the screw attack to go any further. Not sure whether it'll be worth doing on a replay, but hey. Fight a boss and get an item early.

Emmi really is a bastard, which makes it all the more satisfying when you take them down. Dug a bit of a way into the second area and I'm enjoying it so far, but not hugely so.
If I manage to counter a gremmi it'll probably suddenly click with me. It's been instadeath any time they get near so far, though.

It's all in the anticipation. The animation's good enough that you can watch it and there are only a few patterns - and if you go early it still seems to trigger at the right time while Samus does that ineffectual kick so you do get that feedback.

It really clicked for me on the third area. At that point you’re unlocking skills that are of use way back in the first area and you remember you’re playing a real Metroid game and it’s fucking aces.

I'm glad you said this. Just on the second area and whilst I am enjoying it I'm a little underwhelmed. I keep trying to backtrack and explore but at the point I'm at in the game the ability to do that is extremely limited. It's hot me thinking I'm missing something or doing it wrong. I'm glad I'll be able to come back in a bit and start to mop things up

Yeah, it really restricts backtracking at first, but after you get a couple of abilities and find a few more travel points it's not too bad.
Still not really feeling it though. Got up to the boss that was spoiled in the trailers and need to do a bit of backtracking for another energy tank piece, as it's a bit of a bastard with only two tanks.

So considering this is being touted as the conclusion to a story I had no idea Metroid even had, is there a way to play the preceding games in the story on Switch? I think the original Metroid is in the NES app on Switch Online and Super Metroid (3) is on the SNES one. They need to get Zero Mission (much better remake of 1) and Fusion (4) on there too in a GBA app. Metroid 2 was GB so again no app and the remake (which is most similar to Dread as by same time), Seamus Returns is stuck on 3DS (could be ripe for a remaster on Switch though with the GB original thrown in for good measure). The story is pretty simple over the first 3 games and you wouldn't spoil much bu jumping to Dread. Metroid 1 my feel a bit old now bit you could play Super Metroid on the SNES app for its story (and being a great game). Played a bit of Dread now handheld on my OLED Switch and enjoying it. Two bosses and two EMMIs down so assuming ready to move to a new area soon. Took a few attempts at most recent boss before remembering all the moves I had available. Think I have countered an EMMI about 4 or 5 times but failed a lot more. Looks very nice on OLED too but then it was time to charge so...

Had the identical issue this morning, even back tracking to the previous area to find nowhere to go there either... Even more annoyingly, I'd read this post yesterday but forgot until now so thought I'd cocked up somehow... New mantra - just keep shooting...

Never really stops doing the "you can't backtrack lol" thing in my experience but it gets a lot less common and gives you a lot more room to manouvre after the 3rd emmi.

Think I'm going to wait on this and see if people still care about it in a couple of weeks It's absolutely a great game but like some others I've felt a bit luke warm on it over my first few hours. I will say that having just beat the second boss it's really starting to grab me. I have a funny feeling it's going to be one of those games that takes time to warm up but then blows you away by the credits

I was a little warm on it too, but having just got the varia suit I'm enjoying it a lot more. I'm very glad the EMMI get more difficult, as, apart from the initial fright, I was little underwhelmed by the first couple.
It's very atmospheric, somtimes the music is very good but it's mostly just unassuming. No way near Metroid Prime level
