Narrowly avoided ordering a 7 Pro last night. My Pixel 5 is absolutely fine so I think I'll hold off for a while yet. Kinda where I ended up. Drawn in by the Watch but I might as well wait for either the market to be flooded with them or for them to be flogged off in 18 months time.

I ordered a 7 yesterday, with buds pro. The watch was still available for me, but despite always coveting a smart watch I decided against it, as I just don't think it is very useful. It means I can't wear my nice watch, and taking off at night to charge is a pain. For sports I have a garmin.
I sold my 6 for £270. I upgraded already as I want a (slightly) smaller phone, and to be honest face unlock... I preferred the size of the pixel 5 and was bummed by the size of the 6. I upgraded to the 6 from the 5 because my screen broke and it's just so expensive to get fixed I thought fuck it. Now I've set the precedent for an annual upgrade, which is just over £300 after selling the old one. The better AI and camera stuff is a bonus, the Google stuff on that is already sooo good.
Also - the free stuff offer is always a launch thing to get stock quickly out of the door at launch. I got free Samsung buds when I got a Samsung galaxy phone at launch in 2019 too.

Am debating upgrading my watch to a slightly fancier Garmin one, really cant be doing with these Samsung/ Google/ Apple things you need to charge every day.

I've got a Garmin Vivoactive 4 and it lasts about 3 days with the Pulse OX sensors on. Longer if you turn them off. I think it also varies depending on what sort of watch face you use (black ones seem to be less draining that white ones, for example).
It also charges really quickly.

I've got a Garmin Venu 2 and it lasts at least a week between charges.
Doesn't seem to do much apart from tell the time and track exercise, and occasionally I use it to check what music is playing without taking my phone out...
Would be nice if it had a checklist app I could use for shopping lists!

Had to laugh at the guy trying to sell it for £280... Good luck mate!
Might see how they review and put a couple of pisstake offers in while eBay is flooded with them.
Wear OS really is a bag of shit, though. I've got a Fossil watch which can last a couple of days, or even after a factory reset and only using basic settings won't make it through a day.

Well, it's listed. One of the cheapest on there. We'll see if anyone wants it.

Can't say I like the design of the Google watch. The charging it every day can do one, as can the price.
Though given the way leccy is going, a month of charging it will be about the same as the cost of purchase

Yeah, so I do a lot of tracking on mine - walking, hiking, running, workouts, etc... which is probably why it only manages three days. It's a really nice watch, though and the reason that I don't want the Pixel Watch. Lots of people watching my watch, but no bids. They're waiting until the very last minute in the hope of swooping it cheap, aren't they? I should have put a reserve on (although that costs money). Apparently, I can still cancel it, though. Mwuahaha. Oh and the 7 Pro seems lovely - excellent camera. It's BIG, though. Face unlock seems patchy (it didn't want to work when I'm wearing any sort of hat, which is problematic as I do a lot), and I'm already missing the rear fingerprint sensor. Especially given the size of the thing. A front, screen mounted finger print sensor means it's a two handed unlock if the face bit doesn't work.

Hmmm... Well I do need a new watch. *glances at pile of watches on desk* I have the opposite problem, it's kind of crazy how stingy I got with tech in the last few years. I'm still using my Gear Sport from 2017 (and nevermind my Kindle Paperwhite from 2014). Frankly I don't even mind, as long as they perform well enough, but battery wear does become a real issue after so long. My watch barely lasts three days now. Well, it never really had strong battery life in the first place, but it definitely got worse with time. How long do newer smartwatches last for light usage (basically just steps tracking, social messaging notifications, some small apps like timers or stopwatch)?

I'm reading the Pixel 7 Pro impressions and you're all making me jealous. I'm going to try and be strong and hold it in. I'll keep the powder dry until next year and have the Pixel 8 on day one.

The 7 is £600 not £800!
The watch is fully free if you get the 7 pro.
Anyway, my 7 and buds arrived today.
Unsurprisingly it's basically the same as my 6 was... But face unlock is indeed nice, and stuff does feel snappier. Will have to try some low light photography, that's supposed to be much faster. I was hoping it was going to be more obviously smaller than the 6, but I think it is just about noticeably better. Max brightness seems to be a step up, reminds me of Samsung phones.
The buds seem fine. Comfortable so far, and Google assistant worked well. Sound seemed fine, I liked the bass after some underwhelming other recent experiences.

First impression of the Pixel, where's my back button? Yes I know it's a gesture now, but sill.. I miss it. 2nd impression, oh I get 5g at work now.. 685 down 62 mb up, I shall take that.

You can turn the three buttons back on in settings. Just search for gesture and it should be one of the first results. Annoyed the shit out of me when I first got my P6P.
5G is one of those things that seem exciting when I do a speed test, then realise that 4G is perfectly fine for 99.9% of my usage while out and about.

I love not having buttons, also cos my wife can't use my phone when she tries to borrow it.
Another thing is the speakers seem to be able to much louder. I could actually play them over the shower this morning!
Also, I'm enjoying the buds a lot. I've had a bunch of Bose headphones, but was actually quite surprised at the instant quiet from the ANC. The seal and fit is better to most recent buds I have tried, and they don't whistle in the wind while cycling (looking at you nuraloops). Good bass.

Sitting in my home office in loft.
Speed on my WiFi: 220Mbps (maxxed out)
Speed on 5G: 520Mbps (it did peak closer to 1Gbps).

How much is 5G a month, and do you have a cap? Seems like we could be on the cusp of a market disruption.

It's included in my standard contract, as far as I'm aware there's no speed cap, just the data limit.
Not that I can actually get 5G here, but when I'm in Cambridge or London (King's X) it's very fast indeed.
Speaking of very fast indeed, the 7 Pro is a clear step up in speed of everything from the 5. App switching, scrolling, page rendering. Everything is much, much quicker. I don't know how far above the 6s it is, but it's streets ahead of the 5.
The camera is (expectedly) excellent, too. Been having fun with the motion tracking, background blur, extended optical zoom and suchlike. I look forward to Apple inventing those things in two years.
Oh and there are bids on the watch, enough to have taken it to just under what I would have set the reserve at, so looks like this handset is going to cost about the price of a 6a when all is said and done. Happy days.

Interestingly, just looking at EE SIM only deals and their Essentials packages ARE capped at 100Mbps, although it's still better than the Vodafone alternative, which is apparently capped at 10Mbps which is made entirely of suck. My current 4G does nearly 30.

The 7 is £600 not £800! The watch is fully free if you get the 7 pro. Some "deal" they were offering me then May have skimmed over the prices as I have no intention of buying any phone over £200 ever again TBH Saying that, loved my Pixel 3 when I had it, and if I ever break that price barrier it will be for a Pixel. Fully ensconced in the Google ecosystem
