How shitty that you have to phone them rather than them phoning you.

You never talk to your bank (or anyone) if they phone you. Always hang up and call back. A lot of them will just drop you a text to say something weird is going on and to give them a ring on the number on the back of your card/app/website.
The easiest way to spot a scam caller is to ask their name and department and tell them you’ll call back with the number on the website. They will just hang up if they are trying to rob you

Against my better judgement I've just gone and preordered the Pixel 7 Pro. Comes with the new Pixel watch (worth £340) for free for a limited time, which is what convinced me. The smaller 7 gets the new pro buds (worth £179) for free or £180 off a watch.

I nearly did the same, the battery on my S21 is starting to go and a £285 trade-in for a phone I bought for £600 nearly two years ago seems a pretty sweet deal.
But the offer is valid until 17/10, so I'm going to hang on a bit until a review or two has dropped.
The watch looks phancy though.

I also just pre-ordered a 7 pro. It was cheaper than my current contract to buy it from Google and move to a SIM only deal (with quadruples my data??!?!), plus they'll give me £250 back for my 5.
Bargain, tbh.

I'm on a deal with Three that works out at £3.50 a month (instead of £15) for 100GB/unlimited after you claim cashback. Made sense to just buy myself out of my contract for the P6P early, as it still works out cheaper than what I would've paid over the next year.
They're also the best coverage round here too. Actually getting glimpses of 5G connectivity when other networks give me H+ if I'm lucky.

Wow. That's really decent.
I've been on a £49 contract for 24GB of data with the 5, but I'm dropping down to SIM only (which is £18 for 100GB apparently) now I've bought the new phone from Google. Between the trade in and the watch which I can probably sell (I don't really want a smart watch, I already have a very nice Garmin), that's a decent saving over the near £70 a month Vodafone want to upgrade.

After a new phone, and am tempted by the non pro 7. Seems a lot extra for the (massive) pro, for a just a mostly improved camera system. I bet the review embargo is after pre-order ends though...

I was tempted by the 7, but I'm happy enough with the 6, plus I spread the payments on it so still have another 12 months left.
I really want a foldable, but fuck paying those prices.

It releases on the 13th and that trade in + pixel watch/buds deal is on until the 17th iirc, so enough time for my arm to be twisted.
The watch not using standard bars for straps is very off-putting mind you, plus I'm sure the battery life will be awful. Might as well stick with my P6P as planned and just get another fossil watch one instead.

Looks like the watch offer is gone by the way, currently 'out of stock' and there's a big *while supplies last* disclaimer.

Yeah, not sure battery life is much to write home about. Neither are the Apple watches though tbf.

Yeah, inevitably shit battery life ("up to 24h") plus the expensive proprietary straps and the bezel have put me off adding it to my collection. Wake me up when they get to a gen 3 or 4 watch release.

I always find it suspicious that Google give away headphones with their phones. I'd rather just pay less.
I already have 3 pairs of Bluetooth headphones, and I really don't want the Pixel Bud Pros, specifically.
After watching an in-depth comparison with the older A-Series Buds, apparently the Pros sound muddy and generally awful, and that's ignoring all other (better) headphones on the market.
I'd be tempted by the Pixel 7 Pro + watch offer, but £850 is far too much to spend on a phone and a watch I don't need.
Think I'll just stick with my OnePlus Nord for now.

Tbh, the watch is going straight on eBay if (I actually receive it and) I'm allowed to sell it.

I've got a Huawei Watch 3 and the battery life on that is excellent. It'll run for days on one charge. The only real bugbear is that most of the functionality is locked to the Huawei app as Google have limited what Huawei devices can access in Android (you get calls and texts basically). The app does a half decent job of filling in the gaps though (and there's a third party app that exports fitness metrics to Google Fit, if that's your thing) *and* it actually looks like a watch - which is always a plus!

I sold an item on eBay last night at auction (for the first time, I think?) and somehow got a fantastic price for it, but I was a bit shocked to find out eBay now take a 12.8% cut of the final fee for private seller's items, which worked out at £100 for my item!

It's worth checking your messages for £1 final value fee selling offers. Pretty much the only time I bother using eBay these days! There's usually a thread on HUKD whenever it's on too, but might not apply to your account.
Utter fucking con, but still better than the usual "I'll arrange for a UPS deliver man to give you the money" scams and timewasters you get with Facebook/gumtree.

Oh for Christ's sake... why is this the world we live in, where you have to be 'in the know' about everything and 'activate' things, just to get a fair deal? As a first time seller, couldn't eBay just have applied this offer automatically for me, because now they've pissed me off and I probably won't use them again. Seems I chose to sell my item a week too early, as I got a £1 selling fee offer through in my messages yesterday. I had no idea about any of this.

I don't usually sell stuff on eBay, but there was a banner about it on the site this morning when I went to track a purchase.

Post by darkling on Oct 10, 2022 12:17:16 GMT
I haven't seen any banners personally, but if I was listing my item yesterday or today I may have noticed the offer in my messages. Then again I probably would have ignored it as marketing spam.
It just angers me that there's always a game you have to play with retailers these days, and as a first time customer you're likely to get stung, rather than rewarded.
If you're eligible for an offer, the retailer should apply it automatically, or at the very least make the offer visible/selectable during the checkout process.

They probably should in an ideal world, but they'd make less money that way.
Perhaps they only showed the banner to people who sell less often etc, in the hope of stimulating them to sell something so they could get commission? I dunno.

Yeah I know they'd make less money, but that attitude completely devalues the seller in their business model. Anyone not privy to these offers is, by default, a victim of their business model - the difference between 12.8% fees and £1 fees is too vast to be considered a trivial saving or 'offer'.
Anyway, I'll just have to file it under 'live & learn'. I at least got a very good price for my item, so I suppose eBay did its job well.

I recall using one of those offers in eBay and it was still deeply confusing. I put a few things up, which I thought would all come under that offer, but when I added a reserve later it seemed to remove the offer. It didn't seem to give any indication it would do this until I actually made the change.
I hadn't used eBay for years and years, only having bought a few things off it about 10-15 years ago. Only managed to sell one of three items and then a couple of days after I randomly had my account banned, with them refusing to give me any details as to why it was banned.
Terrible experience and put me off using them again. I've just used CEX since. Even though I'm getting a lot less than I would through eBay, it just isn't worth the hassle.

Ended up ordering the normal 7 & buds. Back to having no interest in new phones for another 2.5 years or so.

Narrowly avoided ordering a 7 Pro last night. My Pixel 5 is absolutely fine so I think I'll hold off for a while yet.
