To be fair to id/MachineGames/Quake, controllers weren't even a consideration when it was made. Twitch shooter through and through. You're always going to be hamstrung playing on a controller. I'm not a PC twat but Quake is a PC game Mouse look was actually disabled on quakes launch. Most people played with just keyboard or with a joystick. It shouldn't be as sluggish as it is. Good vid on the issues. m.youtube.com/watch?v=WETTsuoNBn0&feature=emb_title

Still can't fathom why mlook was off by default (and it wasn't even in the options, it required a console command to enable, otherwise you had to hold a button) when the rolling demo had the player circlestrafing. I remember I was like "wow, this guy is good".

Sluggish controls which I'm sure they'll fix aside, it's a nice port.

Yeah that's probably the best one. I'm really enjoying it again now I've got it on kB/m. Half way through episode 2 on hard. Nightmare will be a bit tough till I get used to where everything is again. And totally forgot the TWO shamblers in the necropolis

Would be nice to get some of the old commercial expansions, although I'm sure the rights would be a nightmare.
Also, saying that the quality was altalenating would be an understatement. I remember that the average unofficial expansion disc had around 80% shit maps, 10% didn't work, and the rest was okay but usually forgettable.

I remember trawling through tons of maps. Some were standout but most were average really. I think I just prefer the vanilla of the original for single player, and the deathmatch and ukcl levels for multiplayer. But I'm old and set on my ways now

Arcane Dimensions added too much and didn't really have the same atmosphere as the base game. I tried playing some custom maps a while ago but didn't really find anything above what I'd consider decent

Quake completly passed me and not sure why, was there for doom/wolvenstein/Duke nukem/ un real tournament.
Just never played quake, not sure if it will have the same appeal without the nostalgia but feels like I shouldn't pass on it.

Darn, I didn't realize how big Arcane Dimensions got with the last update. There's maps upon maps upon maps. And when that gets old, there's even a remixed edition of the original four episodes with randomized monster types (nothing like seeing a Grunt suddenly shoot a rocket at you).
Shame it will never arrive as an official mod, because some of the assets are lifted from Hexen 2 and that sounds like it would be too much of a legal mess to untangle. I'm playing it with Quakespasm and it works very well.

Bought this on a whim over the weekend. I remember playing the demo at a mate's house back in '95(?) and being blown away by it, although never got the full game as I don't think my PC at the time could run it. I did later get (and complete) Quake 2 though Any, nostalgia trip over, and having played through the first 3 or 4 levels what impressed me the most is how solid the game feels! The guns are all weighty and there aren't really any cannon fodder enemies. The level design is varied and the game itself is pretty challenging - even on Normal - having finished 1 level with just '3' health. Brilliant

Agreed. I don’t usually love replaying games this old but it really is fantastic. I’m on Switch. It’s so speedy.
The level design is so good.

Just need Quake 2 now and I'll be in heaven.

Speaking of Quake 2, does anyone know what are the best user-made levels for it? I'm thinking its Arcane Dimensions equivalent, basically. I know Q2 was always more focused on multiplayer, but surely there must be some big episodes out there.

I remember playing one called Back to the Front way back but I have no idea if it was any good. I was playing some Quake 1 sp maps a while ago and, apart from a few big names, there really weren't many good ones so I wouldn't expect much from Quake 2 in that respect

Some that are decent though: Dark Undergrowth Small Pile of Gibs Deaf, Dumb and Blind

Can’t believe I missed them at the time but these three RPS Quake articles have made for some excellent holiday catch up reading www.rockpapershotgun.com/topics/quake-renaissanceAlthough they are guilting me toward buying a replacement copy of the Masters of Doom book after I loaned my old one out and never got it back. Bloody loved that book.
