Honestly, N64 graphics are some of the ugliest out there. The only games I still think look good are the two Zelda games and that probably has a lot to do with nostalgia As a cool teenager who owned a Playstation from release I always though the N64 was bad and anyone who played it was a stupid baby who only liked baby games for little kids. As a big grown-up teenage PC gamer who didn't own a console till the first Xbox, I thought all of you babies who owned consoles were babies with your little toys for little kids. Quake was a big-boy game for big people with their big PCs. |

Dug up this classic video from 2011. Can you be nostalgic about slamming the FPS genre for having devolved into a barrage of Calladoody clones? It felt like the genre was dead under the sea until Doom 2016 brought it back to the surface so it could gasp for air.

I suppose I should update my earlier Gamepass on PC bug report that an uninstall and reinstall seemed to sort the issues.

Finished the 2016 episode yesterday night. It was a mixed bag. Some good stuff but also pretty tedious at times. They added a second secret level in this new version which was quite hard.
Bring on the new episode tonight.

Never played Quake back in the day. Figured I might as well try the remaster. So far I like it. Particularly enjoy the level structure. That being that the levels actually have structure!

Nice to see Fly Taggart getting a mention. I did enjoy those first two Doom novels quite a lot. Less so the third and fourth. I still regret that they got charity bagged in a house move by my parents. |

For example, Malice can't be played properly because the game doesn't recognize non-standard keys (the mod had a reload button mapped to R and also some other keys mapped to new items). Copying the config.cfg file doesn't seem to help either. I guess Total Conversions will be an issue until this problem is sorted out.

I got the big boxed Malice 'free' (£7.99 IIRC) with a UK gaming magazine not long after release and remember being pleasantly surprised with it at the time and been meaning to try it again on some sourceport. Similarly, it would be nice if Quake 2 RTX had full support for its official expansions (I think there is a partial port with some cutbacks due to lack of material settings or something) Also for some reason the new Quake Port made me go back and start playing Heretic again (using Chocolate Heretic)... |

Malice works great on Quakespasm btw. It was a great TC, with slightly tedious map design at times. It had cutscenes too! Guess people knew how to do some impressive stuff with the Quake engine by 1997.
It also predates Shogo as an anime-inspired FPS. Although the inspiration is less overt, it's clearly there.
Surprisingly the devs are still around. I wonder if they could be contacted by id to release the game again as an official mod for the new Quake.

Quake done Quick in 19:49 with third person (IIRC) camera, in a tiny file. Might see if I can dig one out and if it works in this version.

Oh, so this is out, and it's a free update to all who have the original on Steam.
I like it, it even has the N64 version within it, deathmatch bots for those who don't want to get pwned by pr0s on teh interwebs (is that how we talked in the 90s?). And, maybe most importantly, it has the NIN soundtrack intact and working properly.
Time to pound through it for the first time in a long time.

I'm not sure I can do quake on nightmare with a controller, but I'll give it a go
Edit - looking around, it seems keyboard support on PS5 works, but you can't aim with the mouse. It just needs a quick +mlook but it's not there at the moment.
Be great if they could put that in a patch.

Think there's a bug in the Steam version. If I set always run to off, the shift button actually slows me down further instead of running. And if I set it on, pressing shift makes me... run even faster. Pretty sure it's faster than AVP 1999 even. I'm easily jumping to places I should never be able to access, short of a rocket jump.
On a side note, I'm surprised at how many times in a row I could complete the original game without tiring of it, and how much of a slog the expansions feel in comparison.

Nah, the game has awful pad controls unfortunately, it's one of the main complaints. It's got huge deadzones and a really nasty acceleration curve that makes it really difficult to do fine adjustments.

To be fair to id/MachineGames/Quake, controllers weren't even a consideration when it was made. Twitch shooter through and through. You're always going to be hamstrung playing on a controller. I'm not a PC twat but Quake is a PC game
