Oh, cool. Didn't realise the Steam version got updated. Does it have the soundtrack included now?
Just can't see this working on a controller, but I'll give it a go out of curiosity.

Sorely tempted to get this on Switch even though I have Game Pass. I know I'm an idiot but that portability...

Hmmm, PS5 or Switch fro gyro controls? I do love the single player on this, that era of FPS has never been beaten for me. Devs can't be arsed to design levels anymore. I kept hearing Doom 2016 touted as a return to the original design - I was gutted when I played it.

Original vanilla Quake was not WASD, it used cursor keys. You could easily set it up for WASD though, unlike Doom and Heretic which required faffing about with config files. That said, there was one line you needed to add to autoexec... +mlook 1

Turns out my recollection only goes as far as E1M4 as it's starting to get hazy. I must have just caned these initial levels so many times. I've definitely completed the whole thing a few times but it's only the first half of E1 that's really glued in my brain. I also ended up in the secret level and I can't honestly remember ever finding it before. Met a shambler who scared the shit out of me.
The ambient soundtrack is the greatest thing ever though. It's still genuinely uncomfortable at points.

Still miffed they changed the default keys in the Heretic/Hexen releases though.

This quite a package really, all the expansion packs, new episodes and mod support.
Very tempted for 8 quid, probably try and clear a backlog game first and get it next weekend for the bank holiday.

In the very early days of reconfigurable keys, when WASD became the default, I decided I was going to use the numeric keypad instead. I did this for at least a couple of years, until the need for about 2 metres of desk space to scoot the keyboard along became too much of an inconvenience

I can use both WASD and the cursor keys. Years of Magic Carpet have trained me well.
I still find it weird that Quake didn't default to mouselook though.

Had a quick look at the PC Game Pass version of this and while quite nice it definitely has a few glitches. Wall clipping in tight corners (and a few ceilings) has appeared numerous times and a weird glitch which I didn't have the first time I ran it but was there the next few times where the keyboard worked but would beep intermittently while playing and stopped working on the 'console' (again this did work the first time for a few timedemo tests).
It has potential though. Quake64 seems an odd choice of mod but it is there to download, not sure if that port had anything exclusive (like the Saturn version did).

IIRC a lot of environments were squashed vertically to fit on a cartridge. I think there might have been some different lighting effects, but that was about it?

From what I saw there were some slight alterations to level geometry at points and flashier coloured lighting but don't think there's anything else.

Finished the game on Nightmare. Twenty-five years later, I still got it (ok so it helps that I have played it many times in the past years). Also this version's Nightmare is not as bad as the original. Having less HP sucks, sure, but damage seems more like hard mode.
To the expansions next. I have only played these once, centuries ago... I seem to remember they weren't very good. We'll see.

How was Dimension of the Machine?
Just reread your post. Nevermind. Scourge of Armagon is great. Didn't like the other one, the levels were too big and just didn't feel very good to play. Dimension of the Past is also great though

I'm holding out hope for a Q2 remaster that allows mods (ok, just Lithium) or even better a Q3 remaster that allows Rocket Arena.
It's a sure fire hit in the current climate. Quake Live was a disaster and far too early.

What are the odds of a cheeky quake 2 release? Quake 2 was on 360 already so it's not out of the realms of possibility.

Considering that between 2021 and 2024 it will be the 25th anniversary of... a bunch of late 90's games, it might be a good chance for some remasters. Or at least untangling some legal messes for a re-release. Can I get The Neverhood on GOG already?

I wonder if the new consoles could manage the Quake RTX build at all as that would be the obvious route there. Then we can skip III and get a decent remake of IV...

Back in the day it took all morning to download the multi file QTEST demo from Compuserve.
All 12MB of it.
I still use that as a speed guide to this day. What took all morning to download on dial-up now takes a second or two.
Jesus. What a LAN party we had that weekend though. I ruined my hands using cursor keys, but what a grant time we had.

Quake 2 had the RTX release recently, which was a pretty significant improvement on the whole. Would be cool if they did a lovely package like this Quake version, but wouldn't be surprised if they leave it.

Ex-homebrew developer who ported Quake to the OG Xbox back in the day got to work on the new release. Living the dream Been subbed to that guy for a long time, he does some interesting stuff and talks about all the weird console hardware modding that happened. But when he talks about games, he always includes some gameplay footage that he recorded himself and my god, he stinks at games. It's funny how the people with the deepest knowledge are terrible at the things they preach.

I dunno, have you played those console ports? The controls are horrific. It'll turn Fatality into that gui in the Doom 2016 Polygon review.

I got to E1M4 on normal on console and panic shot a grenade straight into a fiend and gibbed myself. It was going extremely well until that point...
Console controls aren't terrible, but default settings are definitely in need of some tweaking.
