Gotta say, I was expecting the usual source port, which would have made this version pointless for anyone on PC. But this Kex Engine port is not bad. The extra graphical features aren't too intrusive, the animation interpolation and improved models actually look decent, and the game runs super smooth. The new Nightmare mode (assuming it really is taken from the Copper mod) is also better than the original. Also, it looks to me like the fov is about 110 which is exactly what setting I had years ago! Either that, or I need stronger glasses.

There's a FOV slider so that's not a problem anyway.
I guess lack of mod support means it's not really a viable port for long-time players. But for a playthrough? Yeah, sign me in.

Haha, oh dear... Sorry if I got anybody else pumped up for this with my talk of a total remake.
I'll still play it of course but I couldn't have been more wrong!

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if this is a cheap way of gauging interest in the franchise. To see something of this akin to Doom 2016 would get me absolutely erect.

Loved Doom Eternal but played Doom 2016 after and found it far less engaging, didn't even finish it. Eternal was so great though

I'm like a pig in shit. Also, first death match and I wasn't awful. The old reflexes are still in check! Only I passed the controller to my 11 year old and he's better than me

It's not as bad as I thought on the controller. It's no where near as good as kb/m but still doable.
Well, i say that now. Time and alcohol will tell.
The music alone will push me through it. Can't wait to hear the music when you've beaten cthon again

Barrysworld was named after Barry the Time Sprout from the Robert Rankin Armageddon books, fact fans. I was in a Q3 / RTCW clan on there (and Jolt iirc) called Ground Zero. Mid tier too Just tried Quake on Game Pass, on series X. Sharp but floaty. Shit really? I was reading a load of Rankin stuff at around the same time I was playing Quake deathmatches all the time and was often on barryworld servers. Always wondered wtf that name was about.

Ahhh Unreal Tournament. Getting headshotted continuously on Facing Worlds. Those were the days. Watched an LGR video that reminded me I must have dropped hour and hours into unreal tournament and then somehow forgot about it. That sniper level was class! Ah my dad's 200mhz MMX those were the days

UT03/04 + inatagib was so much fun.
I used to be pretty fucking competitive as t that, but my old man reflexes wouldn't stand a chance now.

Interesting that this got released on Sony and Nintendo hardware, too. A sign that not everything has been locked down to MS just yet.

For some weird reason I always pictured Big Boy Barry from Games World (Sky's early nineties sister TV show to Channel 4's GamesMaster).
...He was the only Barry I could think of back then, alright?!

I was thinking the same however, it's possible the other platform holders already knew this was coming in advance and had already signed agreements for it to be released on their platforms. Kind of similar to how Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo are still being released on PlayStation, as timed exclusives no less, despite the Microsoft acquisition of the Zenimax owned studios.

That's what I thought, but then why did one random bloke called Barry need so many servers? Not that having it named after a talking sprout makes any more sense tbh.

Nice to see it apparently has split screen on all formats, a much missed feature of console games these days. Odd that it wasn't on GOG yet as the originals are and Nightdive stuff usually is (bar Doom64). So is this a free upgrade to pre-existing Steam Quake owners or just a new SKU that replaces it? It is about time I buy an easy to run digital version of Quake to replace my old CDs. New episodes are always nice if they are well done.
At least Quake started with the WASD m&k controls so no fiddling needed unlike the Heretic re-release on GOG...
