I didn't get a modem till maybe 96 or 97, but I remember reading all these exotic-sounding things like "barrysworld" in PC Gamer and just getting really excited, nervous, and confused. There was something about that era of PC gaming that remains incredibly evocative to me, these new technologies unfolding. You could have two games come out two years apart and it feel like a generational leap. It was mind-blowing. Five years separate Wolf 3D and Quake II. I'll always find that incredible. Totally agree. It was a really special time. I have detailed memories of specific games, people, servers, everything. In fact, I have a cd somewhere of some recorded clan games in quake. Fucking hell, I must dig that out. |

Scratch that thought, it's available now, for 10 euro. PSN and Xbox. Presumably Game Pass too.
Edit: for now just Xbox One and PS4 (and Switch). Sounds like the next-gen upgrade is coming later.

It's called Dimension of the Past. Don't know if that's one of the new ones included with this but it's a good sign either way

Well, I don't mind playing through Quake again (thanks Game Pass), this time with a controller - that oughta feel new.
But I hope they added some auto-aim a la Doom, otherwise I can see a lot of pain in my future.

The Game Pass app lists Quake 1 for console and PC, but also Quake 2 and 3 for PC! Judging from the screenshots and the filesize, they are probably just the original versions that are already available on Steam. |

I was thinking of playing on gamepass on the One x but to be honest there's no way I'm not buying it. 7.99 is worth it for the soundtrack alone. Punch my gums, this is a right turn up to the day.

Uhm, there's no HDR, nor quick resume... I still can't get surround to work properly on this TV... and achievements are shared between the Windows and Xbox versions...
Tell you what, I'm playing it on PC. At least I can actually select Nightmare mode.
Btw, surprisingly it seems to be running on Nightdive's Kex Engine. They really are everywhere lately, not that I'm complaining.

This looks like the Copper Quake mod. |

Barrysworld was named after Barry the Time Sprout from the Robert Rankin Armageddon books, fact fans. I was in a Q3 / RTCW clan on there (and Jolt iirc) called Ground Zero. Mid tier too  Just tried Quake on Game Pass, on series X. Sharp but floaty. |

It's got the intro music and I just checked e1m1 and it's got the ambient track kicking off. It's great. I won't be able to play it properly on a console, but it'll be awesome coming in from the pub and having a few smokes and just enjoying the music and pissing about on it again. Win! \o/ |

Gotta say, I was expecting the usual source port, which would have made this version pointless for anyone on PC. But this Kex Engine port is not bad. The extra graphical features aren't too intrusive, the animation interpolation and improved models actually look decent, and the game runs super smooth. The new Nightmare mode (assuming it really is taken from the Copper mod) is also better than the original.
