Quake has been rated for current consoles: www.esrb.org/ratings/37924/Quake/Is it a remaster or just the old game re-released? I guess we will find out shortly as Quake con is happening. Either way I'm excited as I loved Quakes 1-3 back in the day. The less said about 4 the better...

Proper remake by the sound of it. Think it's done by MachineGames so pretty fucking hyped for it! The DF guys are interviewing them about it as part of quakecon on the leaked programme.
Absolutely loved the original (one of the few games that I've ever played through on the highest difficulty) so curious to see what direction they take it in.

I played through the single player fairly recently and don't think it would work very well on console. It's too twitchy. Still really fun to play on PC though

MachineGames put out a new Quake episode a while ago that's well worth playing. I had no idea until just recently

Part of me really wants old quake playable on consoles, but I would take a new quake if it was Machine Games mind you. Haven't played quake 1 since the 90s!

If anyone wants a good Quake fix now, I highly recommend Arcane Dimensions: www.moddb.com/mods/arcane-dimensionsIt's a collection of extremely good fan made maps with new weapons (plasma gun, triple barrelled shotgun!) and enemies. I would honestly say many of the maps are better than anything in Doom 2016/Eternal.

I doubt that they are doing a Quake reboot/remake if it just got rated by the ESRB - that means it's probably going to be released soon, and if it were such a big scale project, we would have heard about it before.
Most likely it's just a release of some modern source port, perhaps modified by Machinegames with new features (ray tracing? New episodes?).
As cool as it is to finally get Quake on consoles, I want to see what it has to offer over something like Quakespasm with its countless mods and maps.

Quake is one of my favourite FPS of all time. It was the game that forced me to dump my poor 486 (which really wasn't up to the job even at minimum resolution) for a 100mhz Pentium and a 3dfx Voodoo so I could play death match.
I'd be so up for a remake!

Shit I remember playing it pre 3dfx. Then my brother went out and bought a 3dfx card for the family PC and my tits nearly fell off. So smudged and glorious.

I think a Quake remake would be better handled inhouse by id. It would benefit from more of the new Doom treatment rather than story focussed new Wolfenstein games

I had a mate in school who was part of a pro Quake clan back in the dial-up internet days and he was pretty bloody good at the game. I remember going over another mate's house for a big ol'LAN party (remember them!?) one weekend and there was 4 or 5 of us vs my Quake clan friend. He absolutely decimated us, it was actually bloody embarrassing. You'd spawn and he'd kill you within a few seconds, going from thinking you're 'the shit' to just being plain old shit, the absolute twat 😁.

I think the Quake 3 Arena era was a really great time in gaming, especially the way developers actively encouraged user modding and there was so much cool stuff going on. Quake 3, Counter-strike, Team Fortress Classic, Unreal Tourament. Loved it. I don't think there were as many dickheads online

It was more being griefed and getting kicked off the server because you were playing too well.

There were loads of dickheads playing quake 2 but it was overall nicer, that is true.
Quake 2 was where I made the leap from software to hardware rendering. Omg that was an incredible leap. Basically nothing like that since then! (Except maybe VR)

I was pretty shit at Unreal Tournament, but I got fairly good at Counter Strike back in its beta days. Played in a clan in the Barrysworld (remember that?!) League.
We were decidedly mid-tier.

TBH I'd rather see a decent console port of the original Quake (and Quake 2) over a full-on Doom 16-style reboot. I just want to play the original game again, and it's pretty fiddly on the PC to get it running (disclaimer: if I can't download it from Steam and just play it with no hassle I will consider a game "too fiddly". I apologise to my younger self).
Give me OG Quake in 4K 120fps, and/or with full-on path tracing. That's what we want.

I still remember PC Zone's tagline for this game on the box. "A work of pure genius". I'm sure another quote was "one of the most important games ever made" or something like that.
It certainly was. Played it for absolutely years and years. Quakeworld + 3dfx was just the best ever!
I remember going to a lan party from a combination of people from Wireplay (remember that?) and general online quakeworld servers. It was great fun. Met Sujoy Roy too. Christ, he could play.

Basically nothing like that since then! (Except maybe VR) I remember being amazed at the difference between 16 bit colours and 24 bit colours. But that leap from software to hardware was something else.

Yeah, I think it had a few different games at first. Had a crappy client thing you had to configure, and unfortunately, just had the same set of people. I thought I was pretty good at it, and then I went on the open internet servers at barrysworld and got my arse handed to me repeatedly Got better though in the end!

I didn't get a modem till maybe 96 or 97, but I remember reading all these exotic-sounding things like "barrysworld" in PC Gamer and just getting really excited, nervous, and confused. There was something about that era of PC gaming that remains incredibly evocative to me, these new technologies unfolding. You could have two games come out two years apart and it feel like a generational leap. It was mind-blowing.
Five years separate Wolf 3D and Quake II. I'll always find that incredible.
