Yeah absolutely. I ramped the sensitivity up as it was turning through treacle.
Also, bloody hell does the N64 version look like absolute dogshit. I thought they'd at least crisp it up a bit like other N64 ports, but they kept the smeared look of it and its just hideous.

E2 m4 or 5 is now starting to get a bit tricky. Erm. I can't fucking remember any of this, but I like it.

I got to E1M4 on normal on console and panic shot a grenade straight into a fiend and gibbed myself. It was going extremely well until that point... Console controls aren't terrible, but default settings are definitely in need of some tweaking. I didn’t realise that motion control was on by default and my ranger was like trying to steer a drunk.

If it helps, go to Options, Input and change both Aim X and Aim Y to 10+. Massive difference.

Honestly, N64 graphics are some of the ugliest out there. The only games I still think look good are the two Zelda games and that probably has a lot to do with nostalgia

Yeah they do not hold up well today at all. Stuff that heavily used gourad shading like SM64 still looks passable, but other games like Turok and Perfect Dark definitely benefitted from their remasters. Can almost guarantee nobody would have cared as much if they'd released looking like they did originally.

I'm playing on OG Xbox One because I'm a skank and Quake stutters and hitches like an absolute fucker, it's constant. I've turned off everything I think can hurt performance-wise and it's still awful, is there a trick I'm missing? Interestingly, I knew Reznor had done a load of sound FX for this (you can tell) but what I didn't realise is that is all he was originally asked to do and spent pretty much ALL of his available development time doing that and then chucked out the music in a few weeks when Id asked at pretty much the last minute. paulsemel.com/vintage-interview-nine-inch-nails-trent-reznor-2000/

To answer my own question, turning off dynamic shadows seems to do the trick.

Quite liked q4 to be honest. But I've always liked ravens games. It bugs me that I've got this and q2 for the 360 and neither are on back compact. Q4 runs like a dog on the 360 as well, would be so nice to play it properly.

I liked Q4 as well. Nothing groundbreaking but it was a fun ride.
Q3Arena remains the highpoint of me playing online games. Don’t do any anymore now.

I remember (kinda) enjoying Quake 4 back in the early 360 days. Then I tried it again on PC last year, and it was so bad. The shooting, the enemies, the level design, everything was terrible. Rose-tinted glasses doesn't even begin to describe it.

Had a quick play on this today and for me, it hasn't aged as well as Doom. Cool to have it on console though.

I actually prefer Quake 1 to Doom. It's just so much faster (love the feel of Quake), plus jumping and more verticality to the levels. Quake is a really nice sweet spot in level design where they actually sorta kinda look like things but they're still pretty abstract and designed more around being fun to play rather than looking like anything. Before it was all office buildings and warehouses

Before it was all office buildings and warehouses Quake 1 is the most surreal of all those games, and I love it for that. I mean, clearly the main contributors for its dark atmosphere are the dark graphics and of course the soundtrack, but I also love how the settings don't make any waking sense. They seemingly randomly blend together whatever is frightening in a hellish maze without any obvious purpose aside from giving you pain. And that is what nightmares do. By being so nonsensical and surreal, Quake 1 is one of the most nightmarish games I know. Boy I missed that in Quake 2 and any later game.

Agree, love the level design in Quake. It lacks some of the purity of Doom’s gameplay for me but the complexity it adds still feels fresh after 20 years of “realism”.

The console FOV is defaulted to 75. 😑
Banged that up to 100 and it's now much better.

Dissolution of Eternity is definitely quite a bit harder than usual. Still not much to write home about though, once you get a few weapons you're set for the rest of the episode.
Quake always felt a lot easier than Doom. And Quake 2 was even easier.

Yeah, there's just something special about quake 1. It's just so much darker and bizarre than the others. And the soundtrack obviously sets it miles apart in the "what the fuck is going on" department.
I've been putting it on, getting to a level where I like the specific track and just leave it on while I'm pottering around the house for background noise ffs.

I think it's due to less and less hit scan Enemies as time went on Probably. It's also the reason why I find Duke Nukem 3D harder than Doom as well. There's so many hitscan enemies in that game. And Blood is just evil (but it gets a little easier later on). When it comes to Quake, the only way to make it really difficult is to starve the player of ammo. And from what I remember of the Dimension of the Past episode from some years ago, I guess MachineGames knew that.

By being so nonsensical and surreal, Quake 1 is one of the most nightmarish games I know. Boy I missed that in Quake 2 and any later game. Yeah, I was interested in seeing where they took a remake if that's what was coming. Quake is a product of its time and it would be really difficult to replicate it. The levels vaguely represent castles and things like that thematically, but twisted labrynthine versions that feel alien and otherworldy. Enemies like the Fiend, Shambler and Vore haven't even got faces. It's a more surreal version of evil compared to Doom's edgey metal Hell.
Quake was going to be a much different game during development but it was taking so long they endeded up just turnng it into another Doom to get it released. Daikatana is probably more of what Romero wanted Quake to be (but good)
As for difficulty, aside from hitscanners, I'd say it's because you have more movement control in Quake over Doom and less enemies to deal with
