We have only one way we can engineer our way out of this. That is to solve the heat problem. How do we stop the sun heating the planet? By reflecting the sun's energy away somehow. Either with big massive mirrors or particulates in the atmosphere. This could buy us the time to wean off fossil fuels and begin tackling the amount of CO2. Seems this idea is catching on with the US, EU and UN all saying this needs more research and investment. All happening way too slowly though and at the pace we'd need to work at given the scale of the problem there would no doubt be serious side effects for parts of the world. In my opinion this is the only real way out of this as a political change will not happen in time. Oh no Geo-engineering is like pandora's box, all kinds of unforseen misery with hope at the end that it all work out. For example, cloud seeding has major negative consequences, you cant have rain without taking it away from elsewhere. You would probably need space mirrors btw but I am not a engineer despite having a university master in Sustainable Development. I hate to break it to people, but climate change can no longer be stopped. Co2 lasts 100 years and tipping points have been reached. If anything, climate scientist are downplaying the severity of the crisis and its speed. Instead of building up saviour complexes like stop oil now, communication is required why we still need these measures. Any acceleration stop gives us time to invent new measures, plant more trees and shift to renewables. We also really really nees to start investing into resillience measures (stop heat islands in cities, invest in water retention etc etc). I actually considered making a topic of Sustainability on this forum to share some of my knowledge/experiences. Due to my illness I cant work atm and really miss interacting with people on this topic. My work connects me quite a bit with sustainability, and I'd echo this comment where the science is down-playing the danger. Reason is obviously that if you tell the truth, everyone will just give up and... ahem... burn through the remaining resources like they're US Republicans. A short number of years ago, the acceptable target for net zero was 2050. It's now changing/changed to 2030. That's an impressive acceleration. Usual caveats on predictions, interpretations, message management etc. And of course culture wars. /Not a scientist

Serious question - how many people would have to be killed to actually influence this? No way I can actually seriously awnser this since its not just about number of people but here is a attempt. I would argue the developed world is reaching its peak soon but fertility is too high in Africa, Pakistan, Indonesia. They are slowing down not fast enough basicly. What is actually needed but never ever going to happen, is a reconfiguration of our economic systems worldwide. GDP needs to die fast, welfare needs to be rated higher, externalization needs to end (passing the bucket of emissions etc to a different country so we can be "clean. I can go on and on based on my master degree and limited 4 year work experience. In short in my opinion: We need to actually create a circular economy that makes sense. You would not believe the amount of bullshit I have seen in regards to circularity (using elephant grass coated in a thick later of plastic to make a bench thats "70%" biodegradable) Massive increase in forest cover, eco system recoveries and denser living. Energy mix consisting of giant windfarms on sea, solar energy, nuclear sustainable hydro etc. Huge increase in public transport, mainly trains/trams/trolleys/metros/cycling. I despise the current narrative on electric cars and the lies being told about electric busses/trucks. Electric cars have their place but not like we are using them now. We need to stop buying so much garbage in the developed world. Everything needs to be made repairable, our phones are dogshit in terms of design and need a radical overhaul etc. Sustainable diet: I do not for many reason believe this a vegan diet. But basicly you need to only consume 250 grams of meat each week mainly chicken with small amounts of fish based on where you live. Less dairy products, no nonsense avocado's and focus on local products. This is my "short" awnser. I am no longer truely a expert due to my illness past 4 years but I hope this gives you a idea.

But thanks for reassuring me that I could actually adapt to the new world, as I've slowly been doing that anyway. Massively cut down my meat consumption, dairy is next on the list.
Travel and transport is the big fucker but if we all accept that, like, working is nonsense and have the time to take a bus and cycle then fine.

Look up where people live with excess wealth of 100 million and you have your awnser. Maybe start with the Shard in London if that is closeby. Work temporarily as a glass cleaner on high rises and work your way up like Tom Cruis.

What do we care, we are Welsh, we are used to the most incredible extremes of temperature.

My plan is to get a wood stove and become a cannibal. Should be able to last quite a while like this after the collapse.
