Finished Midnight Mass. Not so much a horror, scares are far and few between, but it is a drama that's worth your time. It's a slow start and I know people got turned off by the volume of monologues, but I didn't mind at all. It all builds up to some incredible pay off by the end. All supported by some great performances and a character right up there among the list of evil characters you wanna reach through the screen and smack like Joffrey.

The next time someone doesn't like my cooking, I want to have had Willem Dafoe's Neptune speech memorised and ready to go.

Also watched 1 ep Alice in Borderlands in the hope it would come me up to the standards of Squid Game... It didn't. It's a different vibe for sure. Alice feels like a manga/anime in live action. It hits a lot of anime tropes like the psycho silent killer, the crazy pretty boy, the endearing but naive best friend etc. Squid Game you can interpret as having a deeper message to it while Alice is just schlocky entertainment. I still actually prefer Alice in Borderland to be honest. It's definitely more live action manga/anime in style (I think it's based on one?). Finished Squid Game last night and it's still brilliant. Wasn't quite expecting it to end the way it did but I presume that, either planned or not, there will be a second series of it at some point due to how successful it has been. I would definitely be on board for that.

Baki Hanma is out, if you're into impossibly muscled men ripping faces off and the like. Weird that it's not just shown as season 3 or whatever of Baki the Grappler, but there you go.

Each story arc seems to be classed as a new series. I was watching it in the background last week while I was working and, obviously, the mrs walked in during the scene where one big muscled hunk is pissing on another muscled hunk who just sits there laughing.
'at least these cartoons are branching out from women being raped'
Thanks, Baki.

When the mrs worked for ITV, you could pitch ideas internally for fun and profit. If they got made, you got money and a percentage. During the 'Celebrity [XXXX]' fad about 15 years ago we kept pitching celebrity formats and kept getting knocked back because they were already being made. We gave up after pitching 'Celebrity Circus' something so dumb, they cant have been making it. But they were and with Zammo off Grange Hill. The host of a podcast (Geoff Lloyd, Adrift) I listen to did similar - think his idea was celebrity rollerskating or something. Rang 2 separate friends in production only to find out that was the big one everyone was trying to crack.

Yeah Squid Game was really good, though I didn't really care for the ending Still though, it's a solid recommendation overall. Yes, that's the one thing I didn't care for either, but the rest more than makes up for it. It would have been nice to have a happy ending, that contrasts with all the misery the main character went through. Instead, his mother died alone on the floor, and the show seemed to want to focus on unnecessary twists instead.
It left me wondering what the story's message was. I'd assume the message was "family is more important than money" if it wasn't for the fact the main character was in debt to a dangerous gang, practically estranged from his family for not having enough money, not to mention his mother's medical bills, so the show went out its way to establish early on that money is the most important thing in life.
In this sense, the main character had no choice but to compete in the games. In fact... the entire second episode was spent reinforcing this fact. I was left a little unsatisfied by the largely miserable, depressing ending. Was expecting him to have an eye patch at the end.

The King 8/10 Been on my list for a ages. Best historical drama I have seen in a while, a sweeping epic easily matches the classics of this genre. Well worth my time.

‘You’ is actually a great watch. I’m 3 episodes into s3 and it’s pretty riveting stuff.

Yeah, it's definitely understandable why the acting seemed so bad in those scenes. But as I said before, I thought the characters were supposed to be outlandish anyway, so had no major issues with it - although the scenes themselves really weren't necessary imo.

I had a feeling Season 3 would be shit so glad to hear it's decent.
I'm currently watch I Know What You Did Last Summer on Amazon which is similarly addictive trash.

Is it about a load of depressed people sitting at home watching trash on streaming services, occasionally stopping to check death rate statistics?

The live action Cowboy Bebop trailer managed to be worse than I feared. I can see what they're trying to do but it just doesn't hit the mark for me at all.

Shame too, because I thought the intro sequence which was pretty much a shot for shot remake of the anime's intro showed a lot of promise. I thought they were Robert Rodriguez Sin Citying it. But the clip was corny.

New Cowboy Bebop trailer out, not turned my frown upside down. Sub par CGI, lack of chemistry, corny dialogue, you name it, it's got it.
Will at least watch the first episode.
