So I finished Brand New Cherry Flavour and I really enjoyed it. LA, witchcraft and weirdness. Like a modern, extended Tales of the unexpected. The sort of horror story I would write, if I could ever be arsed and could actually write.

Is it decent quality? I’m not against low budget at all (I love a lot of indie films) but when films feel cheap and the acting is bad I’m out...

Although it’s about a low budget film initially. Almost Lynchian at times, but that is overstating the quality. Have you seen under the silver lake with Andrew Garfield? Reminds me of that at times, strange LA people, an indie vibe, but is a lot more horror. The lead actress gets her boobs out for no apparent reason far too often, so often I got numb to them. Seemed unnecessary. Give it two episodes, you’ll know if you are into it by then.

Kate 7/10 Surpassed my expectations, great action, Ramona Flowers does a good job, and Japan looks spiffing. Had some dodgy CGI which is always off putting but nothing to ruin it. Solid overall.

Thought the same really. Watched it tonight and was better than I was expecting even if they did the thing where a woman’s only motivation can be a child.

The Mardy Fish tennis doc is very good and timely, as an insight into the unhealthy culture of the US tennis system and anxiety disorder more generally.
Posted a bit more about it in the tennis thread. Very much recommended if you like sports docs that have a bit more than the typical underdog gets knocked back, trains hard, then wins cliche (disclaimer - it does contain this cliche too but's there's more going on).

Is it still leaning hard into that awkward transatlantic vibe?

The sort of horror story I would write, if I could ever be arsed and could actually write. I finished watching this a couple of days ago too. I think I liked it... It was certainly weird. It felt a bit Neil Gaiman-y to me which isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on your tastes. I liked the strangeness of it all but I found the ending pretty unsatisfying, plus it was hard to root for anyone as they were all terrible people. Which I guess may have been the point. 6 or 7 out of 10 I guess...

Has anyone watched the Bob Ross documentary? I do enjoy his shows, but not sure if I really want to sully the memory with the management shenanigans.

I find it really jarring. Mrs Maybe loves the show but I constantly get taken out of it by the Americanisms.

I'm sure I'll watch Sex Education but the ending to the last series really irked me.
They also keep pretending Otis is interesting enough to be the main character when clearly it should be Adam.

I've seen one comment suggesting that there was a move away from the teen romance melodrama. Which I think is a good thing.

Squid Game is really really good. Yea, really enjoying it too. Some heart-wrenching moments in that (ep6. I mean). Haven't finished the series yet.

The intro for Cowboy Bebop looks... not great? It's not terrible, and I could see what they were trying to do, but it looks a bit cosplay convention.

Yeah Squid Game was really good, though I didn't really care for the ending Still though, it's a solid recommendation overall.

Neill Blomkamp’s Oat Studios shorts are going up on Friday. If you didn’t catch them on youtube when they first came out I highly recommend
