I watched the first 2 Midnight Mass episodes, standard Flanagan goodness but in a more interesting setting. Sadly, my other half won't keep watching with me so I'll have to shit myself on my own

All of Seinfeld has just been put on. In Dolby Vision weirdly.

That first episode of Squid Game is quite something. Not good for people with misophonia though.

1st two episodes of Midnight Mass are a bit of a slog but it's warming up nicely now.

Not really sure how I feel about this
I guess it's nice to see Patrick Warburton again?

Is there actually a Lego Seinfeld set? I’d buy it

If I was 30 years younger than Undertaker choose your own adventure would be perfect. Its very silly and way better than it deserves to be but then New Day can make anything entertaining.

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm loving Midnight Mass. Seen complaints that there are too many lengthy monologues and I kinda get that, but I've also enjoyed listening to them and it's helped towards building to some satisfying and emotional payoff in the story thus far. Gonna smash the next 2 episodes tomorrow, hope it sticks the landing.

Just Started Fauda, recommended by a bunch of people in the before times. Pretty good, 5 episodes in.
Also watched 1 ep Alice in Borderlands in the hope it would come me up to the standards of Squid Game... It didn't.

Only got one or two episodes of Squid Game left but it has been fantastic. It actually managed to care about most of the main characters even though I knew most of them would end up being killed off due to the nature of the show. The marbles episode nearly had me in tears, and I was even a bit gutted when the woman and the gangster guy died in the bridge game. Very good indeed.

Anyone remember the episode of Cheers where Cliff Clavin tries to do Stand-up comedy and all his jokes are along the lines of, "So you know when your TV breaks? And you have to call out the TV repair guy? What's up with that?!". This is the level I'm getting from Seinfeld having never seen it before. Does it improve in later seasons? What's up with that?

The first series isn’t very characteristic of what it becomes. The issue with the stand up is Jerry was so huge and influential at that sort of act that stuff appears cliche and dated that he was out front with at the time

The first real tipping point is when Jason Alexander is based on Larry David rather than an attempt to write a Woody Allen character (season 2 or 3 I think)

Yeah Squid Game was really good, though I didn't really care for the ending Still though, it's a solid recommendation overall. Yes, that's the one thing I didn't care for either, but the rest more than makes up for it. It would have been nice to have a happy ending, that contrasts with all the misery the main character went through. Instead, his mother died alone on the floor, and the show seemed to want to focus on unnecessary twists instead.
It left me wondering what the story's message was. I'd assume the message was "family is more important than money" if it wasn't for the fact the main character was in debt to a dangerous gang, practically estranged from his family for not having enough money, not to mention his mother's medical bills, so the show went out its way to establish early on that money is the most important thing in life.
In this sense, the main character had no choice but to compete in the games. In fact... the entire second episode was spent reinforcing this fact. I was left a little unsatisfied by the largely miserable, depressing ending.

Also watched 1 ep Alice in Borderlands in the hope it would come me up to the standards of Squid Game... It didn't. It's a different vibe for sure. Alice feels like a manga/anime in live action. It hits a lot of anime tropes like the psycho silent killer, the crazy pretty boy, the endearing but naive best friend etc. Squid Game you can interpret as having a deeper message to it while Alice is just schlocky entertainment.

Agreed, not a huge Anime geek, though I like a select few. Probably missed a lot of the references.
Such is the wealth of content available its got to grab me in that first episode for me to continue, a straight up spew of exposition front and center failed to engage me.

If you are including anime and whatnot, there are loads of 'killer gameshow' things around at the moment. Theres that one set on a rooftop about tits and a computer virus that is trying to find angels and the other one about the phone app that gives children magic powers and encourages them to kill each other. And thats just on netflix.
Its quite the genre.

Thanks, its not a genre that I am particularly looking for TBH, it had been on my NF list for a while, in the back of my mind I had high hopes for it, then SG happened and kinda ruined my appetite for it I think.

When the mrs worked for ITV, you could pitch ideas internally for fun and profit. If they got made, you got money and a percentage.
During the 'Celebrity [XXXX]' fad about 15 years ago we kept pitching celebrity formats and kept getting knocked back because they were already being made. We gave up after pitching 'Celebrity Circus' something so dumb, they cant have been making it. But they were and with Zammo off Grange Hill.
