This ain't much, but heres a support groups website for depression in the UK. Hope you can find a way out of what you're going through and let me know if there's something else I can do to help. I'm not good at this kind of stuff I know, but I'll be hanging around.

Finally plucked up the courage to phone the docs to speak about my mental health. been putting it off for months and months.
"Can I make an appointment" "Nothing in the next two weeks and we aren't taking for May yet." "So I can't make an appointment?" "No. Call on monday." "Why?" "To make an appointment." "But I want to make one now." "You can't" "okay, thanks for your help." "Bye"
Awesome. The moment has passed.

That's really shit.
Resources are just stretched beyond belief - other half is a doctor in psychology working for the NHS and every department gets squeezed from all sides - lack of funding, targets to discharge patients/keep waiting lists down, departments trying to bounce patients to other departments because they just don't have the time etc. She works an hour or two extra every day and it still isn't enough to keep on top of the backlog.
Keep trying pal, you should get through eventually.

Yeah it's not great. I remember I got "lost in the system" when I applied for therapy through my oncologist, had to get one myself and they NHS provided one got back to me a year after I applied. I'm glad I did my own work there, I don't really want to think about how my mental state would have been if I hadn't.

I don’t even want much. I just want to level this shit and take the edge off the fucking lows. Every day is a god damned rollercoaster and it’s fucking exhausting.

What about going directly to a counselor? When I had stuff to get sorted, I went to GP and he said, a) anti-depressants, and b) I can refer you to a counselor.
So I just started looking for a counselor and found one. It was the best thing I have ever done in my life.
It's absolutely worth it mate.

Can’t afford a counsellor. Which of course is part of the reason I’m a fucking mess.
Just been driving for three hours and had two panic attacks en route.
Joy.

Ok. Counsellor sessions are on average, about 40-50 quid.
Even 1 session is invaluable, never mind 4 or 5.
Translate that cost into game purchases.
And sorry to hear you've had 2 panics attacks. Hope you're OK and put your feet up if you can mate.

Yeah I know plenty of folk who have only had a handful of sessions and say it helped immeasurably. Panic attacks whilst driving are no fun, sorry that happened

It's getting to the point where I can't function so guess I just need to finally do something about it.

I've been on sertraline sine 2017 and it's just not working for me now. Had to wait two weeks for them to suggest taking 200mg a day now before I try other medication. Dr was quite direct and said that I would most likely never come off the medication now. I've done CBT through NHS and it helped in some regards but as soon as it finishes it takes alot of discipline to keep things up. I passed on private sessions due to cost but seems you guys have good experiences with it. So might be tempted? Moods as you say wunty are exhausting. I go from super highs to super lows at the drop of a hat.

My sessions were 45 quid each. Considering how they've helped, I would have easily paid 450 quid each. You can't really put a price on sanity.

Also worth exploring if work.has any support schemes. Big companies usually have an employee assistance program or something. Good luck both of you.

Always a bit reluctant with work. Although it's confidential i always worry somebody would find out. Despite the companies best intentions the attitude around MH etc is still behind the times and you would be getting a "label"
I find the idea of talking it through with someone positively terrifying aswell

Despite the companies best intentions the attitude around MH etc is still behind the times and you would be getting a "label" I find the idea of talking it through with someone positively terrifying aswell That is exactly why it's beneficial to talk about it, to realise what's important or not. And the terrifying feeling is exactly the feeling you need to realise you need to talk about it. If you don't, it builds up. It is all straightforward, the main problem being is that we don't often experience this so mask it under all kinds of bullshit. But if you just talk about it out loud, on the table, you understand that it's not actually terrifying at all. You just make it that way because you don't know any other way to deal with it. Hence, the value of counselling, which basically makes you say all this out loud which makes it feasible to deal with

the problem with nhs conselling is its all cbt-focussed and time limited - im getting nothing out of my current round of therapy and already halfway through the 6 sessions...and i know for a fact im only going through the motions of the targets...once the sessions are up, i'll be no further on and back to living in hibernation from everything
to access anything beyond cbt, you seem to need to go privately - it is expensive but there are services that charge donations rather than fees if you're happy having a counsellor in training doing their hours
or, if there's a related cause, there are charities that offer it free - my wife used to work for one that took on a lot of gamblers for free counselling as it was funded by the gambling industry and also people affected by suicide
it's worth hunting down, though, the right counsellor for you is worth their weight in gold
