Should probably be renamed The Watch Wankers Thread, in keeping with the other aficionado threads. Plus that's smutty. "Winding by Wanking" has a nice ring to it.

I tried on the tissot prx automatic green dial today. Very nice watch and how they make and sell that for £550 is beyond me. Felt and looked like a £3k watch. Tissot, and Certina as well, punch above their weight IMO. In my search for a new diver I stumbled upon the Certina DS Action Diver, which is available in 38mm (12.2mm thick, £670) and 43mm (13.1mm thick, £785) in black, blue and other colours. The 43mm even comes with a ceramic bezel and an on-the-fly adjustable microadjust. If those two features were on the 38mm, or on the discontinued 41mm (which had a quartz movement instead of the Powermatic 80 like the two others… the line-up is a bit of a mess), I'd have ordered one already. Here's the 38mm in blue:

I've never looked in this thread before. Definitely the most surprisingly niche thread I've ever seen. Fancy watches are classic mid life crisis material. That's definitely our demographic.

I finally found my first watch! Or at least nailed down the exact model. Some kind person has scanned and archived every Argos catalogue from the 80s and 90s. I tried the 1987 one first and sure enough there is it! Bottom right, blue buttons: archive.org/details/argos-spring-summer-1987/page/n83/mode/2upTimex Marathon 50! Can't find any for sale at the moment though sadly.

My 2013 Tissot, it was a present for doing something for someone.

I used to have the Omega equivalent of the 70s Tissot the PRX is based on (though the original didn't have a waffle face). I absolutely loved the symmetry of it, but the bracelet was a ridiculous hair puller.

OK so I decided to do some prototyping. I can't stand movements with rotor noise that is audible in a quiet room (e. g. working at my desk at home). Or so I thought; I never owned a non-silent watch before. Also, I wanted to scratch that Submariner look itch. Long story short: I ordered a Tisell Diver, a so-called "homage" watch (i.e. a close replica without the Rolex logo), for €260. Without that god-awful cyclops! Gets good reviews online. And it has a movement with above-average noise, so if I can tolerate/get used to that, I should be fine with other, high-end movements. Nice comparison shot I found online:

First impressions of the Tisell are very good, feels solid. Cons are some sharp edges, bracelet is a bit rattly, clasp feels cheap and the date change crown position is easy to miss. But a watch with a ceramic bezel, sapphire glass with AR coating on the inside, and a bracelet with glidelock for €260 is great value.

Kinda fancy the Omega Seamaster two-tone with Sedna gold on a rubber strap right now... too blingy?

I think that watch on the two-tone bracelet is too much (let alone obscenely expensive), but with the rubber bracelet, or a black leather strap, is blinged-down enough.
If only I hadn't the wrist circumference of a smallish toothpick. But I'm able to pull off a 41mm Aqua Terra, so there's some hope left. The other option would be the 39.5mm Planet Ocean.

We visited an Omega Boutique yesterday and I tried on the Planet Ocean, Seamaster 300 and Seamaster Diver 300M. The Planet Ocean in 39.5mm was weird; its dimensions are off. It is way too thick for its small diameter. And the 43mm one is just a huge hockey puck. The Seamaster 300 is quite nice. The GF was blown away. But I'm not a big fan of the vintage style and the fauxtina, and it looked and felt like it didn't adapt to the wrist nicely. The Seamaster Diver 300M in black with two-tone Sedna gold and the rubber strap was just gorgeous. The sales rep held it up to the cuff of his white dress shirt, and that combo was just absolute killer. I didn't like the bracelet; not because of the two-tone blinginess, but its size and the lack of taper makes the watch look even bigger on my small wrist, and it looks a bit 90s to me. But even if I'd get it with the rubber strap, I would probably replace that with a black leather strap anyway. I'm still not entirely sure about the size, although I think I can (barely) pull it off:

I'd look at the Brietling Super Ocean Heritage. Black and Gold bezel with the black strap.

I don't really like the look of Breitlings. Also, last time I was trying on watches, a couple came in who were interested in Breitlings, and they acted and he looked exactly like how I imagined someone buying a Breitling would look/act like. Twatty, that is.
EDIT: I didn't mean to say that buying a Breitling makes you a twat. I'm sure they make quality products and if someone likes their looks, good for them.

I've had the Tisell Diver for nearly three weeks by now: - Visually it is a very close match to the Submariner. It is a great way to scratch the itch from a looks point of view and to see how I like the design after some time has passed.
- Finish is nowhere near a real Sub of course, but it punches above its weight for a ~£200 watch.
- Tisell lets you choose if you want the cyclops or not, thank God.
- The bracelet is a bit shit. The clasp has the Glidelock system, but it is hard to operate. I also have it set to the smallest position all the time, as there are not enough links to remove and the clasp is not wide enough to accomodate the first tapering link. Also, the end links are very loose and get jammed on the bezel all the time, which then makes the bezel hard to turn.
- The Miyota 9015 movement is not bad accuracy-wise, but a bit noisy.
- It's probably going to be my designated beater watch, it should be quite robust with its ceramic bezel and sapphire glass.
I've now put it on a NATO strap, looks and wears great:

Divers are so completely pointless to me, no diver wears one anymore and the only water they ever see is from a showerhead, and soap destroys the gaskets in them so you can't even do that. They're just a useless set of theoretical statistics that will never be tested.

You can say the same about almost any other watch style, pilots don’t need to calculate fuel burn on their watches any more and when was the last time a racing driver used a chronograph?

For me it's man jewellery, so looks are probably the biggest part of deciding which watch to buy. And if that happens to be a diver, so be it.

If you do get one I reckon the mission to mercury is the best shout as the case looks like proper ceramic (feels like cheap Plastic though) and it would look good with a black grey nato. Also it has a nice contrast black grey dial.
