No matter how much I think about it, I just cannot get my head around far right Trumpist Americans aligning themselves with a Russia that openly wants to return to soviet Eva glory Putin is 'anti woke' and anti homosexual. For those in the QAnon crowd that's enough.

Russia bans British flights from its airspace, I’d be absolutely relieved to be told my flight to India is going the long way round and won’t be shot down by some Russian child soldier

Surely there's an important nuance there? (no intention to speak for Mr toof) One can understand why they think that, without being able to grok how they square the circle of two hugely conflicting ideals?

I think it was successfully instilled in a generation that 'always question authority and think for yourself' was a great thing. The problem is that it has resulted in a whole mass of people who just automatically disbelieve anything from an authoritative source, and lap up anything that seems counter to that. But it becomes very hard to fight against, because then you're just accused of believing everything that the authorities tell you, and as we know there is no middle ground or nuance on the internet. As someone who grew up listening to punk / rock bands and authors who espoused thinking for yourself and questioning authority, I can't help but thinking that this isn't what they had in mind. And I find myself in the unexpected position of arguing that they probably should often listen to authoritative sources rather than just disbelieving everything they say on reflex. A lot don’t question authority, they question the opinions they hope aren’t right. They blindly follow Boris and Trump who have the authority but don’t listen to actual experts because they don’t like what they hear. The volume of propaganda for everything is huge, it’s hard for anyone to not be influenced.

I mean these people genuinely believe Australia has set up covid concentration camps. As Australian citizen I can confirm that it is the truth. they made me work from home with my family... anyway. been following it for last two months and since the invasion began, non stop. It is scary how accurate proper predictions were on how it will turn out. I think even Ukrainian government didnt fully buy full invasion. What is interesting in whole thing, is that Ukraine would never join NATO if Russia worked with west nicely and just said no. There would always be veto, more recently Hungary. but now There are talks of Sweden and Finland joining. And i think all nato members would love them more in NATO than Ukraine. so Russia failed at that part.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60522745Oh look. All that stuff about kicking Putin's backside like in the Crimea was empty bluster. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we're not kicking off WW3 but for Christ's sake why do all of our government ministers have to behave like gobby teenagers?

If you removed the smattering of hair and painted his head brown then Ben Wallace would resemble a Cadbury's Creme Egg. No doubt with the same gooey insides too as opposed to a functional brain

A lot don’t questioning authority, they question the opinions they hope aren’t right. They blindly follow Boris and Trump who have the authority but don’t listen to actual experts because they don’t like what they hear. The volume of propaganda for everything is huge, it’s hard for anyone to not be influenced. Maybe often, but there's also been this general distrust in authority and experts that's been growing over several decades. Even well before brexit and trump, public trust in scientists and journalists was at a massive low. There are many factors that led to that, largely the way science was reported in the media, but it's one of those baby+bathwater situations. Some journalists over-emphasized aspects of scientific results to make more eye catching headlines, and then those headlines later turned out to not be correct. So people decided that all scientists and journalists were lying. Some journalists pointed out when some studies or research was funded by particular companies, so people decided that all research was biased and could be assumed to be lies. It's not even always about what they hope isn't true anymore, it's kinda a default response. Tell them to wear a mask and they'll fight tooth and nail not to wear one. Like little kids. I taught my kids to be inquisitive and ask questions, rather than the usual japanese thing of just accepting and obeying authority at all times. Now any time I try to get them to do anything they resist and claim that that's what I told them to do. They'll argue for 2 hours about why expecting them to go to bed on time is unfair and how I'm the one who taught them not to just accept it. The difference is that they're kids, most of the people we're talking about are ostensibly adults.

I had to do a double take when the Taliban said they both need to resolve the crisis through peaceful means.

...so people decided that all research was biased and could be assumed to be lies. Except when they've done their own research and declared it as the real truth.

They're just handing out machine guns to civilians in Kyiv at the minute. Not sure how I'd feel about going up against squadrons of trained soldiers.

One thing that hasn't been discussed yet is the inevitable refugee crisis that will occur. I'm super intrigued to see the responses countries will have to welcoming these refugees.

It's a bit desperate yes, but these guys have extremely high motivation in comparison to the Russians. This could prove a lot harder than Putin initially thought.

Well no men can leave the country now so, fuck that. Let that be a lesson, when embassies order their staff out of any country you are living it is probably time to leave too.

Interesting that they're failing to capture other cities and are now pivoting all their resources into taking the capital. I'm sure it's inevitable but it does seem there's a glimmer of hope.
