It does seem like their investments in Brexit and Trump have paid off. Though it is funny to see people like Farage wriggling around trying to find ways to avoid criticizing him.
Lots of comment threads around the net do seem to be filled with 'its all nato/biden/ukraine's fault and putin is just stopping genocide/stopping nazis/defendig himself against big scary ukraine' comments though. I guess it's a way to spot the people who've bought so hard into the alt-right mindset that they're unable to let go.
Luckily Mogg was able to move his 50M quid out of russian banks just before all this kicked off. Phew.

I don’t really know what he intends here, take Kyiv and install a puppet government which 40 million people will resist from now on? I expected annexation of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and probably at least a corridor to Crimea. That might still be the end goal and those areas would be relatively easy to hold indefinitely. But yeah, this seems like more. It's hard to see them going for a permanent occupation with the immense costs and headaches that would involve. The stated goal of "demilitarising" Ukraine might actually be a clue (basically fuck the country over as badly as they can). They literally have troll farms employing thousands of people to spam that crap as far and wide as possible, and a significant portion of the 145 million Russian people are brainwashed into useful idiots by their media. They can fill comment threads with whatever they want. Some of it is our idiots as well I'm sure, but that shit should be treated like psyops propaganda and nothing else.

Christ, I hate this bloke. I have no doubt that he'll be in the running for Republican candidacy at some point.

Yeah, he's a genuinely odious (and dangerous) one. What I'd read previously was that, though it's been long expected he'll have a crack at the GOP candidacy, he may be waiting to see what Trump/Ivanka do in terms of 2024.
It's both scary and remarkable just how substantial Fox's reach is in the US.

I 'enjoyed' the business-as-usual meeting Putin had with Imran Khan yesterday. Apparently it was a "great time" to visit.

They've ended up in a position where they can't row back from the true faith, because it means admitting that they were wrong.

Previously Pakistan would have been keen to be seen as an American ally. After 40 years things have flipped the other way. Meanwhile India sits on it's arse asking everyone to sit down and talk.

The US could really do with reinstalling the Fairness Doctrine in regards to media coverage. A bit like the BBCs always show both sides thing. Still the whole freedom of speech thing is so ingrained it will be impossible to totally remove the stupid. The whole 'I might not agree with what you are saying but I'll defend your right to say it' is possibly one of the dumbest sayings around, yet once said they just assume they have won the argument. Fucking morons.

Tbf that expression always seems to come out of the mouth of a libertarian who sees themselves as a liberal.

I think it was successfully instilled in a generation that 'always question authority and think for yourself' was a great thing.
The problem is that it has resulted in a whole mass of people who just automatically disbelieve anything from an authoritative source, and lap up anything that seems counter to that.
But it becomes very hard to fight against, because then you're just accused of believing everything that the authorities tell you, and as we know there is no middle ground or nuance on the internet.
As someone who grew up listening to punk / rock bands and authors who espoused thinking for yourself and questioning authority, I can't help but thinking that this isn't what they had in mind. And I find myself in the unexpected position of arguing that they probably should often listen to authoritative sources rather than just disbelieving everything they say on reflex.

It's not really helped by the US and the UK having recent or current governments that lie more often than they tell the truth. Not believing them is perfectly rational, the problem comes when you decide some random idiot off the internet is telling you the truth.

I think the bigger problem many in the US face is not being able to recognise a complete cunt when it's staring them in the face.

Yeah but it's a very short slippery slope to not believing them even when it's blatantly obvious that they *are* telling the truth. And not believing journalists. And not believing scientists. Etc.. It's fair enough to be aware that media outlets and pharmaceutical companies have their own biases and motivations, but that's not the same thing as automatically assuming every single thing they say or do is a 100% lie. And automatically believing any random person on the internet who says that it's a lie and that they know the truth.

Hoping that as a scientist I'll be whisked away to some ultra-secure weapons research facility rather than being conscripted into an urban warfare situation.

I can tell you haven't lived in the UK for a while. It's been years of Boris telling blatant, verifiable lies day after day after day. It's a rare occasion when he does say something that's genuinely true rather than sort of true if you ignore a few inconvenient facts. It's a long way from not believing him to not believing scientists. As for journalists, well look at the Daily Mail or GB News.

To be fair, there ARE examples of guerilla forces repelling a much larger and equipped enemy (Afghanistan, Vietnam) and they'll need that hope.
But the Ukrainians will need support and arms / training
