FFS, how utterly tragic it is in Afghanistan, I know it's complicated, blah blah but surely the world could have done better than hand the country over to these neanderthal maniacs?

Instead we wasted 20 years of money and people to get back to exactly the same position. Pathetic.

Making it worse China and Russia recognising the Taliban as legitimate government (as China has mining interests in the country) No doubt the ccp cunts are giving the taliban a huge amount of money as well to be left alone

I'm surprised they commited to withdrawing so doggedly. I feel like the US/UK have a moral obligation now to not let the Taliban take over. As soon as they saw that the Taliban were going to take over with ease they should have done an about face. I'm guessing they're sticking with it because they think withdrawal is popular but surely a better line would have been "look, our predecessors really fucked this up, we don't want to stay but we have to".

The US are just cutting their losses and running. Any other westerner has to follow. Like I said in the UK thread, I think they knew it was going to go wrong, they probably just anticipated months not days for it to happen.

Oh shit, I wouldn’t be surprised. Lots of photos of people clinging on and climbing over planes attempting to leave. I think the airport even suspended flights it was so crowded.
Really fearing the worst if the US decides it needs to deploy crowd control to take back the runways.

This thread from the DAB Governor, quoted by Simon Marks is pretty insane:

Imran Khan also continues to show how much of an absolute cunt he is going on about how the Taliban have broken the mental chains of slavery of Afghanistan. Get ready the cycle of terrorism to begin anew. Covid, climate change, terrorism I think that's end of civilization bingo.

It doesn't all solely fall at the feet of Biden (and the Fox News/MAGA crowd's attempts to literally erase the history of Trump setting the wheels in motion are disgusting as ever) but oh boy is it a stain on the current administration, and their reaction to the events have so far been rightly condemned.
The only current positive is how little violence there's been from the Taliban (so far) given the astonishing speed they swept in. It's not good by any measure but at least there aren't thousands dead on the streets as of right now, like many were expecting.

I honestly don't see how there was any other option than this. All that was happening was it was delayed as the US half heartedly threw lives at it. Eventually this was inevitable.
If you invade and destroy a country you oy have two options. Leave it fucked or help then to set up a new one. If you do the latter (see Japan and Germany) you can do long term good, but it requires shit loads of money, investment, boots on the ground and time.
All that the west has done is spin plates making a token effort. This was always going to happen and the longer we stayed feebly the more the underground of resentment would just simmer.

Yeah its probably not in their interests to start fighting while there are still thousands of Americans in Kabul. Once the Western forces have gone the terror will probably begin

Sad to say you are probably right, simple. These spokespeople they keep wheeling out for the western media are just playing the game and telling us what we want to hear. The West has economic aid as a bargaining chip but I doubt it will stop the Taliban doing as they wish.

Sounds like Biden is blaming the Afghans for not repaying US investment with stability or resistance to the Taliban

I mean there is some truth to the fact that the Afghan government were essentially toothless but I don't know it doesn't sit right to me passing the buck like that. You go in there, you take responsibility.

You go in there, you take responsibility. It was a lose/lose situation regardless. Too much corruption on both sides and general anti-US sentiment throughout the country had lead to the leadership there basically rinsing the US for whatever they could get. The options were basically permanent occupation and constant resource drain, or cut your losses and get out of there. I do actually think the latter option was getting close to the only option (I hesitate to say "best"), but the way it's been handled is just absolutely horrific. Multiple people are responsible for this, including both Trump and Biden, so now we get to enjoy weaponization of the blame game until the next election cycle.

Yeah, I don't think anyone kids themselves that there was any easy solution, but it's remarkable that it's came down to this. After twenty years, we're leaving the place a more febrile melting-pot than ever before, which is almost certainly going to become a veritable epicentre of terrorist activity in the years ahead. Dark times.

It was an astonishingly swift take over by the Talibans Well, the government did fold pretty fucking quickly. It's probably why the evacuation felt so rushed. Anyway yeah, I dunno. This isn't really the right thing to do, but I don't think there's any right thing to do. Except go back in time 10 or 20 years and not fail quite so hard at the nation building.
