It’s not exactly up to Johnson whether Russia gets kicked off swift though is it? UK and US are pushing for it apparently. Few other countries are concerned it'll have on impact on their own economies.

Economies are going to take a hit no matter what. It's the right thing to do though.

Joe Biden says cutting Russia off from the global Swift banking system is not being proposed "right now".
He says the sanctions already proposed on all the banks are of equal consequence and perhaps even exceed banning Russia from Swift.
"Let's have a conversation in another month or so to see if they're working," he says.

You’ve only got to hold out another month, Ukraine, before we reassess the situation. You’ve got this.

As much as I like Eastern block bitchyness at EV the right thing to do is ban them. Where can I put a tenner on Ukraine winning EV?

Ooh I don't know, other than Belarus I doubt anyone will give them points now
Uefa are moving the final from Russia who are currently at war, that's very different.

Bet Russia still get more points than the UK. They literally did in 2014 when they annexed crimea and everyone booed them.

I think we're a long way from a nuclear war. Putin is not a madman, he's an aging dictator trying to shore up a disparate country with a declining population and a one-note economy.

We are a long way away bit that changes the second he looks towards a NATO country.
There is always the risk that he is losing the plot as he is getting on a bit.

I'm not so sure. He's clearly not *stupid*, but I'm not convinced he doesn't at least half believe his own historical revisionism and the Russian victim complex he's been stoking, and he seems to see the west as a personal threat. He was really upset about things like the Arab Spring, Gaddafi and Syria. He's also getting really old and old people have a tendency to go nuts.

There is always the possibility that he's losing the plot, but he's not an absolute monarch, he's in the pockets of oligarchs and they probably don't want to be involved in a nuclear exchange. I think he'll stay away from NATO countries. There may be some sabre-rattling, but does Putin want a third world war, or just give the impression that he does as per Russia's non-linear warfare strategy? He's been very deliberate about his foreign wars thus far. What's more likely is that he tries underhand means to influence/coerce NATO border countries to leave the alliance.

Possibly, but there's a long history of people like Putin playing the part of a histrionic madman to intimidate enemies at home and abroad. It's been part of North Korea's playbook for decades. His theatrical belicosiity plays well to his supporters too. He's managed to stay in power and conduct a number of fairly successful military exercises over decades; he's not known for acting capriciously. Although I do accept that senility may come into play.

This invasion is still pretty scary though, and doesn't bode well for geopolitics over coming decades.

I don’t really know what he intends here, take Kyiv and install a puppet government which 40 million people will resist from now on?

Surely the plan is to make it part of Russia and thus subject to all the bullshit the Russians have to put up with already.

Russia have spent so much time and effort keeping the West on it's toes that I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he withdrew all of his troops tomorrow and said 'nothing to see here folks'. Imagine how much of a headfuck that would be.
I don't think that will happen, but it would be a great non-linear play.
