We need fewer angry old men in charge of countries. ...That would go to prison if they didn't have the security of their position to shield them and therefore cling to said position tooth and nail, let's not forget It really does feel like the only hope left is if the Israeli people have a Mitchell & Webb moment and force Netanyahu out but apparently he’s actually stronger than ever.

The Private Eye cover from last year was surprisingly prescient.

I'm not sure UK/IRA is a very good analogy. It's not like there was a constant and indiscriminate stream of rockets being fired from Ireland into the UK that the Irish government didn't do anything about...

It never ceases to amaze me how much reporters are willing to stand out of cover and do pieces to camera in the midst of a shit ton of small arms fire.

Wasn’t Jeremy Bowen shot or hit by shell shrapnel doing it in the 90s and was straight back out in the field once his guts had been reinserted?
Its absolutely mad that we’re somehow at the point where starting WW3 is an acceptable dead cat bounce for a politician’s support starting to waiver.

Made me laugh that the headlines were highlighting his HIGNFY role. That's unlikely to have put a target on his back. PE on the other hand...

Though has anyone actually confirmed it was a gunshot? As the original Guardian article that broke it was quite circumspect with "suspected" and lots of quote marks around things. E.g. have the Police said yes.
As you'd think a bullet wouldn't just damage a taxi window but shatter it...

As you'd think a bullet wouldn't just damage a taxi window but shatter it... Far too many possible variables to know that. Laminated glass doesn't shatter in the usual way, generally.

Good old Grauniad
"This article was amended on 2 October 2024. An earlier version said that Private Eye was a weekly magazine when it is published fortnightly."

The met now saying it was likely a mechanical failure, not a gunshot, that caused it.

Lols. It did sound a bit far fetched.

Years ago I fooled around with trying to fix my rear defroster with some conductive paint and the whole window exploded 5 minutes into my next journey. Absolutely terrifying when it happened, could easily think it was someone shooting at me if I was anyone important.

Does make more sense that a cab driver got a bit over excited, rather than someone firing a gun on Dean Street and nobody noticing except the cab driver... Dean Street is a fucking busy street.

Did make me wonder how much stuff Ian Hislop knows about, but cannot get away with publishing, to the point that someone would want to take him out.

Maybe angus deayton has a grudge? If Angus hadn’t been caught having a bit too much fun we’d never have had the guest presenters and none of this would’ve ever happened.

Or Angus Deayton would have become PM and caused brexit instead.

Or Angus Deayton would have become PM and caused brexit instead. With Mariella Frostrup as Deputy PM, which would be a bit weird as she's Anglo-Norwegian.
A reference for Coupling fans.

Hislop said the policeman talking to him said “This may be a pointless question, but can you think of anyone who may bear a grudge?” 😆
