www.eurogamer.net/concord-was-in-development-for-roughly-eight-years-firewalk-dev-confirmsI've just noticed that the forum has barely spoken about, if at all, about this game that is out tomorrow and has absolutely no buzz about it. I played it in the beta with a code a friend gave me and it had to be one of the most derivative things I'd played in a long time. It looks nice and handles well but there was nothing where I thought I'd come back to this again. I also can't believe it's a paid for boxed product. It almost feels it's been sent out to die. Thoughts?

I thought the trailer that they showed a few weeks back was quite fun. Then I realised what kind of game it was and promptly tuned out. Boring.

8 years in dev kinda makes sense when you realise that Overwatch 1 came out in 2016. Dunno why it's taken them 8 years to make this kind of game, pandemic maybe, reworks, but you have to feel they missed their shot already. The genres already kind of set, Overwatch, Apex Legends, Valorant all kind of occupy that space for the 3 best games within the genre with Marvel Rivals as the big thing people are excited for. I know I only have space for one competitive multiplayer shooter in my heart and it's Overwatch.
I tried the beta and realised it was more Destiny pvp than Overwatch which turned me off it. Didn't really seem to do too much different and I didn't really click with any of the Guardians of the Galaxy knock off characters. The biggest grip with the game is that it doesn't backfill if any players leave or rage quit. So if that happens then gg I guess because the player advantage is too strong to overcome.
I know the player count was low even for a free beta and here they are charging money for it. Does seem like Sony were hoping it would come good, it's one of the episodes in this new anthology series announced at Gamescom, but it just seems too late. Feels bad talking about it in that way, but it has a lot to fight for to stay relevant.

I believe this was one of the games when Sony was in its GaaS push. As always, especially in video game development, never chase trends.

I’d never even heard of it til now.
A live-service multilayer shooter, though? Gosh.
The most surprising thing is that you actually have to pay for it.

You'd like to think that with Suicide Squad, TLOU Factions and other live service games that have come and gone, plus a change in CEO, that they can shift gears away from these kinda of games. But then something like Helldivers 2 happens and it's a huge success for them. You can see why they want to do it they can continually make money off 1 of these games than multiple single player only games ever could. But still, can't have studios working so long on a game like this that will come out to a middling reception.

I think Helldivers is a different concept. While it is a GaaS it's PvE, it can be played solo, it's a sequel and it really wasn't made in response to something else.

Not my bag, so it wasn't on my radar at all; even so, I'm shocked to realise that it's due out tomorrow.
There seems to be zero buzz around the game, both at Font Geek and elsewhere.

By comparison even that awful Kong game fron last year had a higher player peak than this has on launch. I do feel for the devs, supposedly took 8 years to make (coincidentally when Overwatch 1 was released) and this is the result. Mind you, the game is functionally fine, maybe even great to people who want that competitive multiplayer shooter aspect. But clearly it's just bombed for a bunch of reasons. Poor marketing, the fact it's £40 when it's competitors are free to play, general fatigue of the genre.

More people played that Gollum game as well, plus Sony purchased the studio before their 1st game was launched. No wonder jim ryan "retired"
PvP games are not my thing but from what I've seen Marvels rivals is better hero shooter and its "free"

You've Overwatch, Apex Legends and Valorant that are essentially the big three leaders in the space in hero shooters plus the existence of Marvel Rivals and Deadlock coming out that despite being the same genre are driving much more anticipation and excitement. Had it come out sooner, who knows. But it is a bummer for those devs who spent all that time putting time and effort into making what's otherwise a decent game just being met with the biggest indifference or outright rejection I've seen in a long time. Not even a 1000 players for a first party Sony title.

People have had enough of live service games and the market is already saturated. The sooner publishers realise this the better really. Unless you are massively innovating the market, people just don't want another season pass to grind every 2 months. Especially when they are full of bloated useless shite..

At least we can console ourselves with the fact that Sony got into the live service market before the bubble burst, and didn't wait until everyone was sick and tired of... oh.
If nothing else, history suggests that the PlayStation suits will own up to their failures on this front, instead of hanging the devs out to dry and shutting the studio that made... ah.

Ooof. That's rough. Feel really sorry for the developers. 8 years of work and you launch to less than a thousand players on Steam. Ouch. Gunna be a bunch of layoffs in the coming weeks.

A lot of them probably do know it by now to be fair, it's just they don't wanna do what Sega did with Hyenas. Though there's probably a bunch that got binned behind the scenes.
The question is how many are stupid enough to keep trying. You can kind of understand them keeping trying in the PvE sort of space, provided your game isn't getting zero interest right off the bat, but the PvP space is basically a complete dice roll

I just want sexy robot girlfriends at this point in my life. Why do they keep trying to release hero shooters?

Wonder what they'll do next. Its a paid for game so they can't just shutter it without refunds. I feel its too soon from release to go F2P and 'reward' early adopters as they will surely want refunds instead. Maybe they ride this wave until the release of the tv show and use it as a glorified 'advert' then go F2P on the back of it hoping it'll draw in a crowd for a look see. I reckon enough time will have passed by then that they could get away with 'rewards' instead of refunds.

Secret Level is out in Dec I think? By then I can see the game dropped in price which might make it appealing to those that liked the episode. Assuming the episode is even good enough, the CG trailer to debut it wasn't and the in game cutscenes that they promise to upload new ones weekly in game haven't exactly been engaging either.

Should have launched as a ps plus game if there were insisting on a paid model to at least get some numbers on day 1. At least you stand a chance through word of mouth if it's decent that way.

Was on the train home from work and saw a trailer for Concord, so at least Sony are promoting it (here). It looked fine, but also pretty indistinguishable from numerous other games.

I think they've marketed it enough but it's a bit like the game last summer, Immortals of Aveum ;absolutely mid tier. They both look nice and are well made but again both are uninspiring. Worse for Concord as it's purely MP. I feel the cheaper entry price was Sony not wanting to say the quiet part loud on their expectations and feelings towards its success. In all honesty in this current time it should have been released 5 years ago and should be free.
I have read all bullshit from people how it failed because...eurgh...the characters are diversity based and woke and unsent (I'm still trying to get my head around people who base their purchases on how fucksble the character are).
