I was trying to explain the sailing to my family and they were very Back when I went sailing it was cool to stand on the side of the boat, leaning out horizontally. But these guys have horizontal boards to stand on the side of! Showoffs! (though they do also seem to have safety lines. wusses!)

It's absolutely not an Olympic sport, but Tommy is killing the golf course right now.

Don't know what's wrong with me today. Proper emotional. I think (for me) it's having something to be proud of about the place instead of the other shit going on. Yeah same. Either that or it’s just really dusty everywhere just now. Not sure why I’m so much more invested this time around but I’m loving it.

There's an additional layer to the boxing. The IBA banned both boxers following unspecified tests, both were banned on the grounds of having a competitive advantage. The IOC has stripped the IBA of it status as the World governing body for boxing. The IOC has arranged the boxing itself, which means IOC rules apply. Now the IOC is not keen on making important decisions, so it passed the qualification responsibility to the national bodies, side-stepping the problem for a while. But the boxers are subject to IOC gender rules which is basically, if your passport says woman, you're a woman. And so now the problem lands back in their lap, and something that could have been sorted out quietly ages ago, is now a massive global story that does no one any good. Yeah I've seen some fucking hot takes on it JK Rowling obviously had a very measured take on it /s

But the boxers are subject to IOC gender rules which is basically, if your passport says woman, you're a woman. And so now the problem lands back in their lap, and something that could have been sorted out quietly ages ago, is now a massive global story that does no one any good. Yeah this is basically it. A failure of clear regulation that has created suspicion and benefits no one. I'd add that there is some mitigation for the IOC as the IBA was Russian led so the lack of clarity around prior IBA decisions partly stem from this and was impacted by the war. It seems unclear whether the supposed IBA failed test was for elevated testosterone or a chromosome test. It's also fair to say that the IBA had a history of opaque decision making and not following due process. So on balance you'd have to say there should be a presumption of innocence for these boxers despite those failed tests. The bigger issue for me is the IOC accepting gender solely on passport status. This relies on submissions in good faith and that the country issuing the passport has robust procedures. The history of Olympic sports suggests that relying on 'good faith' is naive, especially from a governing body. Though how you do such tests whilst maintaining athlete dignity is very difficult. Any 'necessary' scientific gender tests should have been conducted quietly and months beforehand. Maybe needs to be something that is undertaken every athlete in all sports for fairness and to normalise it rather than it become a reactive witch hunt. The primary benefits of elevated testosterone are training related and the clearance times are well known, so these have to be dealt with by out of competition tests anyway. If the accused boxers have been randomly and periodically tested and repeatedly passed (as seems likely) then all is above board. Lastly the Italian Carini apologised to Khelif and said she doesn't have anything against her. Hopefully that helps calm it down a bit too.

Surely, by JK Rowling's definition, she's a woman? She can't have it both ways.

Precisely this.
TERFs tend to be more obsessed with genitalia than your average pubescent teen, and (as I understand it) Khelif fits their definition of "a woman" in that regard.
In too much of a hurry to spew bile to do a modicum of research were we, Joanne?

Ignoring the transphobes, isn't the issue not one of genitals but that the IBA CEO publicly claimed the failed test showed XY chromosones?
The IOC don't accept the IBA tests as valid (fair enough) but unless I'm mistaken have not asked any athletes to take one themselves as their rules don't require it. So none of the athletes have scientifically proved their gender because the IOC didn't ask them too.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but from what I understand there isn't any gender test at this Olympics beyond reading someone's passport. This is why the IOC saying an "athlete passed all eligibility criteria" is unsatisfactory. Yes any athlete should know the rules beforehand and competes in full knowledge of what they are, but equally it's the Olympics. It's the biggest event in most sports so it's not like they can just go to a different major event with tighter regulations if they have concerns about whether they are at a gender disadvantage.
Can of worms obviously but if we broadly agree that sports need gender categories then you also need to decide a gold standard, independent and repeatable method of testing for compliance and the IOC simply doesn't seem to have one? It's a bit of an abdication of responsibility as a regulator.

The IOC are just shit all round tbf. It could be set up and done and then situations like all this misinformation never need to happen.

It's a weird thought now. She's born a woman, lived her life as a woman, has thr body of a woman, recognised by the Algerian government as a woman...but instead she is classified as a male because other people looked at her and thought she was one. Bizarre world of gender identity. You only are what I identify you as.

The fuss seems like divide and conquer from the far right to me sometimes. The terfs are useful fuck wits.
First go after the trans people, then the cis women who aren't womanly enough for them, then the lesbians and then over time they'll get their dream world where women can't vote any more. Obviously some questions about what extent genetic abnormality should be allowed to confer advantages, but the people making a fuss about this aren't interested in that - they're just interested in attacking specific groups.
Anyway, probably best to stop derailing the thread with it.
The trampolining is extremely anxiety inducing lol.
