Don't make me go on to talk about stroke rate. It's harder to stroke without a cox.

Another fantastic gold for Emily Craig and Imogen Grant in double sculls If anyone is in any doubt about how much the Gold means to an athlete, then just watch their medal ceremony. Superb
It’s the last time this particular classification? will feature in the Olympics apparently. So they’re forever champions

Lisa Nandy getting stuck into the Algerian boxer :/ Has she? Unless she has said something else since, she was saying that this particular case was far more complex than being presented by some people. Here is the quote: "It was an incredibly uncomfortable watch for the 46 seconds that it lasted. I know that there’s a lot of concern about women competitors, about whether we’re getting the balance right in not just boxing but other sports as well. "The decision that successive governments have made is that these are complex decisions that should be made by sporting bodies. In this case, for example, I understand that the biological facts are far more complicated than is being presented on social media and in some of the speculation. "I think as sporting bodies try to get that balance between inclusion, fairness and safety, there is a role for government to make sure that they’ve got the guidance and the framework, and the support, to make those decisions correctly and it’s something that I’ll be talking to sporting bodies about over the coming weeks and months." Just seen the trampolining win, which was great (although I have no idea why it was better than others). I think the presenter on the BBC just said she has completed the Olympics, now that she has won bronze, silver and gold. So, I assume everyone can go home now.

I always struggle with sports that are measured by judges opinions. Surely the day can’t be far away when motion tracking gathers the data and compares it to preset criteria to generate a consistent score

Am I missing something with this boxing situation - the Algerian was born with female parts and competes in a female sport as a female?
But she has naturally higher testosterone which means she’s bigger and hits harder than a lot of her opponents?
If a “solution” is needed going forward then surely its to rebalance the weight categories so that she boxes against bigger women?

He's had mixed boos and cheers. Cheers? Ugh Even Sunderland supporters stopped chanting “he shags who he wants” after Adam Johnson was sent down and everyone who likes football is awful.

Feels like everyone's jumped the gun and thinks she was born male, hence all the outrage from the usual bellends.

She looks young to me, but its her third Olympics and the crowd seemed to respond to her really well too with an amazing gold
Don't know what's wrong with me today. Proper emotional.

Yeah, that is the way I'm interpreting the situation (or, at least, I've not seen anything that really contradicts that she was born a woman). Reading between the lines of what Nandy is saying, she seems to be confirming that too, whilst also acknowledging that there is a conversation to be had on the topic more generally (which is mostly up to sporting bodies to sort out, with government guidance). Her statement to me seems to be the complete opposite of what someone that wants to flame culture wars would be saying.

That end to the trampolining (which I've never watched before, is it new?) was very sudden and dramatic. It was weird to see half the competitors in tears because they were happy, half because they were sad, and half just grinning like mad because they were happy to be there. Seems that way to me. I mean, you wouldn't have put a heavyweight like Tyson in the ring with a flyweight, and you wouldn't have banned Tyson just because he was genetically predisposed to being built like a tank and hitting hard.
Looking at a lot of the female 100m sprinters, they're all really muscular. If you compared them to the female sprinters of the 60s it'd be night and day difference. It's partly just how fitness and coaching has developed.

There's an additional layer to the boxing.
The IBA banned both boxers following unspecified tests, both were banned on the grounds of having a competitive advantage. The IOC has stripped the IBA of it status as the World governing body for boxing. The IOC has arranged the boxing itself, which means IOC rules apply. Now the IOC is not keen on making important decisions, so it passed the qualification responsibility to the national bodies, side-stepping the problem for a while. But the boxers are subject to IOC gender rules which is basically, if your passport says woman, you're a woman. And so now the problem lands back in their lap, and something that could have been sorted out quietly ages ago, is now a massive global story that does no one any good.
