I even got it setup so that I could use Wiimotes on a PC (as well as pick up the exact DVD drive model that let you copy Wii games - not sure why I didn't just buy a Wii) Cos you're a proper PC gamer.
I did buy a Wii.
And then modded it and mainly played n64 games on it...

It's getting a bit Sonic the Hedgehog in here with people telling each other the Mario game entries they like are shit and don't count for some reason And I'd do it again!

Shh... Don't summon the Sonic fans!
If everyone doesn't mind, I'm going to mention Astro Bot. Just received my copy this afternoon and played the first world. Very much is more of the same from Playroom, but on a bigger scale. Construction site level has probably been my favourite in the first world, with the environment constantly changing. Also really liked the water areas in the first level, which is rare for a platformer, but it was just a lovely environment.
It's all very charming and a lot of fun. Nothing mind-blowing or original, but you can't help but smile while playing.

Isn't that a great recommendation though. It doesn't have to be wholly original and so what if it copies Mario as long as you're smiling while playing isn't that enough?

I read a quote from the director about wanting to have Astro feel like playing with a toy, and I think they nailed that. With the precise control and the controller feedback, hearing and feeling every footstep and more, itās just such a tactile feeling to move him around the world.
The fact that they litter the world with apples, acorns, cake sprinkles, gems, bolts, etc., etc., and it never gets tiring just punching them away because of the precise feedback. There are layers of texture that just arenāt present in any other games other than these ones. Itās fun to just move him through the spaces.

No problem with challenge levels being there if people want them, but I hate the fact that game content is locked behind them. You can have these 250 bots, but if you want the rest you have to play this totally different style game.

I canāt comment on Galaxy, as Iāve never played them. I do have the first one on the 3D collection, which I have had intention to play, but the motion controls have always put me off. I suppose thatās why I never played them on the Wii.. other than Twilight, I didnāt really play many big releases on the Wii. It was a GC machine. While you do use the pointer for a couple things, the only real motion control thing (besides one or two optional levels) is the spin... It's ubiquitous, since it's a jump extender, object interaction and attack all at once, but it's just a shake, not any different from pressing the A button a second time to double jump, for example. You'd get used to it pretty quickly. And I'm pretty sure the Switch version mapped the spin to a button anyway, so it's pretty much just that couple of side levels and controlling the pointer now.

None of us got very far in Galaxy 1. It all just seemed a bit dull. Maybe it gets more interesting later. I'd recommend you give it another shot and persevere. Admittedly the gameplay never gets very complex and the early levels, although still very enjoyable and beautiful, might be a bit cookie cutter and simple, but even as early as the second dome they really start to amaze. Gusty Garden, Battlerock, Space Junk, Ghostly, Buoy Base, Deep Dark... Too many to name, honestly. Top notch atmosphere and of course the soundtrack stays phenomenal throughout. Then again, it did have the Spring powerup. The one decently major misstep of the game IMO.

Yeah, it all looked very pretty, and the tiny worlds gimmick was cool for a short while, but there was actually almost nothing interesting to do on any of them. Maybe that comes later.

Could have done more of those themed levels.
I'd pay a decent wedge for some DLC based around those levels.

I had a moan about it in the completed games thread but I find it bizarre they spent energy creating 20+ bad challenge levels instead of making more of the absolutely brilliant themed levels that really encapsulate what it's all about. Loved all of them, but that one was particularly good I thought. Wish they'd done more.

I have 260 odd bots - still mopping up but are there other levels?

Those, and one big one at the end, and some other crap ones like the crumble levels. Should have binned them all and spent that energy on a Patapon level, I say.

I can get why they aren't universally popular but for some players they will be the best bit - I loved them personally. The game is the cakewalk without them - some of the 'main' stages I found myself slightly disengaged as there wasn't much in the way of peril. Plus, the genre demands they be there - as that's what Mario does.

Played some of the second world now and take back my previous comment about lack of originality. The mouse level and the tree level are really great.

Especially when itās unique collectibles; if itās just another coin or star, itās perhaps not so bad, but someone could miss out on their favourite character.

Is that ācontentā though? Sounds like just a collectible. Itās not like thereās more game locked away at the end of the challenge levels is it?
You can argue that you suffer with OCD from not being able to get all the shiny things, but not that content is locked away I reckon.

There are bots locked on every level and they're levels, but the only content you can't access for not completing them is just the last and hardest one of them.
They aren't all that difficult though, just a bit more frustrating as you need to complete them in one run, but they're barely 30 seconds long once you get the timing right.

Yeah, I just see challenge maps as additional content, if you want to break your controller. I never managed to finish that Sackboy Adventure Ripsnorter.. I got fairly close, but in the end I just couldn't be arsed to roll back 15 years of bad gaming habits to GET GUD.
