OK, so I think Odyssey is over-rated too. Its an Ubisoft style platformer That's really out of order

I've only played multiplayer Wonder with 4(?) people while drunk. It was annoying and I kept dying, therefore it obviously sucks.

I've gone and ordered. I hope you are all happy now! See, I didn't enjoy Mario Wonder. I actually haven't finished it, despite being a big Mario fan. There was something lacking for Wonder, that I didn't feel as much playing recent Mario titles, like Odyssey and 3D World. I liked Wonder. I liked it a lot. I would say it was quite overrated though. There were a lot of ideas thrown out during the game and many of them were excellent. I would end a level wanting more, which is often a good thing, but I often wanted more because I felt like they hadn't really gone particularly far with each of the new mechanics. Then it was off doing something else and throwing out whatever interesting ideas it just had. It felt like it was just a hyperactive puppy that kept getting distracted by something else. Plus, it was a very easy game. There was very little challenge outside of the last couple of extra levels. That's what I like about Wonder- the NSMB games are solid, even great, but they're not very exciting. Wonder seems to have been a response to this- it feels new, has its own identity and is just so charming in every aspect (even the world map has personality again- for the first time since World). It's a 2D Mario with the care and attention they seem to reserve for only the 3D ones these days
Every standard stage has a wonder seed that will completely flip it on its head. It's brief but you never know what to expect. What impresses me most about it is that not once have I ever died because of the sudden transition and it's always immediately apparent what the game wants you to do. They're like small stages in stages but it still flows perfectly
It's not difficult at all (although the special stages look a bit lairy) but it doesn't have to be to be fun (and they are essentially kids games). The only difficult Mario games are 1 and 3 in my opinion anyway. If you want difficult, try the Retro Donkey Kong games

I think the question is, if Mario was available on PS, would anyone really care about Astro Bot. And if Astro Bot was on a Nintendo console, would anyone care about it there Comments like 'This made me fall in love with gaming again' is pretty much what you hear whenever a new 3D Mario is released. And 'Hopefully Sony get the message that games like this sell', etc- Nintendo have been making them all along, they do sell and Sony/MS can't or don't want to replicate it Not sure if I'd play this even if I get a PS. I have no affinity for Playstation or any of its characters so don't care about it and it would probably detract from my enjoyment overall (I'd rather a game was its own thing) Probably not, but it's a big deal for a console to have a first party 3D platformer in this day and age, plus its good. It's probably the best one out of Croc, Spyro, Crash etc.

I've got a real fondness for PlayStation, when the PS1 was first released those were my formative years in gaming, I'd been playing them for years prior but I think the first PlayStation was where I realised I absolutely loved it as a hobby.
Astro Bot is a really good game, even without the referential treatment it showers on the PlayStation brand but all the Easter eggs and levels designed around classic PlayStation titles makes it a pretty much perfect game to me.
Totally understand why it might leave some cold though.

I don't really care about the Easter eggs but I still think it's a great game.
I do enjoy the themed level based on a character that appear though.

None of us got very far in Galaxy 1. It all just seemed a bit dull. Maybe it gets more interesting later.

I can’t comment on Galaxy, as I’ve never played them. I do have the first one on the 3D collection, which I have had intention to play, but the motion controls have always put me off. I suppose that’s why I never played them on the Wii.. other than Twilight, I didn’t really play many big releases on the Wii. It was a GC machine.

Galaxy 2 Galaxy 1 3D World Odyssey 3D Land 64 Sunshine Umm, I quite liked Sunshine. I played it through to the end, unlike Galaxy which I am sure I have as well.

I love Galaxy and I think Galaxy 2 is even better, but then I love most of the 3D Mario games. I also don't get the hate for Sunshine - those levels where you lose FLUDD are as pure as platforming gets.
Mario World is still (and probably always will be) my favourite Mario game, though. It's almost perfect.

I'm not dissing Galaxy, as I don't think any of us played more than a couple of hours, so it's not really enough to be sure. Though the fact that all of us finished Mario64 on the Wii last year, and none of us got far with Galaxy seems a bit suspicious.
Maybe we just weren't in the mood. Or were Mario'd out.

Sunshine has some really annoying aspects to level design, where you can get thrown out, then you have to navigate back, which can take an age. Actually, fairly similar to Mario 64 in parts. I still love them both though!

FLUDD was a great mechanic but the game was let down by an awful camera.

Galaxy 2 Galaxy 1 3D World Odyssey 3D Land 64 Sunshine Umm, I quite liked Sunshine. I played it through to the end, unlike Galaxy which I am sure I have as well. 3D world and land don't belong on this list. It's apples versus oranges. On that note Land trumps World as it was designed around limitations of the system it was built for and is pretty much a perfect bitesized 3D handheld Mario making the most of what's available to it. 3D world is a very good game but is limited due to it's "NEW" series inspired design mixed with a fair bit of 3D land inspired design. It's a spin off title not a "real" one. I will forever die on this hill. 8 way control indeed. The remake brought us Fury though which is bloody brilliant

The Galaxy games are indeed the best, I don't think Odyssey is even close. Though they are rather different games so I understand the difference in opinion.

So I am quickly reminded playing this game of how much I suck at 3D platformers.

OK, so I think Odyssey is over-rated too. Its an Ubisoft style platformer, only a few very short levels with hundreds of moons thrown in as collectables to string out the experience. Best Mario Games Ever..... Super Mario World (SNES). This is peak 2d platforming perfected. Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. This is peak 3d platforming with lots of interesting and varied levels, packed full of creativity. Strangely, I was just about to dive in and ask if the people who are enjoying Astro also enjoyed Odyssey. I didn't enjoy Odyssey for the reasons you mentioned. It felt a little lazy and rushed. I'm maybe just getting a bit old to enjoy conventional platformers.

Even the worst Mario games are classics. I’ve completed Mario 64 at least 7 times over. I can’t say that of any other 3D game I've ever played.

Swear I read somewhere that it was pitched to Nintendo as a Yoshi game. You are correct. "It was first pitched to Nintendo as a prototype for a 3D platform game in which the player controlled Yoshi from Nintendo's Super Mario series, but was ultimately rejected by Nintendo, ending the relationship and prompting Argonaut to retool the game as an original property. The game's characters and mechanics were designed by Simon Keating in his first-ever video game project." See I don't post meaningless shit there is a link to my shit posting.

I've only finished 64 once and it wasn't on an N64. Never finished Sunshine. I might have got Mario 3D All Stars but it's going for over 100 quid now and doesn't even include Galaxy 2, so not paying that

It is funny that we are using the Astro Bot thread to talk about Mario.
Not really being a console person, I didn't have the original consoles for most of the Mario games. I played a lot of 64 emulated, but not sure if I actually completed. I did complete it in the All Stars bundle though. Certain I completed Galaxy 1 and 2 emulated. I even got it setup so that I could use Wiimotes on a PC (as well as pick up the exact DVD drive model that let you copy Wii games - not sure why I didn't just buy a Wii). Dipped into 1 on the All Stars version, but didn't get very far with it. I recall liking the second much more, so felt grumpy they didn't include the sequel. I also had just played through 64 and some of Sunshine, so was a bit Marioed out.
Sunshine I only played in the All Stars version. It was ok and had some fun moments. Think I got a bit lost and couldn't really be bothered to find out where to go next.
I liked Odyssey a lot. Keep meaning to go back to it at some stage. Should dig it out before the new Switch.
