They just need to use a slightly less shit speaker to take the edge off the sound quality.

Wow, it really is the Nintendo effect! The wiimote speakers had the same issues, along with generally being way too loud. Not that anyone except Nintendo bothered using them...

Whoever designed the "To the Beat" level needs hitting over the head with an accessibility controller.

Which Switch game uses the controller vibration to mimic a phone? It’s not even a speaker, but it’s highly convincing.

I find the DualSense speaker absolutely fine, and I usually can’t stand it when someone uses their mobile phone speaker to listen to music. You have to turn the volume down a bit though. Astro Bot uses it perfectly, it wouldn’t be the same game without it.

I love the tiny pulses on the controller in time with your footsteps.

So, my lack of historic PlayStation character knowledge is becoming apparent. I've rescued several bots and don't recognise them. (PS4 was my first PlayStation) I do recognise Solid Snake hiding under a box, Crash Bandicoot, and Parappa the Rapper.
But there's ninja with a sword, someone standing on top of a CRT tv with a PS1 in front of it, someone with a rabbit buddy...

TBH I barely glance at the bots as I collect them, there are loads I don't really recognise even though there's a decent chance I'll have played the games.
The themed levels however are a lot more recognisable.

The ninja and the guy on the TV are Grey Fox and Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid on PS1. If you watch Psycho Mantis for a second, the controller on his Playstation starts rumbling on it's own - a reference to a very unique encounter you have with him in the game itself

OK so I am on the 3rd world now.
While I am mostly enjoying it, I am going to say its extremely over-rated. Now don't get me wrong, an over-rated game can still be very good (which Astro Bot is), but IMO it really doesn't deserve the exceptional scores its been getting across the board.
It's a very polished and well made game, but I haven't really seen anything particularly original or that hasn't been done a million times before in other games. This seems to borrow a lot of elements from the Mario games, the way you fly in to the level is basically ripped straight out of the Mario Galaxy games.
I actually went and played Mario Galaxy 2 on my Steam Deck last night to compare them and I find the Galaxy games just much more enjoyable and full of more interesting and creative ideas. For me at least, Astro Bot doesn't even compare.
It says a lot that I would rather now continue my Mario Galaxy 2 playthrough before I finish Astro Bot.

I dunno, the fact that it's in the same sphere as the best Mario titles is exactly why it's not over-rated and the scores are deserving, imo. The way it plays up the Playstation legacy (again - obviously Playroom did this too) and riffs levels in PS characters styles/genres is really smartly done. Keep playing It absolutely cribs a shit ton from Mario though, yeah. www.polygon.com/gaming/449809/astro-bot-inspirations-influences-nintendo-platformers

I dunno, I think some of it boils down to the fact that Mario feels more like a platformer to me, whereas Astro Bot gives you these interesting environments to explore, but sometimes there isn't that much platforming to be had. It feels like a different genre of game to me sometimes. I actually found myself losing a bit of interest when playing last night, whereas the Galaxy games I am mostly smiling from start to finish. The fact the scores are 'in the same sphere as the best Mario titles' is exactly why I think it's over-rated. It doesn't deserve to be.

I agree with that. It's not as good as Mario. The levels are short and honestly not that interesting a lot of the time. Some of them remind of Little Big Planet levels. But mostly it's great. It's very satisfying to play, slick, lots of fun and charming. I think it's a 8 or 9/10. But I can see why my 7 yeah old kids adores it.

See, I didn't enjoy Mario Wonder. I actually haven't finished it, despite being a big Mario fan. There was something lacking for Wonder, that I didn't feel as much playing recent Mario titles, like Odyssey and 3D World.

Mario games haven't been as good since galaxy.
Still good games, just not hitting the heights of the galaxy games.

Odyssey is brilliant in my opinion.
Astro comes close but whilst I think the levels are all really cool and it is undoutedely a brilliant game. Mario still pips it for me. I'm still going to go back in and mop up the few missing robots and challenges levesl over the coming days.
The fact that this is even in the conversation with Mario is a huge achievement imo.
I do agree with Richyroo that (outside of the challenge levels) it rarely feels like platforming is much of a focus.

I adore Odyssey too - it's the Mario version of BOTW.
Drop you in a world stuffed with secrets and just lets you explore.

The soundtrack for Odyssey is immense. Probably an all-timer.

OK, so I think Odyssey is over-rated too. Its an Ubisoft style platformer, only a few very short levels with hundreds of moons thrown in as collectables to string out the experience.
Best Mario Games Ever.....
Super Mario World (SNES). This is peak 2d platforming perfected.
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. This is peak 3d platforming with lots of interesting and varied levels, packed full of creativity.

The soundtrack for Odyssey is immense. Probably an all-timer. Yep saw some suggestion that the music in this was up there and whilst catchy it's just not quite on that level, in fact I think overall Playroom had a stronger sense of identity in the score than this does.

I've gone and ordered. I hope you are all happy now! See, I didn't enjoy Mario Wonder. I actually haven't finished it, despite being a big Mario fan. There was something lacking for Wonder, that I didn't feel as much playing recent Mario titles, like Odyssey and 3D World. I liked Wonder. I liked it a lot. I would say it was quite overrated though. There were a lot of ideas thrown out during the game and many of them were excellent. I would end a level wanting more, which is often a good thing, but I often wanted more because I felt like they hadn't really gone particularly far with each of the new mechanics. Then it was off doing something else and throwing out whatever interesting ideas it just had. It felt like it was just a hyperactive puppy that kept getting distracted by something else. Plus, it was a very easy game. There was very little challenge outside of the last couple of extra levels.

I haven't quite finished Mario Wonder yet but I agree. It's still a top game and the best 2D Mario since the SNES era, but it felt a bit too random at times. But I guess it's that randomness sprinkled in with the core Mario elements that keeps things fresh with each new entry.
The recent EG list of best games today didn't have a single 3D Mario platformer in it, which I found quite surprising.

I think the question is, if Mario was available on PS, would anyone really care about Astro Bot. And if Astro Bot was on a Nintendo console, would anyone care about it there
Comments like 'This made me fall in love with gaming again' is pretty much what you hear whenever a new 3D Mario is released. And 'Hopefully Sony get the message that games like this sell', etc- Nintendo have been making them all along, they do sell and Sony/MS can't or don't want to replicate it
Not sure if I'd play this even if I get a PS. I have no affinity for Playstation or any of its characters so don't care about it and it would probably detract from my enjoyment overall (I'd rather a game was its own thing)

Chiming in to agree that the Galaxies are two of my all-time top, and I don't see anything toppling them soon. Gameplay, soundtrack, actually managing to pull off a decently emotional Mario plot (Rosalina's backstory, too bad they dropped it pretty much entirely in 2)...
I will say, I haven't played Odyssey (BotW completely eclipsed it in my list at the time) or Wonder, but I've seen enough gameplay of Odyssey to know that while I'd rank it pretty high (and am interested in playing it at some point) it doesn't beat them either.
On that note, GALAXY 3 WHEN FFS
