Ha, they were proper 2000s emo edgy, weren't they? Yeah! Although I'd say the character design for Lost Crown isn't fairing any better. Not entirely sure a modern take on a setting that is.. 9th century maybe?

It's very much an overdone black hairstyle at this point.

There is also just the aspect of people don't have the time to play everything and ultimately that's what any of these games are competing for, our time. I personally don't see the point anymore in buying stuff at any price for it to sit on a backlog, I'd much rather add it to my wishlist since that's free. Then when I have some time to play it, either I'm near to completing whatever game I'm playing or maybe a just fancy a little break on something new then that's when I'll pick it up.

The other twist of the knife in this is that this is Ubisoft Montpellier they're cutting, the ones behind Rayman Origins and Legends. This is one of Ubi's best and most consistent dev teams. They're also the ones behind Beyond Good and Evil 2. Like that game was ever coming out anyway I guess.

If I recall, the general consensus with Warrior Within was that it was a great game, probably as good as the first, but the presentation was laughably bad. Two Thrones was less well regarded, but think it was fine. Not played any of them in years, but I remember liking them all quite a bit, although don't think the third really brought anything to the table.
There was also a fourth one that came out after the cell-shaded one, which returned to the style of the trilogy. Ironically, they called it The Forgotten Sands.
Don't think the series has ever really been massive. Just checking sales numbers and SoT apparently did 2.4 million.
It's well known because of the historical significance and it has always reviewed well, but they certainly haven't ever been mega hits. A spin off game in a moderately successful series that hadn't had a major release for 14 years, in a completely different style to what it was known for and when the fans were all wanting a remake of their beloved entry in the franchise instead of what they got was never going to sell in the millions.

I played the trial or demo and the biggest issue was it felt like an indie title that didn’t especially stand out other than the name. It should have been pretty low budget and low risk but it sounds like it wasn’t.

That actually makes me want to play it more. Sorry.

What happened to that Rogue-like one they announced around the same time? I imagine that team is feeling nervous now assuming they still exist. Rogue Prince of Persia is currently in early access on Steam. It's being made by (some of) the Dead Cells guys. AFAIK they're not owned in any way by Ubisoft so I guess they'll be fine either way. The game itself is good - no idea how well it's selling though. Also, on the Steam point - wonder if this one would have benefited much from being on Steam also? I tend to try and avoid buying games on Epic, etc if I can help it (did buy this one mind).

I'm talking about in game usage as opposed to marketing. An ill fitting rap song picked out by a marketing team to play over a trailer, which isn't in the game, is just a bit different to using a Godsmack song that plays during a chase sequence multiple times.

As Jambo said that it was clear what they had in mind. Same back in the day. We were well in that era of being edgy. I don't see much difference.

I love Metroidvanias and Price of Persia but didn't buy it at launch because I have a ton of games to play and Ubisoft games normally have their prices slashed within a year.

And that is the real crux that Ubisoft can't seem to shake, hence the delay for AC Shadows and shifiting now to having no Season Pass model, Steam on Day One releases etc.

I'm making up for past mistakes and gone ahead and bought the Prince of Persia bundle that contains this, the new roguelite game, Sands of Time games and 2008 (actually surprised I didn't already have the Sands of Time games on Steam, but only had Forgotten Sands - which I've never played).

Shite. I always meant to pick this one up.
I actually saw this thread being bumped, went "oh yeah!", ordered it, and only then went on to read the news...
My thought process was definitely along the lines of "that will be £15-20 cheaper in a few months, and I'm in no rush"... I mean, for the record I was exactly right.
Meanwhile, after 3 years, Metroid Dread is only about £5 off what I paid at launch

Ubisoft really are in the doldrums right now, huh?
Assassin's Creed - Origins and Odyssey revitalised the formula, but Valhalla was too bloated for many. Mirage was heralded as a return to the good old days, but didn't knock anyone's socks off in the process; now Shadows has been delayed out of the lucrative Q4 period, and how it'll end up performing is anyone's guess at this point.
Splinter Cell - no new entry in the series, and not even any remasters or remakes, for over a decade. The long-awaited remake of the original game is currently MIA.
Watch Dogs - apparently dead as a series, in the wake of Legion's tepid reviews and disappointing sales.
Ghost Recon - Wildlands was Ubi doing what it always does, and forcing a hitherto-linear series into its open-world template. Breakpoint followed suit, but with the addition of half-assed loot and survival mechanics; it was a total disaster for the company, and the fallout from its calamitous launch is still being felt today.
Prince of Persia - the Sands of Time remake is still in development hell, and now the Lost Crown team seems to have been disbanded despite strong reviews for the first game.
Beyond Good and Evil - the sequel seems to be DOA, to all intents and purposes.
Far Cry - perhaps the most formulaic series from a developer that only makes formulaic games these days. If they're going to make FC7 (which I assume they are), they'll either need to shake things up considerably or deal with lower-than-expected sales from a dwindling player base.
Star Wars Outlaws - a truly colossal IP, crudely shoehorned into Ubi's standard template. It didn't do well critically or commercially.
Avatar - see above re Star Wars.
The Division - no firm news on the third game as yet. The first was a flop at launch, but turned things around; the second was apparently better, but even that was five years ago now.
Rainbow Six - still milking Siege for all it's worth. The zombie-themed spin-off they made went down like a lead balloon, derided as a lazy asset flip that didn't justify its own existence.
Immortals Fenyx Rising - sequel apparently cancelled due to low sales of the first, even though it was one of the few Ubisoft games in recent years that really struck a chord with those who played it.
I bet Ubi's shareholders are wishing the company had been bought out by Vivendi after all, as it's hard to imagine that they'd have done a worse job of steering the ship than Yves Guillemot has done in the past decade or so.

Hmmm, don't agree with all of that really. R6 Siege does really well and consistently good money and player counts. Ghost Recon Wildlands was legit a good game dodgy politics aside. The first Division wasn't a flop at launch it had a big drop-off when it came to endgame. Division 2 was a brilliant game and did really well. Although it was abandoned very early. Outlaws was reviewed well for the most part.

Its crazy that we still haven't had a splinter cell although it it had fallen into the same open world formula as the rest of their stuff maybe that's a good thing. Watch Dogs 1 was great if a little copy/paste but 2 started to get a little too goofy for my tastes. Why the fuck do I want to spend most of my time attacking with a yo-yo ffs. Anyways, this died with Legion as far as I'm concerned. Is it possible to have less than zero interest in ever playing it? I really liked breakpoint but agree that it's mechanics were half assed. They were leaning into the division gear score bollocks and setup consumables and healing like it was a sort of MMO and then undid all of it within months. Side point, the night in this game was super ass and just like a darker grey rendering NV goggles pointless. I'm wondering what kind of impact Stalker 2 has on FC7. FC was a sort of Mishmash if Crysis and stalker but with all the frictional edges shaved off. The problem I find with it is some of the edges are the healing, status effects, gear and item handling and other minutiae that add a lot to a game for me (and others if you look at the mods for S1). What you ended up with was a streamlined open world game where you run around as an apex predator but it was already old by FC4.

Fair enough
Siege still performs well, sure, but as a series Rainbow Six seems to be spinning its wheels - Siege itself came out almost a decade ago, Extraction was an abject failure, and the only other R6 games released in the past 10 years are mobile titles.
Although I enjoyed Wildlands, I did find it to be both generic and repetitive in the way Ubi's games (almost) invariably are... and yeah, the writing was dodgy as hell.
I may be wrong re The Division - I'd always seen it as a one of those games that bombed at launch but eventually turned things around with subsequent updates (which, to give credit where it's due, is one of Ubisoft's stronger suits).
On reflection, Outlaws was reviewed well enough, but it sold badly.

I can't think of a single Ubisoft franchise that's improved in the last ten years.
Edit - Division 2 was better than the original. That's about it.

For me, Watch Dogs 2 was better than the original (as was Legion), but otherwise I'd agree.

I feel like if I like something lately, it sells like shit!
Just me obviously, but I actually think The Lost Crown, AC Mirage, Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws have been the strongest yearly output from Ubisoft in years. I've thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Basically me liking something is the death knell for sales!

An open world single player Splinter Cell could be great if it was done well, sort of like MGS:V but in a city and more stealthy.

The 180 in terms of presentation and characters is horribly jarring, and as such it lacks a lot of the charm of SoT. I think I gave up about 10 minutes in when you had to do this long battle against some woman in a dominatrix outfit. wtf? But when I finally went back to it and pushed through all the shite they'd unnecessarily added, the actual gameplay is pretty good. The combat is almost certainly better, but SoT never really needed *better* combat, it just needed less of it. But the platforming and level design is really good at times. Shame about the lack of charm. The 3rd one is fine. It's basically them dialing back the shite from WW and making a game pretty similar to the first game. But it's not as good. Forgotten Sands... I didn't know about and haven't played.

The goofiness of Watchdogs 2 felt like a response to the criticisms of the first game being too dour and serious.
I didn't particularly love either of the games.
I thought Assassin's Creed Origins was a genuinely great game, but wasn't been able to really get into Odyssey Or Valhalla by enjoyed them both.
Odyssey seems better and a bit less bloated but I'm boringly interested in vikings and that period of history so ended up enjoying that more, but not enough to finish it (though now that they live updates have ended I might go back).
The truth is I've enjoyed more than a few Ubisoft games from the last decade.

According to a report in EG the team have been dispersed to other parts of the company rather than being laid off so that's something at least.

Ubisoft ended up loving the smell of their own farts!
They used to be among my favorite developers taking risks: Sands of Time, Splinter Cell, Beyond Good and Evil, Assassin's Creed (enjoyed the original and loved Ezio's story, then Black Flag), Rayman Origins/Legends were all fucking great, had fun with randoms on the Division and while Rainbow 6 and Brothers in Arms aren't my thing, they were considered to be good/great.
Nowadays, they just shove their tried (or is it tired) and tested open world formula on anything and call it a day, then complain why people are not lapping it up...
