Once made a sausage and egg muffin at home using the Takeaway Secret book.
Tasted fairly close to the real thing but it's just not the same when there's no grease everywhere or cheese stuck to the wrapper.

Also you need a special kind of chicken that lays tube-shaped eggs.

I do like the McDonald's breakfasts. Decent coffee too (though I'm a pleb who just drinks instant coffee at home so I really shouldn't appraise coffee) Haven't been there outside of breakfast time for years. Doesn't help that the McDonald's in the centre of Bristol is an absolute shithole full of youths in black puffa jackets trying to act like hard men, with more than a couple of stabbings there, so I'm inclined to avoid that place when it's busy. You've basically described every McDonald's in a large city.

I don’t like egg and I really don’t like their sausage patty so it’s basically a bacon butty for me. There’s something about them that goes well with a car journey but several local cafes obviously do better ones. The coffee is extremely consistent and drinkable. Nothing special, just a solid ‘that hits the spot’, as with the hot choccy too.
I do quite like a cheesy bacon flatbread too but the ingredients are gash - wafer thin streaky bacon and basically a Kraft cheese slice.

There’s been times when I’ve been travelling over night that a McDonald’s coffee has basically saved my life.

Greggs coffee is not up there. May as well be Bisto or mud

Sausage and egg mcmuffin is the best thing they do, take or leave the rest as pretty much everything else is done better some other place I like it, but it's annoying you can't get it with ketchup or brown sauce anymore. Double cheeseburger is top tier too.

Double-cheeseburger is my go to. They're never great, but ok.
I have never had a breakfast there ever, I'm possibly doing this wrong, so may have to try it out some time!

Struggle to find a decent chippy nowadays - we had an amazing one near us for a few years but the last couple of times we've gone the chips have been pants.
They all seem to follow the same pattern of changing ingredients/management when they get successful in order to save a few quid and subsequently the quality goes to shit and we stop going.
Get the chips right and everything else is a bonus.

The day they retire, there will probably be some kind of official day of mourning.

Yeah my local has definitely gone downhill. Getting harder to find a reliable one. Miss living where I was before where there were two decent places.

It’s always too soggy these days. Better at a gastropub I find.
Likewise with the chips. The Chinese near us has far nicer chips than all the English chippies. I don’t know what it is either, most likely what they are cooked in, but the chips from the Chinese have this wonderful buttery taste to them.

There used to be a great one off Praed Street, went there a lot growing up. So did Heston Blumenthal, he featured it in an episode where he makes his “perfect” fish n chips. Obviously the owners took the opportunity to cash in on the publicity, sold it to someone who gutted it out and seemingly got the guys who do Chicken Cottage to refit it. When they handed me a polystyrene tray of chips I handed it back and walked out

It’s about the same these days! I don't know about your chippy but we get way more portions than a gastropub. My point was that a good beer battered cod in a good food pub is usually superior as a coated fish to the soggy oil slick I get at the chippy. I actually generally feel ill after chippy fish and chips because it’s just so much stodge and so much grease. It may be that our locals are going downhill but one is I think award winning in the NW. Incidentally a big f*ck off portion of spare ribs from aforementioned Chinese chippy is absolutely my favourite fast food. No contest.

Cod and chips is still pretty good here in Brum if you know where to go. The worst chips I've ever had is in Bristol when I used to go to uni there. Curry wasn't great either.

I’m in Middleton betwixt Manchester (North), Rochdale, Oldham and every other hell hole round here (hence the name, we’re equidistant to most of GM).

I went out with a lass from Middleton in my younger years. Her gran then found out I was from Oldham and told her to dump me. Oldham folk can’t be trusted apparently.

Note that I said ‘in’ and not ‘from’ lol. I’m from somewhere worse.
Always saw Oldham as quite a good shopping centre when there was still such a thing as high street trade. The odd time I went out there drinking though it was always slightly terrifying. Maybe her nan was right!

I wonder if McDonalds breakfasts would be as good if they were available all day?
The chance of me being at a McDonalds before 10am is minimal, and if I am in town at that time then I've almost certainly already had breakfast, so I get to have one about once every 4 years. As such, it's this rare treat that seems head and shoulders above everything on their day menu.
But if it was available all day every day, would it lose its rarity value and become less tasty?
Maybe these are the kind of deep philosophical question we will never find the answer to...
